When they found Director Ren, he had locked himself inside a refrigerated storage unit in the morgue. From inside, he kept kicking and shouting at the top of his lungs:

“Hallucination! It’s all hallucinations… I’ve seen this kind of thing plenty of times! I’m not afraid of anything! Bring Sun Desheng here! Don’t try this on me!”

Director Ren himself was fine, but the old man guarding the morgue was terrified out of his wits. The old caretaker collapsed on the ground trembling. A passing doctor found him, pinched his nose, and forced him to take a fast-acting stabilizer before sending him to the emergency room next to Sun Desheng’s ward.

The commotion shook half the hospital. Even the bolder staff came down to watch the spectacle.

Hearing someone yelling inside a cold storage drawer, even the bravest onlookers were scared stiff. A few of them were about to call the police.

At that moment, Sun Desheng arrived at the morgue holding Chu Qianzi, escorted by Shen La.

“Excuse me, excuse me… no need to call the police. The person inside is my cousin. He ate the wrong medicine as a child and damaged his brain. Director Ren, come out. It’s me, Sun Desheng…”

Shen La then turned and closed the morgue door.

“Boss, it’s useless,” he said. “Ren Rong has been hit by Old Yang’s technique. He can’t hear anything right now.”

As he spoke, Shen La walked up to the freezer drawer, drew his short sword, and tapped the door with the hilt.

“Enough. Stop making me waste words. Release the person inside, or I’ll go find Yang Xiao myself.”

Before Shen La could finish, several vague shadowy figures drifted out from nearby freezer drawers. One tall figure quickly explained:

“You’ve misunderstood. We were summoned by Master Yang to deal with the person inside. But before we could act, other spirits latched onto him. That thing is extremely vicious—it’s determined to kill Director Ren.”

“An enemy ghost targeting Director Ren?” Sun Desheng was startled. “Wait—this isn’t something Yang Xiao summoned? So it came for Ren Rong specifically? Or did he just run into it by bad luck?”

The shadow respectfully replied:

“It seems that spirit has a grudge against him. It rushed in immediately and latched onto him. But that man is extremely tough—he only panicked at first and shouted a bit. Then he started yelling and swearing nonstop. As they say, evil fears the bold. His energy only burned brighter, and the ghost couldn’t suppress him. In the end, it dragged him into the freezer—probably trying to extinguish his ‘three fires’ first before finishing him off.”

At that moment, Director Ren inside the freezer was still cursing loudly:

“Sun Desheng! What did I ever do to you?! Did I throw your kid into a well?! You’re messing with me like this?! Just wait! This isn’t over! If you don’t kill me today, I’ll come back and settle this with you myself! I’ll die with you!”

“La Zi, I’m not taking this blame,” Sun Desheng said helplessly. “See? Someone else is messing with Old Ren.”

Shen La no longer hesitated. He grabbed the freezer handle and yanked hard—the entire drawer was pulled out.

Inside, Director Ren was curled up, his body already frost-covered. A humanoid black shadow was clinging to him, one of its arms shoved into his mouth, as if trying to crawl entirely inside him.

Yet Ren Rong seemed completely unaware.

He was still staring blankly upward, cursing:

“Sun Desheng! Either kill me outright… don’t leave me breathing! Otherwise, when I recover, I’ll personally shoot you!”

“Or how about we just leave?” Sun Desheng said, watching him. “Pretend nothing happened. Let’s go eat hotpot. I know a place—clear broth soup, salt-dipped meat, amazing.”

Just as he spoke, Shen La grabbed the shadow’s hair and yanked upward violently.

The moment it was pulled free, Director Ren suddenly let out a roar:

“Ah—!”

He scrambled out of the freezer, gasping in terror. The instant he saw Sun Desheng, his expression twisted with rage.

“You surnamed Sun! You’re not human! If you can’t beat me openly, you resort to dirty tricks! This is a life-or-death feud—one of us will die!”

Before he could finish, a weakened Chu Qianzi suddenly rushed forward and kicked him in the lower abdomen, then slapped him across the face, swelling his cheek instantly.

“Calm down! Damn it, calm down!” Chu Qianzi pointed at the black shadow in Shen La’s hand.

“Baby, look carefully—this thing is the one trying to kill you, not our boss. If he really wanted you dead, you’d have been finished back at the building. Do you two know each other?”

Shen La touched Director Ren’s eyelid. Ren Rong suddenly saw the struggling shadow in Shen La’s hand—and his face turned pale as he staggered backward.

“You… you were already dead… You’re not human!”

Seeing that Ren Rong actually recognized the spirit, Sun Desheng raised an eyebrow and walked over.

“La Zi, since they know each other, this is easy. Let’s go. Let them talk it out. Looks like it’s just a misunderstanding. They’re basically old acquaintances.”

“Don’t leave!” Ren Rong rushed forward and blocked them.

Pointing at the shadow, he said:

“This is Du Hai, a suspect I tracked down last year. He killed people and resisted arrest—I shot him dead! You can verify it: last year’s top ten major cases in the ministry, case 115, major murder and drug trafficking case…”

Before he finished, Shen La suddenly said:

“Boss, something’s wrong with this spirit. There are talismans inside it—back up!”

The black shadow suddenly began to swell rapidly. Before anyone could react, it exploded into dust and vanished into the air.

No one expected that outcome.

They thought it was going to self-detonate, but instead it simply destroyed itself.

Sun Desheng glanced at Shen La’s empty hand and shook his head.

“Too hot-tempered…”

He looked at Director Ren.

“Old Ren, are you coming with us, or staying here a bit longer to cool off?”
