At that moment, Xiao Yifeng moved closer to Sun Desheng and whispered, “Dasheng, your little brother has been inside for over twenty minutes. We haven’t heard a sound from him for quite a while now. This doesn’t look good…”
Unable to hold back any longer, Fatty Sun turned to the investigators behind him and shouted,
“Everybody, break down the kitchen door! We absolutely can’t let anything happen. Somebody call 120 first and reserve an ICU room…”
After all, Sun Desheng had once been the Bureau’s director. At his command, the investigators rushed forward together and smashed the kitchen door open.
The crowd rushed inside—and all of them froze in astonishment.
Che Qianzi was sitting comfortably on top of a chopping board, perfectly unharmed.
In the opposite corner, the enormous white dog was curled up in a ball.
Beside the little Daoist was a huge basin full of cooked meat. The basin clearly wasn’t from the kitchen, and nobody knew where he had gotten it.
The moment the door opened, Yin Bai immediately tried to run outside.
Che Qianzi quickly grabbed a chunk of meat and threw it at the giant white dog.
“Where are you going? Didn’t we agree we’d be loving friends who eat dog meat together? Stay there! You forgot how happy you were when you bit me, huh?”
As he spoke, he tossed another piece of meat.
Terrified, Yin Bai hurriedly dodged.
It didn’t even dare touch the meat on the floor.
Curling up in the corner again, the giant white dog trembled and even lost control of its bladder.
Sun Desheng was stunned.
Walking over to Che Qianzi, he looked at the basin of cooked meat and then at the pitiful white dog.
With a bitter smile, he asked,
“Brother, where did you get dog meat? Seriously, how did you know Yin Bai was afraid of this?”
Che Qianzi made a face at him.
“You think those two hundred stitches were for nothing? You think I spent half a month in the ICU for free?”
He continued, “These past two weeks, I’ve been thinking about how to deal with this damn dog. If we fought head-on, I’d probably end up back in the ICU.
If brute force doesn’t work, try something soft. If soft doesn’t work, use something crooked.
I remembered what that old geezer at home used to scare me with when I was little:
‘Go to sleep, or the Big Hairy Monkey that eats children will come and take naughty kids away.’
I was afraid of man-eating monkeys.
So why wouldn’t a dog be afraid of people who eat dog meat?
At worst, I’d just renew my ICU stay for another half month.
How else could I vent my anger if I didn’t at least try?
I spent several days asking nurses where I could buy dog meat. Finally, I found a place that secretly sold it.
This morning, I sneaked out early.
After setting aside the bus fare back to the Bureau, I spent every remaining penny on dog meat.”
As he spoke, he noticed Yin Bai trying to escape again.
Picking up another chunk of meat, he threw it and shouted, “Where are you running? I haven’t apologized to you yet! Sorry! I’m treating you to dog meat!”
After dodging the flying piece of meat, Yin Bai looked desperately at Sun Desheng and whimpered repeatedly, clearly asking him for help.
Sun Desheng smiled helplessly.
“Brother, before I plead for him, let me ask you something. What if Yin Bai wasn’t afraid of dog meat?”
Che Qianzi shrugged.
“Then I’d just renew my ICU stay. I figured it’d be too embarrassed to bite me to death for your sake. Then I’d think of some other way to deal with it. Looks like I got lucky and succeeded on my first try.”
Sun Desheng laughed helplessly.
“Brother, for my sake, let him off this time. No matter what, he’s the Bureau’s guardian beast. You’ve frightened him like this—it’s embarrassing for the Bureau. Give me some face and let it go.”
“It’s not up to me.”
Che Qianzi turned toward the shivering white dog.
“I’m asking you. Do you submit or not? If not, we’ll keep going. I’ll feed you another piece of dog meat and we’ll be good friends who eat dog meat together.”
The giant white dog could understand human speech.
Lying flat on the ground, it kept making pitiful sounds.
“Woo… woo…”
But to everyone’s ears, it almost sounded like:
“I submit… I submit…”
Only then did Che Qianzi point toward the doorway.
“Good. Get out. And in the future, mind your manners when you see me. Don’t go acting wild again.”
As though receiving an imperial decree, Yin Bai sprang to its feet and fled out of the kitchen at full speed.
Watching the mighty demon wolf escape in panic, Sun Desheng wore a strange expression.
“Brother, in my entire life, I’ve only seen Yin Bai bullied twice. The first time was when Director Wu taught it a lesson. And the second time is today—with you.”
“Come on, we’re brothers. No need to be polite.”
As he spoke, Che Qianzi unbuttoned his shirt.
Underneath, his body was drenched in cold sweat.
Clearly, he had been scared out of his wits as well and had simply been forcing himself to hold on.
Seeing the strange looks from the surrounding investigators, Sun Desheng smiled bitterly and dragged Che Qianzi away from the kitchen.
His own office had already been reassigned, so he headed toward the office of Hao Wenming, director of the First Division.
Just as they stepped out of the cafeteria, they encountered an old acquaintance.
A middle-aged man in an expensive suit with slicked-back hair approached.
Spotting Sun Desheng from afar, he greeted warmly, “Director Sun, long time no see! I heard you’ve been back for months, but you never came to visit my company.”
Although the man tried hard to hide it, Che Qianzi could still hear traces of a Hong Kong accent.
Seeing the man, Sun Desheng grinned.
Walking over, he said, “Old Ma, it has been a while. Didn’t I hear you died before the New Year? I told people rumors can’t be trusted. How could something so wonderful actually happen?”
The middle-aged man awkwardly forced a smile.
“Right, right. Rumors are nonsense. Those people are just jealous of me. I, Ma Xiaolin, have always treated Heaven, Earth, and my friends well. Blind Jin once said I’d accumulated virtue in my previous life and would live to be a hundred.”
“Oh…”
Sun Desheng nodded seriously.
“The rumor I heard was that you’d die from a lack of virtue.”
After saying that, he burst out laughing.
Then he pulled Che Qianzi over.
“Enough joking.
Come, let me introduce you.
This is Ma Xiaolin, chairman of the Ma Group and chairman of three publicly listed companies.
Brother, come over.
Old Ma, this is my own brother, Che Qianzi.
He’s a Daoist from the Jizhen Temple in Zhengdong Township, He’an County, Liaodong.
His master is Kong Dalong.”
“Oh…”
“Director Sun’s younger brother truly has an extraordinary bearing.”
Ma Xiaolin smiled politely.
“How about taking a position in my company? I’d definitely take good care of Director Sun’s younger brother.”
After so many years, Ma Xiaolin had long forgotten Gao Liang’s request.
Back then, Gao Liang had entrusted him with supporting two Daoists, one old and one young.
Although the memory seemed vaguely familiar, he simply couldn’t recall who they were.
He was merely exchanging polite words.
Seeing that Ma Xiaolin had failed to recognize Che Qianzi, Sun Desheng did not press the issue.
Smiling, he asked, “Old Ma, what brings you to the Bureau? Don’t tell me your family got cursed again and your house is haunted?”
“Director Sun, you really love joking.”
Ma Xiaolin smiled awkwardly.
“I’m here to see Secretary Yang.
He asked me to sponsor several Daoist temples—
Wait…
You’re Che Qianzi?”
At that instant, a bolt of lightning seemed to flash through Ma Xiaolin’s mind.
He suddenly remembered Gao Liang’s request from years ago.
He had been asked to support two Daoists, one old and one young.
But those two spent money like water, and last year he had cut off their allowance.
And wasn’t the younger Daoist named Che Qianzi?
Wasn’t his temple precisely the Jizhen Temple in Zhengdong Township, He’an County, Liaodong?
Now this kid was standing beside Sun Desheng—and Sun Desheng even called him his brother.
It seemed he had been mistaken all along.
Che Qianzi…wasn’t Gao Liang’s illegitimate son after all.
