Che Qianzi couldn’t stand it anymore after hearing those words from Ren Rong.

The young Taoist crossed his legs and said:

“When did you two get so close you’re practically wearing the same pants? Wasn’t it just yesterday that one of you wanted the other to die in the Yian Building, and the other wanted him scared to death by ghosts? Why don’t you just become sworn brothers? Add in that Yang Shuji while you’re at it…”

Ren Rong’s face turned slightly red after being mocked.

He quickly found an excuse to step away and stood up, addressing the Second Division investigators:

“Has the entire hospital been sealed off? Where is the surveillance footage we collected?”

As he spoke, he walked toward the director’s office.

Seeing Ren Rong retreat, Che Qianzi still wasn’t done.

“Fatty, did you eat something dirty this morning? How did you suddenly become a different person in just a short while? You got possessed or something? What did I drink the first time I went to your house?”

“Enough trouble…”

Sun Desheng sighed helplessly, then casually draped an arm over Che Qianzi’s shoulder and lowered his voice:

“Brother, I only just figured it out. Old Ren is basically a lightning rod sent by heaven to take the hits for me. With such a perfect lightning rod, why would I refuse it?

Think about it—his first day here was the Yian Building incident. Then he got targeted by ghosts himself. Both cases were tightly planned—if I were in his place, I couldn’t handle either of them.

When someone is already taking the blows for you, why should I rush forward? Right, La Zi?”

Shen La, sitting on the other side, smiled faintly.

“Big Sun, isn’t that a bit exaggerated? Even Director Wu couldn’t handle it?”

“What if Director Wu simply doesn’t intervene at all?”

Sun Desheng gave a bitter smile.

“Both incidents were calculated with his absence in mind. The Yian Building case assumed I wouldn’t call him in. As for Old Ren’s case, Director Wu wasn’t even in the country from the start.

Heaven has treated me well. Two black pots dropped from the sky—and neither landed on me.”

Shen La thought it over carefully.

It did match what Sun Desheng said. Even the airport incident before had been a huge blow. If something like that happened two more times, Sun Desheng would probably lose all confidence in himself.

In that sense, it really did feel like fate had conveniently sent Ren Rong to absorb the pressure.

Shen La didn’t continue the topic and instead asked:

“Big Sun, so the mastermind behind all this—did they just give up? They were so close earlier…”

“They even scared my Yiyi just now.”

Sun Desheng smiled strangely.

“They know who backs Yiyi. They’ve already crossed a red line. If they go any further, once Director Wu comes back, they’ll be dead for sure.

Old Ren got lucky—thanks to my Yiyi.

The ‘good thing’ I prepared for him… looks like it won’t be needed anymore.”

At the same time, across two streets from the hospital, inside a private room of a restaurant:

A middle-aged man with graying hair looked at a woman whose eyes were red.

“I’ve already made myself clear. I’ll return your money—double. This situation has already gotten out of control. If we continue, I’ll be dragged in too. Not just me—you as well.”

The woman’s eyes were filled with tears, but her tone was firm.

“You gave your guarantee when you took the money.

I need revenge for my three younger brothers. If you take the money, you finish the job. I don’t care about this Wu Rendi or whatever you call him.

Money I’ve paid will never be taken back.”

The man was already operating his mobile banking app.

When she finished speaking, he turned the screen toward her:

“Ten million—returned to you in double.

When I found out Ren Rong had gone to the Civil Affairs Bureau, I should’ve returned it earlier. Unfortunately… I got greedy.”

He put his phone away and stood up, heading for the door.

The woman suddenly shouted:

“You dare leave?! If you walk out of here, I’ll send your information to Wu Rendi! You almost killed his child earlier!

I’ll raise the price—one hundred million! I’ll give you one hundred million to finish off Ren Rong!”

The man stopped at the doorway.

After a moment of silence, he turned back.

“I never said I don’t kill women.”

He closed the door again.

After meeting Ren Rong and handing over the director position discussions, Sun Desheng returned home with Shen La and Che Qianzi.

When he saw that his wife Shao Yiyi and his daughter were both safe, he finally relaxed.

After asking about what happened, Shao Yiyi said:

“It was all thanks to Tu An. When the oxygen tank exploded, he used his body to shield me. Otherwise, even if I didn’t die, I would’ve been disfigured.

After sending me back, he went downstairs.”

“You really need to thank him properly.”

Sun Desheng chuckled.

“No cooking tonight. I’ll spend some money—we’ll take you, the kids, my two brothers, and Tu An out to eat. My treat.”

After changing clothes, Shao Yiyi took their daughter downstairs with Shen La and Che Qianzi to wait in the parking lot.

Sun Desheng still had a business van there—just enough seats for everyone.

Sun Desheng knocked on Tu An’s door himself.

“Old Tu, today you saved my whole family. I have to treat you to a proper thank-you dinner. No excuses—even if you’re in seclusion or fasting, you’re coming. I’m representing Director Wu here.”

Tu An shook his head.

“Forget it. I’m relieved you’re back. Shen La won’t let Yiyi suffer any loss either. I won’t go. I’ll just wait for Director Wu to return—then my job is done.”

“You’re not giving Director Wu face?”

Sun Desheng grinned.

“Then let’s upgrade it—how about someone with even more face? What about Kong Dalong?”

At that name, Sun Desheng’s smile widened.

“It’s been only a few days—you already forgot? You literally met him recently. You even discussed how to deal with the people in Yian Building together.”

Hearing “Kong Dalong,” Tu An’s facial muscles twitched.

He sighed helplessly.

“You didn’t need to flatter me like that. The Yian Building incident was entirely his planning.

Alright, where are we eating? I don’t eat raw fish.”

Seeing Tu An actually agree, even Shen La was surprised.

Old Tu was usually completely detached from worldly affairs—this was the first time he was going out for a meal.

Sun Desheng personally drove, smiling as he headed toward the seafood restaurant.

While driving, he said:

“I’ll have to toast you properly tonight on behalf of Director Wu.

Also, Old Tu… since you’re alone anyway, why don’t I introduce you to someone? Try settling down—maybe even have a big fat son someday.”

Tu An glanced at him helplessly.

“You should just leave me here instead. What wife? What children?

If I really had a family… I’d eventually send my wife away, then my children, then my grandchildren.

You’re not immortal—you don’t understand the suffering of immortality.”
