Once winter set in, the weather changed without warning.

One day the sky was clear and bright; by the next evening, dark clouds hung so low it felt as though the heavens might collapse. Rolling in from the northern horizon, the heavy clouds carried a suffocating pressure.

“It’s going to pour,” Xie Zi’an said, looking up at the sky while gathering the drying tools in the courtyard. He spoke to Jiang Suisui, who was inspecting the doors and windows.

“Not rain—snow,” Gu Yan said as he strode in from outside. The tip of his nose was red from the cold wind. “There’s snow in the air. And judging by those clouds, it won’t be light.”

Having spent years in the northern frontier, he possessed a beast-like instinct for changes in weather.

Hearing this, Jiang Suisui’s expression grew grave.

Snow would be a tremendous test for the newly built greenhouses. Though their roofs were covered with thick straw mats, they were no real rooftops. If snow accumulated too heavily, the enormous weight could crush the wooden frames.

If a greenhouse collapsed, the delicate seedlings they had painstakingly cultivated would likely be destroyed.

“Chunxing!” Jiang Suisui called out sharply. “Wake everyone up! Wei Ziqian, Qian Duoduo—all the boys—assemble in the courtyard immediately! Hurry!”

“I’ll arrange the manpower!” Gu Yan immediately grasped the seriousness of the situation. Without further questions, he turned and strode toward the boys’ dormitory.

They exchanged no unnecessary words, yet both reacted at the same instant with decisive speed.

Soon, the entire estate was mobilized.

Everyone—whether youths or hired hands—was summoned to the courtyard.

“There may be heavy snow tonight!” Jiang Suisui stood on the steps, her voice carrying clearly to every ear. “We have two tasks! First, reinforce all the greenhouses! Second, be ready at any moment to clear snow from the roofs!”

“Now, listen to your assignments!”

She took out a prepared roster and began allocating tasks swiftly.

“Master Shen, lead the agricultural team to inspect every greenhouse’s ventilation and insulation. Make sure the seedlings don’t suffer frost damage!”

“Qian Duoduo, take ten of the strongest men to the storeroom. Move out all the wooden stakes and hemp ropes—reinforce the load-bearing pillars of the greenhouses!”

“Chunxing, take several nimble women to the kitchen. Prepare hot soup and ginger tea for supply at all times!”

Her voice was steady and firm. Each instruction was clear and precise, instantly calming the unease in everyone’s hearts.

Beside her, Gu Yan was making his own deployments in his own way.

“Wei Ziqian!” he barked.

“Here!” Wei Ziqian instinctively straightened his back.

“Form a patrol team of ten! From now on, inspect every greenhouse once every half hour! If you notice anything unusual, report immediately!”

“Li Rui! Form the remaining men into a reserve unit! Prepare brooms, wooden rakes, and any tools available! The moment it starts snowing, get onto the greenhouse roofs and clear the snow—no delays!”

“Does everyone understand?” Gu Yan’s gaze was sharp as a hawk’s.

“Understood!” the crowd roared in unison, their voices shaking the open fields.

Thus, before the blizzard even arrived, a battle against the heavens—to protect their home—unfolded in tense yet orderly fashion.

Jiang Suisui oversaw logistics and supply distribution, ensuring every team received tools and materials the moment they were needed. Her mind operated like the most precise machine, calculating every bit of manpower and resources across the estate.

Gu Yan handled on-site command and coordination. He applied battlefield strategies here—patrols, reserves, logistics—each link arranged with meticulous order. He even established temporary “watch posts,” positioning the sharpest-eyed youths at high vantage points to monitor the wind and snow.

Husband and wife—one managing the internal affairs, the other directing operations outside. One calculating with care, the other leading the charge.

Though it was their first time working together, their coordination was flawless.

As if they had fought side by side countless times before.

By nightfall, the first snowflake finally drifted down.

At first it was only fine flurries.

But soon, it turned into goose-feather snow, sweeping across the entire estate under the howling northern wind.

“It’s snowing!”

“The reserve team—onto the roofs!” Gu Yan ordered.

Li Rui immediately led the prepared boys up the ladders to the broad, gently sloped greenhouse roofs.

The surface was slippery, and the wind howled fiercely. But each boy gritted his teeth, relying on the balance they had trained to steady themselves. Wielding long brooms, they swept the freshly fallen snow down to the ground with all their strength.

The snowfall was heavy. No sooner had they cleared one section than it was covered again in white.

It was destined to be a sleepless night.

Carrying a windproof lantern, Jiang Suisui moved back and forth between the greenhouses. She checked the indoor temperatures, examined the seedlings, and delivered steaming ginger tea to the boys fighting the storm.

“Madam, please go back and rest! We’ve got this!” Qian Duoduo puffed white breath into the air as he braced a new support beam firmly beneath a main pillar with his sturdy arms.

“It’s alright—I’m not cold.” Jiang Suisui handed him a bowl of ginger tea. “Drink this and warm yourself. You’ve worked hard tonight.”

Up on the roof, Gu Yan had climbed up personally.

He didn’t carry a broom, but a wooden rake. With his great strength, one sweep cleared a wide swath of snow. His presence was like a stabilizing pillar in the sea—everyone fighting atop the roof felt reassured because he was there.

Amid the wind and snow, his tall figure stood like a guardian deity.

Standing below, Jiang Suisui tilted her head to watch the man vigorously swinging his rake in the storm.

The lantern’s glow illuminated only a small patch at her feet. Snowflakes landed on her hair and shoulders, quickly forming a thin white layer.

As she watched him, he seemed to sense her gaze. Between swings of the rake, he lowered his head and looked in her direction.

Their eyes met once more through the swirling snow.

This time, there was no distance or tentative probing in their gazes.

Only unspoken, absolute trust and understanding.

The blizzard raged through the entire night.

It did not gradually cease until dawn.

The whole estate lay blanketed in thick, pristine snow.

Everyone was utterly exhausted. But when they saw that the dozen or so greenhouses still stood intact after enduring the night’s storm, joy of victory spread across every face.

Not a single seedling inside had suffered frost damage. They remained lush and green, brimming with vitality.

“We… we did it!” Wei Ziqian tossed aside his broom and dropped onto the snow, laughing loudly.

The other boys cheered as well. They hugged one another, flinging snow playfully, releasing all the exhilaration of triumph.

Gu Yan climbed down from the roof. Frost clung to his eyebrows and hair.

Jiang Suisui approached carrying a food container.

She opened it to reveal a bowl of steaming ginseng chicken soup.

“Drink it while it’s hot,” she said, handing him the bowl. “You didn’t sleep at all last night.”

Gu Yan looked at her—at the faint red veins in her eyes from staying up all night. Something hardened deep within him suddenly softened.

He accepted the bowl without a word and lowered his head, drinking in large mouthfuls.

The warm, richly fragrant ginseng broth slid into his stomach, instantly dispelling the cold and exhaustion.

A warmth spread through his body—and into his heart.

He knew that from this moment on, between him and this place—this home—an inseverable bond had finally been formed.
