After speaking, Sun Desheng ignored everyone else, grabbed Che Qianzi, and led several white-haired operatives up the stairs.
The people occupying the stairwell were soon taken away by Municipal Investigation Bureau investigators. Sun Fatty checked Hao Zhengyi’s condition and confirmed he was not seriously injured, then had Xiao Yifeng carry him down.
Tu An took the lead, clearing the way upward. The formations laid across the stairs meant nothing to him—he didn’t even bother carefully breaking them. He simply forced his way through with overwhelming technique, crushing each formation as they came.
When they reached the second floor, Shen La couldn’t help but ask:
“Big Saint, aren’t we checking this floor? Maybe the target is hiding here.”
Sun Fatty chuckled.
“La Zi, think about it—if someone wants to kill everyone, would they hide on a floor where they can escape immediately? If it were me, I’d stay higher up. First, I can lure everyone upward and deal with them in one go. Second, there’s no risk of people escaping too quickly.”
Che Qianzi suddenly interjected:
“Fatty, you’re not that person. At least dozens of people haven’t been killed yet, right? In the end, that Director Ren will probably take all the credit.”
Sun Desheng laughed.
“Brother, how do you know those dozens of people being captured wasn’t part of the plan? The principle of ‘when the rabbit dies, the hounds are cooked’—he understands it better than anyone. Leaving a few survivors is sometimes more useful than killing everyone.”
Before he finished, Tu An walking at the back suddenly spoke:
“Someone is hiding at the corner of the fourth floor… it’s Hao Wenming.”
Sun Desheng immediately stopped.
He was about to hide himself when Tu An added the second half:
“It’s him. He’s fine.”
Only then did Sun Fatty relax. With a mischievous grin, he tiptoed to the corner of the fourth floor and suddenly jumped out—
“Ahhh!”
Hao Wenming was startled badly.
“Big Saint! You scared me!”
Seeing it was Sun Desheng, he let out a bitter smile.
“How’s the situation downstairs? Did you see our boss? I heard people coming up just now—I thought it was those evil cultivators, I was ready to ambush them.”
“Boss is fine. I’m here, aren’t I?” Sun Fatty said smugly. “And didn’t you send Xiao Yifeng down?”
“Which Xiao Yifeng?” Hao Wenming frowned. “He’s still upstairs. The stairwell is full of formations—we broke them one by one, but he got trapped in a ‘Fear Binding Formation’ on the sixth floor. Luckily that formation only traps one person. That’s why I came down.”
Sun Desheng’s expression changed instantly.
“Tu An, stop the Xiao Yifeng downstairs. Don’t let him escape.”
Tu An immediately reacted and used his movement technique to chase after the “Xiao Yifeng” below.
Hao Wenming also realized something.
“So there are two Xiao Yifengs? Ever since entering this building, everything’s been strange. It feels like we’re being calculated step by step. Big Saint… this isn’t your doing, right? If it is, that’s a bit too wicked.”
Sun Desheng gave a rare wry smile.
“You don’t trust me? Since when have I ever schemed against you, Hao-head?”
“You’ve schemed against me plenty,” Hao Wenming replied flatly. “Ten years ago when you and Shen La first joined—did I ever get my share of that Moon-Embracing Jade Coffin’s night pearl?”
He waved his hand.
“Forget it. Stop talking nonsense. Hurry upstairs and get Xiao Yifeng out. There’s also a tough opponent inside. I and Xiao Yifeng both sensed it earlier. That guy seemed to be looking for someone and completely ignored us.”
“A tough opponent? Not Bi Yan, right?” Yang Xiao asked.
“The sissy Bi Yan?” Hao Wenming shook his head. “Not him. I know him. That guy carries a yin aura. This one is different—his strength is no weaker than Bi Yan’s. He almost killed me and Xiao Yifeng earlier. But once he realized we weren’t his target, he ignored us completely. No one on the blacklist has that kind of ability.”
“Whatever,” Sun Desheng said lazily. “Let’s go upstairs first and pull Xiao Yifeng out. Since things are already settled downstairs, we might as well finish the sweep and see what they’re really after.”
Knowing his elder brother was safe, Hao Wenming relaxed.
With almost all Division Six white-haired operatives now present, they had confidence. Whatever mastermind was behind this, they would dig him out sooner or later.
The group continued upward.
Sure enough, on the sixth-floor corner, they found Xiao Yifeng—disheveled and slightly insane, pacing in circles inside a two-square-meter corner.
He kept muttering:
“Prison entry twenty-one, left seven right one returns to eight… Prison entry twenty-two, left six right seventeen, release the tiger back into the mountain…”
He kept circling and chanting, completely unaware of the people approaching.
“He’s interesting,” Tu An remarked.
Before anyone else acted, Yang Xiao stepped forward and tripped him.
Before Xiao Yifeng could react, a bronze nail was already pressed against his neck.
“Tell me,” Yang Xiao said with a faint smile, “what does ‘prison entry eighty-one’ mean?”
Xiao Yifeng looked dazed.
“Prison entry eighty-one… left nine right five becomes emperor—Yang Xiao… when did you get here? What was I doing just now?”
“You were reciting a prison-breaking chant,” Yang Xiao said.
He smiled.
“Didn’t know you were a disciple of Longjia Sect. The ‘prison-entry escape technique’ is a lost art on the market. Didn’t expect you to know it. I underestimated you.”
Xiao Yifeng finally snapped back to reality.
After being pulled up, he gave a bitter laugh.
“I found this from an ancient incomplete manuscript. Unfortunately, passages 55, 59, and 72 are missing. I couldn’t break the formation, so I had to keep reciting it repeatedly to avoid being trapped.”
Che Qianzi suddenly chimed in:
“What are you all talking about? Prison-breaking chant? Isn’t that just that prison song? ‘Holding a steamed bun in my hands’ and all that?”
Yang Xiao, remembering past lessons from Che Qianzi, quickly explained:
“It’s a formation-breaking mantra created by a Southern Tang Daoist named He Liu. From one to eighty-one, if you recite it correctly, you can break almost any formation. Unfortunately, it became incomplete after his death.”
Che Qianzi frowned.
“If he died and it became incomplete, how do you know about it, Yang Xiao?”
Yang Xiao smiled slightly and pointed at himself.
“Because I saw it when he was still alive.”
