Since the day Sun Desheng had met Wu Rendi, this was the first time he was going to have a meal hosted by Director Wu. Although they were technically related, Sun Fatty still felt a certain fear toward the white-haired man.

He first took Car Qianzi back home, changed clothes, then brought his wife and child along with his “brother” to the restaurant Shao Yiyi had reserved.

Although it was Wu Rendi’s treat, he had no experience with such matters, so he still asked Sun’s wife to help book the restaurant. And it wasn’t just Sun Desheng, but also Shen La, Huang Ran, Zhang Zhiyan, and Meng Qiqi’s group.

On the way there, Sun Desheng asked his wife what Wu Rendi meant by all this—why, after coming back from a trip, he suddenly wanted to host a dinner, and even invited Huang Ran and the others. Was something going on that required them to handle a job for him? But that seemed unlikely—if Wu really had something to say, he would just say it directly. Why bother with a banquet?

“I asked too, but Uncle Wu didn’t say anything,” Shao Yiyi replied. “He just said: you’ll know when you arrive tonight. I couldn’t see anything unusual. It’s just a meal. Xiao Wu is there too—if Uncle Wu really has any complaints about you, he won’t make a fuss because of him.”

Sitting in the passenger seat, Car Qianzi suddenly said, “Fatty, are you secretly keeping a mistress outside? Is Wu Rendi forcing you to divorce? Why else would Shen La be involved? Are you giving up your position and letting La Zi take over?”

“Rubbish. I’m satisfied with your sister-in-law,” Sun Desheng laughed. “Maybe we’re just overthinking it. Maybe Director Wu just had a change of heart and wants to treat us to a meal.”

Soon, the car stopped at the restaurant entrance. After parking, Sun Desheng led his wife, child, and Car Qianzi inside, and they were guided by the manager to the reserved private room.

They were the first to arrive, half an hour early. Shao Yiyi asked for the menu and was about to order when footsteps sounded outside. Huang Ran arrived with Meng Qiqi and Zhang Zhiyan.

The three were dressed as if attending a formal gala—Western-style suits, and Meng Qiqi wore a wine-red gown with carefully done makeup. Clearly, they took this dinner very seriously.

After the two “fat men” saw each other, they both smiled.

Huang Ran spoke first: “Da Sheng, I didn’t expect you to still remember us. Inviting us to dine with Director Wu—this is a favor I owe you. I’ll repay it when I can.”

Sun Desheng chuckled. “Old Huang, if you really want to owe me a favor, that’s even better. But let me be clear: this dinner is hosted by Director Wu himself. He specifically named you three. I’ll give you a heads-up—did you recently do something to offend him? Is he here to settle accounts?”

Huang Ran was slightly surprised, though his expression remained calm and kind.

“Do you really think we’re capable of offending Director Wu?” he said with a smile. “I think it’s more likely he has something inconvenient to handle and needs our help. Being able to help him is already a blessing.”

Car Qianzi couldn’t stand Huang Ran’s almost devotional respect for Wu Rendi and blurted out, “Yeah, Wu Rendi is just picking godsons now. Old Huang, you’d better get ready to kowtow.”

Meng Qiqi immediately exploded, throwing a chopstick at him. “Where did this little brat come from? Go back to your mom’s milk! Adults are talking—shut up!”

Car Qianzi dodged the chopstick and shot back, “This isn’t a place for you either. Lost your way from the nursing home? You should hang the address around your neck next time you go out…”

Before he could finish, Meng Qiqi was already about to pounce, but Zhang Zhiyan quickly held her back.

“Qi… Qiqi… d-don’t bother with him… Director Wu is about to arrive… it wouldn’t look good…”

Hearing Wu Rendi was coming soon, Meng Qiqi finally calmed down. She even took out a compact mirror to fix her makeup.

Seeing her so serious, Zhang Zhiyan felt a bit jealous and muttered, “You… you’re already… fine…”

Car Qianzi kept provoking them: “Hey, Zhang Zhiyan, you’re really something—accompanying your girlfriend to meet her admirer. That’s some broad-mindedness. Ancient saying: a prime minister’s belly can hold a boat… or a turtle!”

Zhang Zhiyan finally snapped. “You little brat! Where are your parents? I’ll teach you a lesson for them!”

Just as things were about to escalate, there was a knock at the door.

Everyone assumed Wu Rendi had arrived. Zhang Zhiyan immediately calmed down and sat back. Both Sun Desheng and Huang Ran stood up to welcome him.

But when the door opened—it was Shen La, with his girlfriend Zhao Qing.

After a few polite exchanges, Shen La said, “We were originally going out for dinner. Since Director Wu invited everyone, I brought her along to join.”

Soon the room became more balanced, and arguments subsided into minor verbal sparring.

Just as they were chatting, the door opened again.

A white-haired man finally arrived.

Everyone in the room—except Car Qianzi—stood up to greet him.

Wu Rendi stepped in and said to Shao Yiyi, “You told me to turn left at the intersection and keep going straight, right?”

Shao Yiyi froze, then nodded. “Yes… I said left. Did you get lost, Uncle Wu? That’s my fault—I shouldn’t have just said left or right. I should’ve said: turn when you see the XX Bank.”

Wu Rendi replied calmly, “It’s fine. Left and right I can still manage.”

He glanced around and asked, “Have you ordered the food yet? Sun Desheng, you’ll be paying tonight.”
