After the call connected, a different voice came through.

“Director Sun Desheng, right? I apologize for involving your family. This was my oversight. To express my apology, I’ve already called off the operation against Director Ren. I also have a small token of sincerity for you—you’ll receive it shortly.”

The voice had been electronically altered. Sun Desheng could only tell it was male, but not its age or tone.

Sun Fatty smiled faintly.

“Since you’ve already withdrawn, why not just surrender while you’re at it? At least you’d earn yourself a better attitude. Otherwise, if I catch you, that’s a different matter entirely.

Not bad though—controlling spirits and assassinating people… interesting skill. Are you registered with ‘Night Shadow’? You’d probably rank in the top five, right?”

A soft laugh came from the other end.

“Director Sun, no need to probe me. Lin Huaibu of Night Shadow has an agreement with you—they don’t interfere in domestic matters.

You’re angry right now, so anything I say won’t matter. After you see my ‘gift,’ you’ll naturally believe me.

You’re a busy man, so I won’t disturb you further.”

Then the call was abruptly cut.

Sun Desheng looked at the call log and thought for a moment.

He then instructed Yang Xiao and the Hao brothers to escort the He siblings to the Civil Affairs Bureau for interrogation, while Shen La and Che Qianzi continued into the hospital.

Before they even entered, Xiong Wanyi from the Second Division came out with several investigators.

He approached Sun Desheng and lowered his voice:

“Fatty, be honest with me. That whole big scene just now—was that arranged by you? That was way too much. It almost hurt your wife… There are plenty of ways to move Old Ren. Why go through all that trouble?”

“Old Xiong, trying to get information out of me?”

Sun Desheng smiled.

“Enough nonsense. How’s Old Ren doing? Didn’t scare himself into peeing his pants, did he?”

“Don’t even mention it. He locked himself in the director’s office upstairs writing a transfer application.”

Xiong Wanyi sighed as he walked with them into the hospital.

“You have no idea—top leaders from the ministry and several vice ministers called him one after another and cursed him out. He’s only been in the position a few days. First the Yian Building incident, now this hospital in the city center.

And just now, when those corpses started causing trouble, there were hundreds of patients around. Someone even filmed it and uploaded it online.

Since the Civil Affairs Bureau was established, we’ve never been this exposed before. My cousin’s husband’s sister’s aunt’s brother-in-law even called me saying he saw me on the internet fighting zombies…”

“Old Ren was getting scolded on the phone just now?” Sun Desheng interrupted with a smile.

“Was it his mobile or the landline?”

“Mobile. He said the landline ran out of power.”

Xiong Wanyi still didn’t understand why Sun Desheng was asking.

Just then, he added:

“TV stations and police also arrived asking what happened. I followed your usual explanation—said it was a group of fake zombies causing medical chaos. But the video’s already online. Not sure if we can cover it up this time.

Take this elevator. The director’s office is on the 11th floor.”

They didn’t even need to go to the office.

As soon as the elevator doors opened, they saw Director Ren Rong looking exhausted and worried, waiting for them.

He personally came out to greet them.

Seeing them, he sighed:

“Desheng… I’ve made up my mind. The Civil Affairs Bureau director position should still be yours—”

Before he could finish, Sun Desheng cut him off:

“Director Ren, my phone’s out of battery. I need to let my wife and kid know I’m safe. Can I borrow your phone?”

Ren Rong froze.

He didn’t expect that request.

Still, he took out his phone, unlocked it, and handed it over.

Sun Desheng opened the call log in front of him.

The last number dialed—was his own.

The time: just a few minutes ago.

He turned the screen toward Ren Rong.

“Director Ren. Four minutes ago—where was your phone?”

Ren Rong immediately understood what he meant.

He turned sharply to the Second Division staff:

“Seal the hospital immediately! Pull all surveillance footage outside the director’s office! He was still in the hospital within the last four minutes!”

But Sun Desheng didn’t pay attention.

He sat down calmly on a chair near the elevator with Shen La and Che Qianzi.

Watching the busy Ren Rong, he said:

“Interesting. That guy clearly had the chance to kill Old Ren face-to-face—but instead he just used his phone to call me.

During that call, he could’ve killed Old Ren ten times over.”

Shen La nodded.

“Big Sun, this one’s a real expert. Not weaker than the guy from Room 808 in the Yian Building. You can’t be careless.”

Che Qianzi added:

“La Zi’s right. Fatty, you’ve been getting led around by the nose lately. Don’t get used to it. Everyone says how amazing you used to be—why are you getting suppressed like this now? Even Yang Xiao gets flipped over sometimes, and now you’re almost the same. That won’t do—you need to stand up properly.”

“If it weren’t for us being brothers,” Sun Desheng grinned, “I’d flip you instead.”

He glanced at the frantic Ren Rong.

“Old Ren is panicking. Four minutes ago—if that guy had any ability, he’d already be out of Beijing.

Looks like he really did want to make peace. Too bad… he’s late.”

After finishing his work, Ren Rong sat down beside Sun Desheng, sighing heavily.

“Desheng… I admit defeat this time. I’ve been in the police system since I was twenty-one, and this is the first time I’ve been this embarrassed.

I’ve decided—I’m not cut out for this Civil Affairs Bureau director role. I’ve already applied for a transfer back to the ministry. I’ll just wait for retirement.

But I need to see this through. I have to catch this person before I leave.”

“Old Ren, you can’t leave. The Civil Affairs Bureau still needs you.”

Sun Desheng smiled.

“I’ve already thought it through—I’ll come back as deputy director.

Before I went to the US, I was already deputy director anyway. Director was always held concurrently by Yang Shuji.

The three of us working together—that works pretty well.”

Ren Rong couldn’t believe his ears.

He had originally come to replace Sun Desheng.

The Civil Affairs Bureau had always been tightly controlled—outsiders couldn’t get in. This was the first real chance they had, and he had been assigned to take over.

But on his first day, the Yian Building incident happened. And it was still Sun Desheng who solved it.

Then came the ghost assassination case. Again, it was Sun Desheng’s people who resolved it.

Now the hospital incident had gone viral online, showing him running from corpses—his identity would be exposed sooner or later. The higher-ups had already cursed him out. He had truly embarrassed the entire system.

He had come planning to leave in disgrace.

Yet now, Sun Desheng was telling him he would step down and return as deputy director.

As if reading his shock, Sun Desheng chuckled again:

“Old Ren, I’ve thought a lot these past few days. The Civil Affairs Bureau suits me better.

I’ll handle field work. Yang Shuji handles administration. As for pressure from above…”

At that moment, there was nothing left to say.

Ren Rong suddenly grabbed his hand:

“If there’s pressure, I’ll take it for you.

Desheng—Big Sun—you can rest easy.

I’ll stand above you. If the sky falls, I’ll be the first one crushed.”
