Che Qianzi had been dealing with ghosts and evil spirits since childhood, but the shadow in front of him was something he couldn’t recognize.
It had no ghostly aura, nor did it resemble any of the “spirit familiars” like foxes, weasels, white spirits, snakes, or hedgehogs. It was just a vague humanoid shadow, faintly carrying a trace of evil energy.
But recognition aside, Che Qianzi had been dealing with things like this since he was six years old. He had plenty of experience.
After a brief moment of panic, when the shadow lunged at him, he stepped back once—then suddenly charged forward instead.
He leapt up and slapped it hard across the face.
The shadow had never encountered such a “mad dog” before. It froze for a split second—and in that instant, Che Qianzi’s slap had already landed, knocking it straight back into the room.
But he wasn’t done.
Before the shadow could react, he rushed in after it, kicked it hard in the groin, grabbed its neck, and slapped it four more times in quick succession—left and right.
In his hands, the shadow had no ability to fight back at all. It trembled and wailed like a frog caught by a snake.
By this time, Sun Desheng and the others had already reached the doorway. Sun Desheng had originally intended to ask Yang Xiao to handle the situation, but after seeing this scene, Yang Xiao simply spread his hands and gave a wry smile.
“You might want to talk him down a bit. I’m not defending it, but this is a bit too much bullying… ‘it.’”
Sun Desheng chuckled.
“Brother, leave it alive. We might need answers from this thing. Just give it a couple of light hits. Old Yang, hurry up and pull my brother away—he’s worked up and can’t hear me.”
To the two tenants, however, the scene was completely different.
They couldn’t see the shadow at all. All they saw was the young “policeman” beating the air wildly.
Meanwhile, he was shouting and cursing:
“You still think you can mess with me?! Didn’t your mother tell you to stay away from your daddy when you left home?!”
“Still fighting back? Who taught you this bad habit?!”
To them, this was no police officer at all—just a violent lunatic.
And the rest of the group wasn’t much better.
Half of them had dyed white hair like punks, and there was a fat man smiling like a mentally unstable person, while the thin middle-aged man and a young guy were the only ones who looked somewhat normal.
The two tenants instinctively stepped back and tried to retreat into Room 911.
“Police!” Xiao Yifeng stepped in front of them and showed his badge.
“Besides the noise downstairs and the old policeman who told you not to leave earlier, did you notice anything else strange? Any sounds? Shadows? Or an uneasy feeling?”
“Does he count?” the man in shorts pointed at Che Qianzi, who was still being held back by Yang Xiao.
“Sir, I’ll say something extra… is that guy also a policeman? Shouldn’t you take him to see a doctor first?”
Xiao Yifeng coughed awkwardly.
“He has epilepsy. He just had an episode. Now answer the question—anything unusual or not?”
The tenants shook their heads.
To them, these “police officers” were even stranger than the gunfire downstairs.
Hao Wenming leaned over and whispered something to Sun Desheng.
Sun Desheng smiled, took their IDs, glanced at them, and handed them back.
“Alright, nothing to worry about. Just stay inside and don’t come out. No matter what happens outside, don’t open the door.”
The fat woman quickly tucked the IDs away.
“When will this be over? We still need to go out for dinner. Can you send us out? Or at least bring us food?”
Sun Desheng waved it off casually.
“That’s not possible. Just bear with it. Once we catch those escaped criminals, you can do whatever you want—go out, have kids, whatever. Just cooperate. We’re on duty.”
“Old Yang, pull my brother back. We’re going upstairs.”
At this point, Che Qianzi had already been pulled away by Yang Xiao. Yang held both him and the shadow apart, but Che Qianzi was still in fighting mode and slipped in a few more slaps whenever he got the chance.
To the tenants, it looked less like epilepsy—and more like insanity.
After returning to their room, the couple exchanged a glance.
The man in shorts lowered his voice:
“Did they notice anything? This place is just a rental unit. There shouldn’t be any flaws. We’ve concealed our aura completely, and that ‘wei’ earlier had nothing to do with us… Did we miss something? I’ve had a bad feeling all along.”
“Their attention isn’t on us,” the woman said calmly. “We’ll wait for the signal. Kill Kong Dalong quickly, and we can leave sooner.”
She lit a cigarette and took a drag.
“Also… it’s been a while since we heard gunfire downstairs. Did something happen to the Bureau? If they were wiped out, that would be troublesome. Sun Desheng would definitely come after us.”
Then she suddenly froze.
“The phone signal…”
She slapped herself.
“The phone signal was blocked long ago. So how did those two old ghosts call the police? If they trace it back, it’ll expose us. We need to go up—tell them the situation has changed. Sun Desheng has already brought the white-haired group upstairs.”
The man in shorts immediately reacted.
“Should we inform the others first?”
“Are you stupid? No one’s getting out now. Let those two old ghosts hold off Sun Desheng.”
The woman entered the bedroom, took a breath, and her body suddenly floated upward.
She pushed open a section of the ceiling, revealing a hidden passage.
She slipped through, exhaled, and stabilized herself.
“Come up quickly.”
The man followed, grabbing her arm and climbing up.
Together, they used the same method to move floor by floor until they reached the top—twelfth floor.
After confirming Sun Desheng and the others were still downstairs, they quickly moved toward the stairwell leading to the rooftop.
But before they could reach it, a door to Room 1201 opened.
A voice said coldly:
“Who allowed you to come up here? I already told Wei to pass the message—hold the Bureau members downstairs. Even if the sky falls, you were not supposed to come up.”
The woman wiped the sweat from her forehead.
“It’s urgent. We had no choice. Sun Desheng has seen through something. The Han brothers sent us up to assist you. We need to finish off Kong Dalong early. They’ll hold Sun Desheng downstairs.”
