Perhaps because it was the first time Jiu Yue had let her emotions spill out so completely, Ji Yiqing received every bit of it without missing a single drop.
Ji Yiqing’s kiss turned a little wild.
It was also the first time Jiu Yue realized that there really were people who could crank sexual tension to the absolute max—a single kiss that felt as if he wanted to swallow her whole.
And it was also the first time Jiu Yue found herself unable to endure it.
No helping it.
Flustered and embarrassed, Jiu Yue lifted her foot and kicked Ji Yiqing.
Ji Yiqing slowly released Jiu Yue’s slightly swollen lips, then leaned close to her ear and let out a low chuckle.
It sent goosebumps racing all over Jiu Yue’s body, leaving her tingling and itchy all at once.
That was totally cheating!
Ji Yiqing’s large hand kneaded the back of Jiu Yue’s neck.
So kissing her until she got angry and earning a kick in return—was that considered even?
Jiu Yue, like a kitten caught by the scruff of the neck, went soft in Ji Yiqing’s arms, letting out small, muffled hums.
Just one word—bliss.
The two of them each took a moment to steady their emotions and breathing.
Jiu Yue was still fine; Ji Yiqing, full of youthful vigor, had some reactions that needed calming down.
If this hadn’t been a proper disaster-relief context, who knew—they might already have been rolling around under the open sky.
Holding Jiu Yue, Ji Yiqing finally felt a sense of his soul returning home.
These past few days, with Jiu Yue not by his side—
Although this time the disaster hadn’t caused especially severe damage, his heart had been hanging on Jiu Yue the whole while.
Jiu Yue’s martial arts were formidable, but she was still flesh and blood.
Under natural disasters, whether princes and nobles or common folk, everyone was no more than ants.
Now, seeing Jiu Yue cross mountains and rivers just to find him, Ji Yiqing felt as if his heart had been placed in the center of a hot spring—not only warm, but with gentle currents constantly flowing through it.
Jiu Yue snorted. “What are you laughing at?”
Was he laughing at her?
Laughing at how impatient she’d been?!
If he dared say yes, she’d yank his hair bald!
Ji Yiqing gently squeezed the back of Jiu Yue’s neck to soothe her. “I’m laughing because I’m happy. Being able to see you at a time like this—it’s just like a dream.”
Jiu Yue raised her hand and twisted his waist.
Ji Yiqing hissed several times from the pain, yet still refused to let her go.
“Is it a dream?” she asked.
Ji Yiqing could only grin foolishly. “No. It’s you. You came to see me.”
Jiu Yue lifted her chin and looked at him.
Ji Yiqing lowered his head and rubbed his forehead lightly against hers, taking in her smug little expression.
Then Jiu Yue said one sentence that blew Ji Yiqing apart, like he’d been dropped into a boiling pan and fried over and over again—all the moisture instantly evaporated.
“Ji Yiqing, I’ve fallen for you.”
Ji Yiqing’s arms tightened abruptly, hugging Jiu Yue as if he wanted to embed her into his very bones.
His voice floated unsteadily, trembling—and even stuttering a little.
“Y-you… what did you say?”
Jiu Yue rolled her eyes.
She poked his forehead with her finger, pushing his head away from hers, then cupped his face with both hands.
By the distant firelight, she looked straight at him.
As their eyes met beneath a sky full of stars, the noise and clamor in the distance gradually faded away.
Only this small patch of heaven and earth remained, holding just these two small figures.
In each other’s pupils, there was no one else.
“I said—Ji Yiqing, I like you.”
Jiu Yue was not the least bit shy.
If she liked someone, she’d say it.
What was the big deal?
She had no idea that in Ji Yiqing’s mind, it was as if fireworks had exploded across the sky,
blasting him so thoroughly that he couldn’t even form words.
He had hoped, waited, thought, yearned—for so long that he’d lost count of the days.
In this world, most people were merely suitable.
Mutual love was so terribly hard to come by.
Ji Yiqing’s boiling blood had nowhere to go.
His hand gripping the back of Jiu Yue’s neck tightened, and with reckless boldness, he roughly pressed her against himself.
Lowering his head, he captured her lips with overwhelming force.
“Ho—mmph—”
Jiu Yue was pinned and held, her head already spinning.
Who kissed like this, to the point of suffocation?
Her fingers slowly slid out the silver needle hidden within the weave of her clothes.
In the tiny gaps where she could breathe, the last shred of her reason calculated—could Ji Yiqing, this madman, handle the consequences of one needle?
Then she opened her mouth and bit down hard, biting straight through Ji Yiqing’s lip.
The spreading taste of blood finally jolted Ji Yiqing back to his senses.
He released her lips in a panic, glancing at Jiu Yue cautiously, wanting to look but not daring to.
Utterly aggrieved.
He’d just been too happy.
It really did feel like a dream.
Jiu Yue panted heavily, trying to put her hands on her hips but unable to while being held. “Are you trying to kiss me to death?”
Ji Yiqing pursed his lips miserably. “I… I was just too excited.”
“It was just one sentence—I like you. Was that really necessary?”
Ji Yiqing looked even more wronged.
How could it not be necessary?
Two years. From the moment they met until now—two whole years.
How hard it had been to wait for Jiu Yue to say she liked him, only he knew.
Ji Yiqing buried his face in the hollow of her neck. “I was wrong.”
Jiu Yue snorted, the two of them pressed close, holding each other.
In Ji Yiqing’s mind, Jiu Yue’s words kept looping over and over—
“I like you.”
The more he thought about it, the more he smiled.
Which earned him a laugh-scolding from Jiu Yue: “Idiot.”
Then they looked at each other and broke into matching smiles.
They gathered some firewood and sat by a tree, Ji Yiqing holding Jiu Yue.
Both of them were splattered with mud.
But at a time like this, neither cared about such things.
Ji Yiqing simply held Jiu Yue gently.
Still finding it unbelievable, he asked, “When did it happen?”
Jiu Yue herself found it a bit magical too.
“I can’t really say. Just today—at the moment you jumped into the water to save that little child.”
Ji Yiqing hummed in response.
If it were anyone else in that situation, forget anything else—a furious scolding would’ve been guaranteed.
But Jiu Yue didn’t do that.
Instead, at that very moment, she’d been moved—she’d fallen for him.
Ji Yiqing felt that Jiu Yue truly was different from everyone else.
Jiu Yue said slowly, “Actually, I really don’t understand—I don’t even know why someone would risk their life to save another person, when the two might not even know each other.”
Ji Yiqing played with her fingers.
“Realizing that I was moved by you doesn’t conflict with being angry at you for jumping into the water to save someone.”
“But I could vaguely feel that, to you, doing that was something that made you happy—something you believed was right.”
So Jiu Yue felt that even if she didn’t understand it, she wouldn’t stop Ji Yiqing from saving people.
Compared to Jiu Yue’s habit of weighing gains and losses before making choices,
Ji Yiqing’s noble character—placing life and death aside—felt especially precious.
Everyone had their own choices, their own way of living.
Jiu Yue respected that.
But she still hoped that if there were a next time, he’d take just a little more care with his own safety.
It was the first time Ji Yiqing had heard Jiu Yue speak like this.
And also the first time he realized how shallow his understanding of her truly was.
Jiu Yue was like a treasure trove—and he had barely scraped the surface.
So many of her thoughts and ways of doing things were so clear and penetrating, as if she had already stepped beyond life and death itself.
