BPIFC -Volume 1 – Chapter 46 The Legendary Man of the ICU

Bureau of Paranormal Investigation: The Final Chapter 7 min read 46 of 120 3

Because Sun Desheng had drunk himself senseless, the three brothers of the ICU never officially became sworn brothers. Otherwise, it would have become one of the Bureau’s legendary stories.

Before leaving, Shen La gave the orderly responsible for taking care of Che Qianzi a jar of ointment and two thousand yuan, instructing him to apply a thin layer to the boy’s wounds. Normally, medicine of unknown origin would never be used, but for the sake of the money, the orderly complied.

After applying the ointment, Che Qianzi was able to get out of bed the next day.

Three days later, after undergoing a series of examinations, a miracle in medical history occurred—the hospital informed him that he could be discharged.

Upon hearing the news, Sun Desheng personally came to the hospital and brought Che Qianzi back to the Bureau.

After returning, Sun Desheng grinned and said, “Brother, from now on, leave everything to your big brother.

I’ve prepared an apartment for you. It’s in the residential building right behind the Bureau—a proper three-bedroom place. I used to live there before I got married. Now it’s yours.

Who would’ve thought you’d recover so fast? Only three days and you’re already discharged. I didn’t have time to clean the place up, so I hired a housekeeping company. They’ll replace the bedding and daily necessities, and by tonight it should be ready.

Tonight, your big brother will throw you a feast. We’ll invite La Zi and a few close friends.

We’re not going home until we drink ourselves sick!”

Just then, the elevator doors in the lobby opened.

Out waddled an enormous white dog.

Several investigators had been waiting for the elevator, but the moment they saw the dog, fear appeared on their faces and they hurriedly stepped aside to clear the path.

The fat white dog emerged and spotted Sun Desheng behind it.

It waddled over and let out a few soft whimpers.

“Wooo… wooo…”

Sun Desheng laughed and patted its head.

“Go back first. I’ll come find you later. The cafeteria made braised beef shank today. I’ll get you ten or twenty pounds of it.”

The white dog actually grinned, revealing an unmistakable smile, then waddled away out of the Bureau.

After watching it leave, Sun Desheng turned to Che Qianzi and said seriously, “Brother, remember this.

Besides the great Director Wu, the one person in the Bureau you absolutely cannot offend is this Yin Bai.

No matter what, don’t provoke it.

If you’re angry, go beat up the people in Second Division instead.

But don’t take it out on this dog.

Remember that. Never forget it.”

“A dog can’t be offended?”

Che Qianzi rolled his eyes.

“You should tell that to the dog. If it annoys me someday, I’ll stew it and eat the meat. A mutt like that actually has a name? Yin Bai? Bah. Throw it into a dog-meat restaurant and it’ll learn some manners.”

“Brother, I’m not joking. That’s not an ordinary dog—it’s a wolf…”

Before Sun Desheng could continue, he saw Shen La walking in.

“La Zi, perfect timing. Our brother’s out of the hospital today. By the way, is Director Wu in Sixth Division? I should take the kid over and let him show his face.”

“Director Wu?”

Shen La nodded to Che Qianzi and replied, “He hasn’t come back in several days. You know what he’s like. He only shows up occasionally these days. Last time was during your meeting in Second Division. Oh, and Secretary Yang has been getting close to Director Wu lately. You want to…”

Hearing that Wu Rendi wasn’t in the Bureau, Sun Desheng actually looked relieved.

“Heh, can’t be helped. I’ll take our brother to meet him next time he comes back. Secretary Yang’s around too? Fine. We’ll visit him sometime. Oh, by the way, that short guy from America called yesterday. He’s looking for someone to help him. La Zi, if you’ve got time…”

As soon as Shen La appeared, Sun Desheng completely forgot about warning Che Qianzi regarding Yin Bai.

The two men walked off to the side, whispering among themselves.

Feeling ignored, Che Qianzi wandered around the lobby in boredom.

When he reached the front entrance, he saw the fat white dog returning to the Bureau.

At his age, Che Qianzi was particularly good at inviting disaster.

If Sun Desheng hadn’t specifically warned him about Yin Bai, he probably wouldn’t even have thought of provoking it.

Seeing the dog enter, the little Daoist whistled and shouted,

“Hey, Yin Bai! Did you get so fat from eating—”

Before he could finish, the white dog suddenly let out a howl.

“AWOOOO!”

Its body instantly expanded four or five times in size.

Before Che Qianzi could react, the beast pounced on him.

He never expected a dog to attack him directly.

Before he could even defend himself, his vision went black.

When Che Qianzi regained consciousness, he found himself back in the familiar ICU.

He was wrapped in thick bandages like a rice dumpling.

Even moving his arm made him grimace in pain.

Sun Desheng was sitting in front of him.

Seeing the little Daoist wake up, Fatty Sun forced a bitter smile.

“Brother…

Didn’t I specifically tell you not to provoke that dog?

Look at you now. Over two hundred stitches.

Two doctors had to take turns sewing you up. Their arms practically gave out.

Didn’t I tell you less than five minutes beforehand?

If I hadn’t, I could blame myself.

But now what am I supposed to say?

One chance in ten thousand, and something happens to you.

If you died, would this count as suicide?”

Seeing Che Qianzi’s troubled expression, Sun Desheng sighed.

“Listen to your big brother.

The Bureau’s waters are deeper than you imagine.

When we get back, I’ll take you to apologize to Yin Bai.

Don’t think apologizing to a dog is humiliating.

That’s a genuine wolf demon.

Its mother is the Heavenly Dog.

What? Brother, what are you saying?

Speak louder.”

Seeing Che Qianzi’s lips moving under the bandages, Sun Desheng pulled away the cloth around his face and finally heard him say,

“I can’t hold it anymore…

Get me a bedpan—

No, forget it…

Bring me some pants.

And change the sheets.”

Sun Desheng lowered his head and his expression became complicated.

“You peed on my shoes…”

Unable to abandon this troublesome brat, Sun Desheng brought him the Bureau’s famous red medicine used for treating external injuries.

After half a month of recovery, despite receiving over two hundred stitches, not a single scar remained.

On the day Che Qianzi was supposed to be discharged, Sun Desheng once again personally went to the hospital.

To his surprise, the nurses informed him that Che Qianzi had already checked himself out early that morning, leaving behind a mountain of paperwork for him to handle.

The kid discharged himself?

Sun Desheng was puzzled.

While processing the paperwork, realization suddenly struck him.

His expression changed.

Forgetting all about the discharge procedures, he rushed to his car and sped toward the Bureau.

Unfortunately, a major traffic accident blocked the road, and after two full hours, he finally arrived.

Before entering, Sun Desheng first checked Yin Bai’s kennel at the rear entrance.

It was empty.

The giant white dog was nowhere to be found.

That only made him feel even more uneasy.

As he continued searching, he ran into Xiao Yifeng, the deputy director of Fifth Division, who came hurrying over.

Wiping cold sweat from his forehead, Xiao Yifeng exclaimed, “Dasheng, thank goodness you’re back!

Something’s happened.

Your dear little brother has cornered Yin Bai inside the cafeteria.

Hurry over!

No one can persuade either of them!”

That little bastard…

Does he want a lifetime membership card to the ICU?!

Cursing inwardly, Sun Desheng hurried toward the cafeteria.

Outside, thirty or forty people had already gathered.

Pushing everyone aside, Fatty Sun reached the front and saw that the kitchen doors were tightly shut.

From inside came Yin Bai’s pitiful whimpering.

“Wooo… wooo…”

Panicking, Sun Desheng shouted toward the kitchen, “Brother, give in already! Yin Bai, for my sake, give him another chance…”
