Bureau of Paranormal Investigation: The Final Chapter 6 min read 164 of 188 3

A phone call from Director Ren Rong brought Sun Desheng and the others back to the Bureau of Investigation.

As they stepped into the courtyard outside the main gate, they immediately noticed unfamiliar faces gathered together. Several division chiefs and their investigators were undergoing searches conducted by these outsiders.

At the gate stood the newly appointed bureau director Ren Rong, as well as Yang Shuji, still stuck in a wheelchair. The two were arguing with a senior official from the ministry.

Seeing Sun Desheng and the others arrive, Hao Wenming—who had already finished his search—walked over.

Sun Desheng asked,

“Chief Hao, what’s going on inside? Who are these people? They’ve got some nerve causing trouble in our territory.”

Hao Wenming glanced at him and said,

“Big Sun, these bastards are here to shit on your neck. I’m telling you, ever since Director Gao Liang’s era, this is the first time I’ve ever been forced to submit to a body search in the Bureau of Investigation.”

“Those six intruders from yesterday, and the two trash you brought in later—they all mysteriously died this morning.”

“After Old Yang reported it upward, the ministry immediately sent people to kick us all out. They’re saying our people took money and silenced them.”

He pointed toward the building.

“They’re still searching the entire bureau. I heard after they finish here, they’re going to search our homes too.”

Before he could finish, the head of the search team approached.

He pointed at Sun Desheng and the others.

“Are you from the Bureau of Investigation too? Come over and register your names and positions, then submit to inspection. Hey, you there—get over here and be searched.”

As he spoke, the investigators being searched nearby all showed gleeful, malicious smiles.

Someone even fanned the flames:

“I want to report something! That fat guy over there is the most suspicious. He used to be a minor leader here, but was removed a few years ago for misconduct. He probably came back for revenge—go arrest him first, you’ll definitely get results!”

Hearing this, the new officials began moving toward Sun Desheng’s group.

At this moment, Che Qianzi had already been ready to rush in—his “mad dog” temper flaring—but instead he was busy taking off his clothes and removing his watch.

Those tens of thousands worth of items had only been worn for a day—he couldn’t let them get damaged.

Just as he was about to even take off his pants, Director Ren Rong noticed them.

He immediately shouted,

“Director Liu! What are you trying to do?! Searching my people at the gate—and now you want to touch Director Sun as well? The case hasn’t even been clarified yet, and you’re already accusing the Bureau of Investigation internally?”

A senior ministry leader also stepped in to stop the search chief.

“You’re just conducting an inspection—don’t harass others. Old Liu, pay attention to your methods… Comrade Desheng, you don’t need to pay attention to them. Director Liu was just transferred from a provincial department; he doesn’t know you yet.”

Sun Desheng smiled.

“Don’t say that. Everyone else is being searched, so if I act special, that wouldn’t be appropriate. And besides—if nothing is found in the end, who knows whether the blame will be dumped on my head?”

With that, he chuckled and walked straight to the back of the line, joining the others to be searched.

Everyone had expected him to cause a scene—but instead, he voluntarily lined up.

This left Director Liu, in charge of the search, completely embarrassed. He looked at Sun Desheng, then at the higher-ups, unsure how to proceed.

“This is nonsense…” Ren Rong said as he quickly walked down the steps.

He grabbed Sun Desheng and pulled him toward the gate.

“As for the cause of death—unknown. Time of death—unknown. Nothing has been investigated, and now we’re already searching our own people? What kind of place is the Bureau of Investigation?”

“If this sets a precedent, in the future everyone will have to watch faces just to do their job. What’s the point of working then?”

In just one night, Ren Rong seemed like a completely different person—his attitude and authority now fully aligned with the Bureau’s stance.

Returning to the senior official, Ren Rong said,

“Sir, how about this: I’ll go downstairs and let them search me personally. The upstairs offices aren’t locked—Director Liu can send his people up to inspect. After that, I’ll personally inspect Director Liu’s team.”

“Yesterday I submitted the report about the suspects who broke into the Bureau. Who knows? Maybe the problem started on their side.”

The senior leader frowned.

“Is that really the case?”

Before he could continue, Sun Desheng spoke first.

“Then go ahead and investigate. But if you’re going to do this, you might as well shut down the Bureau entirely.”

He chuckled.

“Ever since Director Gao Liang founded the Bureau of Investigation, this is the first time anyone has been searched at the front gate. Luckily I’m not the director anymore—otherwise I couldn’t afford the embarrassment.”

“Old Ren, my film company still needs a vice president. Want to come join?”

“Enough.”

The senior official sighed and said to Director Liu:

“Withdraw your team. Have everyone sign confidentiality agreements afterward. Anything seen or heard inside the Bureau is not to be disclosed.”

“If today’s events leak out, submit your resignation yourself.”

Director Liu froze for a moment, then quickly gathered his people and left in disgrace.

Meanwhile, Che Qianzi muttered to Xiao Yifeng while putting his clothes back on:

“Old Xiao, I almost went in on them. If it weren’t for this expensive outfit, I’d have already handled them myself…”

After the farce ended, Ren Rong led the senior official, Sun Desheng, and the division chiefs to a small conference room.

On the way, Hao Wenming briefly explained the deaths.

In the morning, Division Five had removed Du Qian’s body from formalin for autopsy.

During the procedure, the forensic examiner had just begun when the six armed intruders being held downstairs suddenly went insane. They all slammed their heads into the wall at the same time, turning their skulls into a pulp.

Immediately afterward, the brother-sister couple also began screaming hysterically, as if they had seen something terrifying, begging to be released.

At that time, guards were busy dealing with the six deaths and failed to monitor them closely.

By the time they realized something was wrong, the couple had already died of fright.

Both died with expressions of extreme terror, as if they had seen ghosts in broad daylight.

All interrogation rooms were equipped with surveillance cameras—but replaying the footage showed nothing unusual at all.

The Bureau of Investigation was supposed to handle extraordinary cases—but unexpectedly, this time the case itself had become centered inside the Bureau.

After Hao Wenming finished speaking, everyone entered the meeting room.

The senior official glanced at the listless division chiefs, the director, the secretary, and Sun Desheng’s group, then cleared his throat.

“Earlier, there were indeed some improper actions toward the Bureau’s comrades. However, the intention was good—to clear everyone’s suspicion.”

“I did not fully consider everyone’s feelings. That is my oversight as a minister.”

“This incident occurred within the Bureau of Investigation. As an outsider, I will not comment further. You should handle it yourselves. I will wait here for the final report.”

“Director Ren, is that acceptable?”

Although he addressed Ren Rong, his gaze briefly shifted toward Sun Desheng.

Ren Rong understood immediately.

“Sir,” he said, “there is something I haven’t yet reported.”

“Comrade Sun Desheng has decided to return and continue serving as Deputy Director of the Bureau of Investigation, responsible for daily operations.”
