Yang Xiao’s methods were still quite effective. In less than ten minutes, he appeared in the ward.

After seeing Sun Desheng, the white-haired, baby-faced man said, “What’s going on? I heard from those little ghosts that another spirit showed up? And it tried to kill Old Ren? Let me be clear first—this has nothing to do with me.”

“No one said it does,” Sun Desheng replied with a grin. “Old Yang, you don’t exactly have a personal grudge with Director Ren.”

He briefly explained what had happened in the morgue. After finishing, he handed over a piece of paper with a drawn talisman and said, “This was found on that spirit by Li Zi. You explain it yourself.”

Shen La nodded. “Yeah, this was inside the ghost’s body. I can’t draw it exactly, but that’s the general idea. At first I thought it might be your work, Old Yang. After all, when it comes to manipulating ghosts and spirits, you’re one of the best in the world.”

“No need to flatter me. I know my own limits. I’d be satisfied just making the top five,” Yang Xiao said. As he studied the talisman, he eventually shook his head.

Then he took out a water brush filled with cinnabar ink and, right there on the ICU wall, swiftly drew another talisman.

Shen La immediately said, “Yes! That’s it—exactly the same as what I saw.”

Hearing this, Yang Xiao’s brow furrowed instead.

Seeing Sun Desheng and Che Qianzi both confused, he pointed at the talisman and explained, “This is strange. This is my self-created corpse-control curse. Since I created it, I’ve never used it in front of anyone else.”

He paused, then continued, “There’s no way. No one else should know this technique except me.”

Shen La asked, “Think carefully. Weren’t you once the leader of the Ghost Dao Sect? Did you pass it to a deputy or disciple?”

“No,” Yang Xiao shook his head. “I created this after leaving the Ghost Dao Sect. I never wrote it down, never demonstrated it to anyone.”

He exhaled deeply. “Tell me again—how did that spirit self-destruct in the end?”

Shen La repeated the details.

After listening, Yang Xiao’s expression grew even more serious.

He lowered his head in thought for a long moment before saying, “The talisman is mine… but I didn’t cast it.”

He looked genuinely puzzled. “I really don’t understand. I’ve never shown this to anyone.”

Sun Desheng glanced at him and said with a smile, “Old Yang, listen to yourself. I might not trust anyone else, but I trust you. No matter who did it or how they got hold of your technique, we’ll find out sooner or later.”

He continued, “It’s clearly aimed at Director Ren. Catching the mastermind won’t be hard.”

Before Shen La and Yang Xiao could fully process that, Che Qianzi spoke up.

“Fatty, you’re planning to sell off Director Ren as bait, aren’t you?”

Sun Desheng looked at him. “Watch your mouth. I never said it was unethical.”

Che Qianzi shrugged. “Didn’t say it was unethical either.”

At that moment, Shen La’s phone rang.

He glanced at the caller ID and handed it directly to Sun Desheng. “It’s Ren Rong. 100% looking for you.”

Sun Desheng took it with a grin. “This is Sun Desheng, not Shen La—Director Ren, you—”

He suddenly paused, his expression sharpening. “When did it happen? Besides this informant, were there others? How are the rest of the task force members?”

He switched on speaker mode.

Ren Rong’s trembling voice came through the phone:

“I just called them one by one. Everyone else is fine. Even the armed police commander in charge of the arrest confirmed it. Only me and that dead informant were affected. I already told them to stay alert and report anything unusual. I’ll send people from the bureau to protect them—wait, I have another call coming in, I have to hang up.”

The call ended abruptly.

Sun Desheng returned the phone and said, “Just now, at the same time Ren Rong got into trouble, the informant from the old case died in prison.”

“Cause of death: sudden madness. He tried to break out in plain sight. The guards shot him dead.”

“Seven-point-six-two-millimeter rifle rounds—eleven shots before he finally died.”

Shen La’s eyes widened. “Eleven shots? That’s impossible. Even a trained body couldn’t take that many—it would’ve been blown apart.”

Sun Desheng replied calmly, “According to Ren Rong, the informant first rammed the electric fence. Even after being electrocuted, he kept going. The guards followed protocol, fired warning shots, then shot to kill. He took eleven rounds before dying.”

He chuckled faintly. “Hear that? Ren Rong’s voice was shaking. Until this is resolved, he won’t dare go home.”

Seeing there was nothing left for him, Yang Xiao turned and left to carry out orders from Wu Rengui.

After he left, Che Qianzi felt exhausted and went back to his bed to sleep.

He slept until late night.

Then suddenly, he heard a voice calling him:

“Che Qianzi… wake up… I came to see you… wake up… look at me…”

The voice sounded familiar.

Too familiar.

He opened his eyes immediately.

A blood-covered figure stood by his bedside.

It was Kong Dalong.

His entire body was drenched in blood and tears, staring straight at him.
