To make sure the Ji brothers could better serve as Jiu Yue’s obedient “beasts of burden,” Jiu Yue had Shao Qing select a private academy in the capital for Ji Zhouye and the other two to attend.
The National University was out of the question, and even the prestigious academies of the capital were impossible.
But, as expected of the capital, there were far more academies than in Qingshui County.
The three of them immediately packed their bedding and rushed off to study.
The mansion fell quiet for the first time in a while.
Today also happened to be the day Ji Chaomian and Ji Yiqing were taking the palace exam.
At such a grand occasion, Jiu Yue unusually said a few comforting words to them—nothing more than telling them to do their best and that it was okay if their rankings weren’t high.
Of course, if one ignored the look in Jiu Yue’s eyes that seemed to drill holes into her brothers, they might barely believe her words.
After they left, Jiu Yue finally stepped out. She was heading to the General’s residence today, as Shen Zongsheng’s recovery was going fairly well.
Jiu Yue also planned to adjust some acupuncture and refine her prescriptions along the way.
It was only after arriving in the ancient era that Jiu Yue realized many doctors merely memorized prescriptions rather than adjusting dosages according to the patient’s condition.
No wonder many said Chinese medicine treats the root, not the symptoms—it was just too slow.
But with slight adjustments to the dosage, many problems could be resolved. While not as fast as Western medicine, it could genuinely address the root of the issue.
Just as Jiu Yue stepped outside, a familiar whip came flying toward her again.
So annoying!
Jiu Yue clicked her tongue. Ling Yue blinked innocently, then obediently let Jiu Yue tie her up with the whip.
She stumbled to the ground at Jiu Yue’s feet, then spat out a fierce threat: “I will defeat you.”
Jiu Yue thought of that popular animated show sweeping across Huaguo. It was really reminiscent!
Though there was a silver note as payment, every time they came to cause trouble like this, Jiu Yue felt increasingly exasperated.
Ling Yue lay on the ground, waiting for Jiu Yue to undo the whip as usual. But instead, Jiu Yue looked down at her, seemingly contemplating what to do.
Ling Mo, hiding at the corner, clenched his palms in anxiety.
He was about to rush out, only to see Jiu Yue lift Ling Yue up in one swift move.
She actually carried her!
Ling Mo screamed, watching Jiu Yue turn and head back to the residence with Ling Yue hoisted over her shoulder.
This—this is going too far!
Ling Mo saw his sister being carried off and let out a pitiful cry: “Sister!” He stumbled and chased after them.
Jiu Yue turned her cold face toward him and, with a single glance, froze Ling Mo in place. He didn’t dare move.
Seeing his pitiful expression, Jiu Yue sneered: “You’re coming in too!”
Ling Mo could only stammer: “Where… where are you carrying the Princess?” and obediently followed behind Jiu Yue.
This time, Jiu Yue didn’t undo Ling Yue’s whip at all.
She simply watched as Ling Yue stood there tied up like a meat dumpling, rigid and helpless.
Ling Yue had been brimming with confidence, her chin held high, staring down at Jiu Yue. She was a princess—the only princess of the Ling residence! Surely Jiu Yue wouldn’t dare do anything to her…
But…
As time slowly passed, Ling Yue and Ling Mo noticed Jiu Yue sat in the main seat, silent, expressionless yet half-smiling, looking down at them from above.
In that instant, both felt an unnameable, bone-deep terror rise inside them.
They truly felt Jiu Yue’s formidable aura.
This kind of presence, honestly, Ling Yue and Ling Mo had only ever felt in the various generals who had been hardened on the battlefield—a ruthless aura shaped by war.
Although Jiu Yue was just over twenty, her deceptive appearance made everyone think she was a young lady. But how could a young lady exude such a terrifying aura?
“What… what… what are you going to do to us?”
Ling Mo thought about himself—he was the heir, big and strong, and needed to protect his sister. He silently stepped in front of Ling Yue, shielding the little girl who had been tied up like a meat dumpling.
Jiu Yue sneered: “Shouldn’t that be what I’m asking the heir and the princess?”
She laughed in disbelief. They kept provoking her without considering the consequences. If it weren’t for the one hundred taels of silver, she wouldn’t have restrained herself the first time.
“What do you want to do?”
Ling Mo lowered his head. At this age, boys’ pride was strongest. He didn’t want to admit that his sister couldn’t win, so he had to go back, train harder, and endure these occasional provocations?
Ling Yue stayed silent, embarrassed. No matter how much she practiced, no matter how diligent she was, Jiu Yue could pin her down with a single move—it was infuriating.
Jiu Yue stood up. Though slightly shorter than Ling Mo, she still looked up to speak to him. But the sheer aura radiating from her—from the soles of her feet upward—made her feel like a natural ruler.
“Consider this the last time,” Jiu Yue glanced at Ling Yue. Want to be defeated? Better to be remade and reborn.
If not for considering that they were the children of a noble house, Jiu Yue wouldn’t have restrained herself at all. One step forward, and her temper would erupt; one step back, and it only fueled her anger.
Ling Yue blinked, peeking from behind Ling Mo: “So… I can’t come to spar with you anymore?”
Jiu Yue rolled her eyes in exasperation: “You call this sparring?”
Ling Yue lowered her head, embarrassed.
“I’m single-handedly thrashing you! If you want to win, it’s faster to be reborn!”
Ling Mo, seeing his sister’s pitiful expression, clenched his fists in frustration. Meeting Jiu Yue’s gaze reminded him of the alleyway fight, where he had been beaten until he was wailing like a ghost—still vivid in memory.
He pressed his lips together, angry and unsure what to do.
At that moment, Shao Qing stumbled in.
Seeing Jiu Yue merely standing there, while the Ling heir and princess, though slightly humiliated, were otherwise unharmed, Shao Qing felt a wave of clarity.
Who knew the servants had gone running to the study in panic, reporting that Jiu Yue had carried off the Ling children? Shao Qing’s mind had nearly gone haywire.
Why was it that whenever the brother-in-law or eldest brother was otherwise occupied, Jiu Yue always did something that made their hearts race?
Jiu Yue waved her hand, not bothering about Shao Qing’s presence: “Shao Qing, see them out.”
Shao Qing wiped the cold sweat from his forehead: “Yes, Master.”
Jiu Yue stepped over the threshold, leaving behind only a cold remark: “Stop wasting your efforts—it’s very irritating!”
Ling Yue blinked, wanting to cry, but pride wouldn’t allow it. She forced herself to hold it back.
