Sun Desheng was sitting beside Che Qianzi. Seeing him wake up, he immediately had someone bring over some warm water.
While helping the little Taoist drink, he said with a smile, “Not to mention, brother, you’re too impatient. Once I explain things clearly to Secretary Yang, one-tenth of the Golden Platform and all the treasures inside won’t be a small amount.”
After resting for a while, Che Qianzi finally accepted that everything concerning the ancient tomb had been settled.
Looking around at the people on the plane, he asked Sun Desheng, “You’re taking me back to Beijing? What about Fatty Huang and the others?”
Sun Desheng chuckled.
“They’re on the next flight. Brother, not to mention, you’ve just woken up and you’re already worrying about other people. You’re too kind.”
“I’m worried about that old fool?”
Che Qianzi snorted.
“If you think about it, we were dragged into this mess because Fatty Huang set us up. Is that it? He just pretends nothing happened? He ought to at least give us some explanation—or some compensation. By the way, who got that Acacia Gu in the end?”
“The Acacia Gu went with Old Huang. That’s the only thing he wanted—and it wasn’t even for himself.”
Sun Desheng grinned and glanced at Shen La, who was dozing off across from them.
“The person behind Huang Ran wanted it. Even Secretary Yang wouldn’t dare stop that. But asking Old Huang for compensation? Brother, I fully support that. He already said he’d treat us to a simple meal after we get back to Beijing. Bring it up then. I’ll back you up. I won’t promise too much, but squeezing three to five million out of him shouldn’t be difficult.”
After losing more than ten tons of gold, Che Qianzi could only pin his hopes on those three to five million.
Before he could say anything else, the plane began descending.
Not long afterward, it landed at the Capital Airport.
Vehicles from the Bureau of Civil Affairs and Investigations were already waiting on the tarmac.
After getting off the plane, Sun Desheng pulled Shen La and Che Qianzi into a separate business van. They followed the convoy out of the airport, but after leaving the expressway, their vehicle separated from the others and headed west toward Beijing.
By then, dusk was approaching.
Che Qianzi looked at Sun Desheng and asked, “Fatty, where are you taking me? Let me say this first—don’t take me somewhere weird. Places like Heaven Above, Earth Below or Heavenly Paradise or whatever. I’m not that kind of person.”
Sun Desheng laughed.
“Those places are ancient history. Brother, even though I’ve been there a few times, I went with a critical eye. Honestly, I’m not that kind of person either.”
He continued:
“You’re still recovering, so I’m taking you to my place for a few days. Your sister-in-law wants to meet you too. Your house has already been fixed up, but it doesn’t have any warmth in it. You should stay with us for now.”
“You want me to stay at your house?”
Che Qianzi was stunned.
“Come on, I’m a grown man. How can I just live in someone else’s house? Besides, you’ve got a wife and kids. It wouldn’t be convenient.”
Sun Desheng smiled.
“We’re brothers. What’s inconvenient about a younger brother staying with his elder brother? There’s a saying: an elder brother’s wife is like a mother. Just treat your sister-in-law like your own mother. Whatever you want to eat, let her cook it. If she can’t, we’ll order takeout. La Zi, you’re staying over too. Tonight the three of us brothers will drink ourselves silly. Not to mention, it’s been a while since we’ve gotten together.”
“Not tonight.”
Shen La smiled bitterly and took out his phone, opening his WeChat group.
Showing the screen to Sun Desheng, he said, “My third uncle arranged another blind date for me. He specifically told me I absolutely have to go tonight. The girl’s meeting place is downstairs from my apartment.”
“Oh ho… this one’s better than the last one.”
Sun Desheng grabbed the phone and looked it over.
Grinning, he said, “This is important, so I won’t stop you. If this one works out, bring her along to Old Huang’s dinner. Let the girl see our strength.”
Shen La smiled helplessly.
“Huang Ran’s treating everyone to dinner. What strength do I have to show? Let him impress her?”
Then he said to the driver:
“Sir, stop in front of the barbershop ahead. I’ll get out there. Dasheng, brother, see you at the Bureau tomorrow. I’ve got over an hour before the date. I need to dye my hair first.”
After saying goodbye to Sun Desheng and Che Qianzi, Shen La got off early.
The business van continued onward, and whether Che Qianzi liked it or not, Sun Desheng dragged him home.
Sun Desheng lived in a fairly upscale residential complex in Beijing.
They came up directly from the underground garage and took the elevator to the top floor.
Che Qianzi had assumed that someone like Sun Desheng would either live in a villa or own the entire floor.
Unexpectedly, his home occupied only a single unit on the top floor.
After Sun Desheng rang the bell, a young woman opened the door.
Seeing her husband bringing a young man home, she first smiled warmly at Che Qianzi and said, “You must be our little brother. Come in quickly. Fatty, get him a pair of slippers. Little brother, your brother only told me this afternoon that you’d be staying over. I didn’t have time to prepare anything, so please don’t mind.”
After speaking to Che Qianzi, she turned and called into the house, “Xiao Wu, Daddy’s home. Come greet your father!”
Before her words had faded, a little girl in a baby walker came zooming out of the room.
Without even looking closely, she threw herself into Che Qianzi’s arms and said in a babyish voice, “Daddy, you’re back! Why are you thinner? Mommy said you stepped down from your position. Did Uncle Yang stop feeding you?”
Halfway through, she finally realized that the fat man beside her was actually her father.
Embarrassed, she hurried into Sun Desheng’s arms and secretly peeked at the awkward-looking Che Qianzi.
At that moment, Che Qianzi thought to himself:
She mistook me for Shen La…
The woman also looked embarrassed.
After laughing and scolding her daughter lightly, she carried the little girl back into the room.
Taking advantage of the moment, Che Qianzi changed into slippers and entered the apartment.
The place was only about 120 square meters.
Considering how Sun Desheng usually spent money lavishly and casually talked about billions, Che Qianzi had expected something much grander.
Who would have thought that the fat man lived in an ordinary home like everyone else?
Seeing what he was thinking, Sun Desheng laughed.
“Back then, I wanted to buy your sister-in-law a huge house. But she absolutely refused. She’s from Nanjing. When she was little, she lived with her mother in an old mansion there. A huge place with several courtyards, and it was just the two of them. Growing up in such a big house scared her. She prefers smaller homes, so I bought this place instead.”
Che Qianzi believed him.
Sun Desheng was rich enough that there was no need to make up stories about such things.
Still puzzled, he asked, “Then why not buy a luxury villa? Fatty, I don’t know exactly how much money you have, but that shouldn’t be difficult for you.”
Sun Desheng sighed bitterly.
“Don’t even mention it. At first, I did buy a luxury home. But guess what? I knew all the neighbors upstairs and downstairs.”
He smiled helplessly and continued:
“Not to mention, rich people are all suspicious. Every little thing in the house makes them think someone’s using sorcery to harm them. During the first few days after your sister-in-law and I moved in, people knocked on our door every night. If the dog barked, they thought there were ghosts. If their wives talked in their sleep, they thought they were possessed.”
He sighed again.
“These wealthy people all see each other every day, and it’s not easy to offend them. In the end, my wife and I discussed it and moved here.”
