Che Qianzi recovered quickly. By now, he could already drink water and eat liquid food.
Hearing Shen La’s question, he rolled his eyes and said, “What seed? Who do you think I am? My master, that old geezer? I’m an honest man. I don’t watch that kind of weird stuff.”
“You know exactly what I mean,” Shen La replied, looking at him. “I’m talking about the power that blew up the Five Poisons spider. Since you’re Sun Dasheng’s brother, you’re my brother too. Whatever it is, we’ll cover for you.”
“You think I need you to cover for me? I’ve got a biological son!”
Che Qianzi was no pushover. Hearing something strange in Shen La’s tone, he immediately fired back.
Seeing the conversation taking a bad turn, Sun Desheng hurried over to smooth things out.
“Not to mention, La Zi, the way you keep talking about ‘seeds’ is misleading. American seeds or Japanese seeds? Anyone would misunderstand.”
Then he turned to Che Qianzi.
“Brother, La Zi means well. What he’s asking is, where did your power come from?”
“Where did it come from? Born with it.”
Che Qianzi glanced at Sun Desheng and continued:
“Fatty, my skills were earned one fight at a time. Go ask around my hometown. From the video parlors in the county to the gate of our Taoist temple, I beat so many people they called me Daddy. Shen La, don’t look unconvinced. If we get the chance… let’s spar.”
Shen La was so annoyed that he began panting heavily.
Ignoring Che Qianzi, he turned to Sun Desheng.
“Dasheng, I won’t ask him anymore. But when Director Wu asks, you’d better think up an explanation. Director Wu isn’t easy to fool.”
“With me around, if Director Wu asks, we’ll just say I gave my brother the seed.”
Sun Desheng chuckled and continued:
“Go check on Old Huang and Miss Meng. If Qiqi doesn’t wake up soon, Stutterer Zhang is going to cry himself blind. Those two should’ve switched genders. Zhang Zhiyan acts more like a little wife.”
Knowing that Sun Desheng was trying to send him away, Shen La nodded and left the room.
Only Sun Desheng and Yang Xiao remained with Che Qianzi.
Seeing Shen La gone, Sun Desheng grinned.
“Brother, La Zi means well. To tell you the truth, your power is very similar to Director Wu’s. He wants to understand it better, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.”
Che Qianzi looked surprised.
“You mean that pretty-boy Wu Rendi? He fought his way there too? No way. He looks soft and delicate. If he got into a fight, he’d be the one getting beaten. I’ve seen plenty like him…”
The moment those words left his mouth, Yang Xiao’s face changed.
He quickly looked at Sun Desheng and said:
“I didn’t hear anything! Dasheng, make sure your brother keeps his mouth shut. My wife is still young—I don’t want to get dragged into this.”
Sun Desheng laughed.
“Relax, Old Yang. If anything happens to my brother, I’ll take responsibility. Even if Director Wu hears something, let him come to me.”
Yang Xiao blinked several times.
Then, with a strange expression, he said quietly:
“Something’s off… Dasheng, you’re acting like you don’t even put Director Wu in your eyes. Who exactly is your brother? Someone with backing even greater than Director Wu’s? Then there can only be… the one out at sea…”
“Old Yang, stop overthinking. I’ve still got something to ask you.”
Seeing that Che Qianzi had perked up his ears, waiting to hear who “the one at sea” was, Sun Desheng immediately changed the subject.
“You said in the cave that some master gave you advice. But his advice wasn’t completely accurate—you still couldn’t resist and got overturned in the end.”
Yang Xiao sighed softly.
“Dasheng, be fair. If I hadn’t revealed myself in the end, would I have been turned around?”
Then he continued:
“I won’t hide it from you. After I escaped from the burial pit, I stayed hidden beside you the entire time. I secretly solved several problems for you. What a pity… if I hadn’t failed to hold back at the end…”
Sun Desheng nodded.
“True. If you hadn’t shown yourself, you’d probably have ambushed that old bastard Wan Changluo.”
Then he asked:
“Who was this master? I haven’t seen you getting close to any great experts recently.”
Seeing that only the three of them were present, Yang Xiao finally spoke.
“I’m not supposed to tell others, but it’s fine for you brothers. Remember the Jiuhe Ghost Market? Zuo Pan Peng Hezai wanted me to work for him.”
He continued:
“He said I was the most suitable candidate. Not just because Director Wu was backing me, but because, when it came to assassination, I was capable enough to accomplish the task.
After talking with him, I suddenly understood everything.
What I learned was the art of manipulating spirits and ghosts for assassination—not Yang Jun’s style of frontal combat.
I was supposed to hide in the shadows and strike unexpectedly.
Think about it, Dasheng.
Every time I got turned around in the past, wasn’t it because there was a crowd around and I foolishly charged to the front, fighting people head-on?
I’m an assassin!
But I kept acting like a vanguard.
If I don’t get overturned doing that, what else should I expect?”
Sun Desheng pondered his words and nodded.
“No wonder Peng Hezai became the Left Judge. His perspective really is different. Director Wu said the same thing years ago. In direct combat, you’re inferior to Yang Jun. But if it came to a life-and-death struggle…Yang Jun would definitely die at your hands.”
“You two are drifting too far away. Talk about something closer to home.”
Che Qianzi wasn’t interested in the topic and interrupted directly.
“What happened to that old bastard Wan? Was he locked up? Or did you quietly kill him?”
Sun Desheng replied with a grin:
“He died on his own. Not long after La Zi and the others rushed in, Wan Changluo literally died from anger.”
After a pause, he continued:
“That Five Poisons spider shared its life with him. Once the spider died, Old Wan started coughing up blood nonstop. Then he watched helplessly as La Zi and the others came in and took away the Acacia Gu he’d dreamed of obtaining his whole life. He couldn’t take the blow and actually died from rage.”
As he spoke, a strange expression appeared on Sun Desheng’s face.
“Brother, I’ve got one more thing to tell you. Don’t get excited…”
“When La Zi and Bear rushed into the cave, Old Bear reported the Golden Platform. Well… That mountain of gold really belongs to the state—”
“Brother, what’s wrong?! Don’t scare me! You’re so young—you can’t be having a stroke, can you? Doctor! Help!”
Upon hearing that the dozens of tons of gold now officially belonged to the country—and that he hadn’t even managed to keep a single flake for himself—Che Qianzi aggravated his injuries in his excitement.
His eyes rolled back, and he fainted on the hospital bed.
Sun Desheng shouted frantically for doctors to save his brother.
While unconscious, Che Qianzi vaguely heard Sun Desheng saying:
“You should’ve let me finish! According to our Bureau’s rules, one-tenth of recovered assets goes into the Bureau’s operational funds. One-tenth…That’s not a small amount. I’ll find a way to transfer it to you…”
When Che Qianzi opened his eyes again, he was no longer in the ICU.
Instead, he found himself aboard an airplane flying at an altitude of tens of thousands of meters.
Sun Desheng, Yang Xiao, Shen La, and the others were all on the same flight…
