In the residential building opposite, the senior members of the Bureau of Special Investigations were already in a frantic rush.
A wall facing the front had been covered with photographs—each one matched a person from the blacklist who had appeared around Yongan Building. To obtain these photos, the Bureau had to put in considerable effort. Fortunately, after Liu Zhiyou’s earlier probing, those people had lowered their vigilance toward this side. Director Ren even had a fax machine sent over, which solved part of the problem.
“Confirmed now,” Director He Wenying said, pointing at the photo of the small shop owner on the wall. “The one holding things together downstairs in the convenience store is He Zhongluo. He’s the liaison for the first wave. So far, sixty-three people have gathered under him, but for some reason, they still haven’t made a move on Unit 808.”
He then pointed at two similar-looking men and continued, “He Huan and his nephew He Sai have already entered the building. Their exact location is unclear, but they should be near 808. He Sai is on the same level as He Zhongluo—cunning and unpredictable. Rumor has it he once saved He Zhongluo’s life, but the details are unknown.”
As he spoke, He Wenying sketched the rough layout of Yongan Building on the wall with a pencil.
“New intelligence just came in. The property management of Yongan Building was partly financed by the Shuangnan Group, which has ties with He Zhongluo. Most of the building staff now belong to people on the blacklist.”
“Outside, the convenience store, the stationery shop on the first floor, and the Beijing-style fast food restaurant across the street are all under He Zhongluo’s control. Since Liu Zhiyou can recognize people from the Bureau, we still can’t send anyone in for reconnaissance.”
“And that’s not the worst part—there are two more waves coming in…”
He paused, sighing softly.
“The first wave is Yu Meiren. He was already persuaded to leave by Section Two, but he pulled a trick at the airport and never boarded the plane. Now he’s in Beijing on his own, contacting other people along the way—currently twenty-two people under him.”
“The most troublesome is the third wave—Zhu Nan. Unlike Yu Meiren, he coordinated with dozens of people before entering Beijing. But once they arrived, they split up immediately, constantly changing vehicles to shake off our surveillance. Now they’re regrouping near Yongan Building.”
He drew circles around He Sai, He Zhongluo, Yu Meiren, and Zhu Nan on the photos.
“If we can take down these four leaders quickly, the rest are just small fry. The ones still on the way will likely turn back.”
After hearing this, Director Ren remained silent for a moment.
Then he stepped forward and looked at the photos one by one.
“Over a hundred people already on site…” he said slowly. “We need to adjust our strategy. Recall Sections Three and Four. Let Section Two continue persuading people to leave. We prepare for combat.”
He looked up.
“Director He, still no contact with Section Six?”
He Wenying gave a bitter smile. “Not only no contact… I just got word that Sun Desheng already bought plane tickets for all three white-haired members. They’re leaving in half an hour.”
Ren felt a curse rise in his chest but swallowed it.
So that bastard really ran off with his family.
He took a deep breath.
“Then we can’t stay passive anymore. We can’t just watch their numbers grow.”
He turned to the others.
“Director He, do you have He Zhongluo’s contact information? I’m calling him.”
Everyone looked at him in surprise.
Ren continued calmly, “We need to put pressure on them.”
He dialed the number and put it on speaker.
After a few rings, a deep voice came through:
“Is that Director Sun? I figured you’d call soon. Why the change of number?”
Ren replied, “You’ve misunderstood. I’m not Sun Desheng. I’m the new director of the Bureau of Special Investigations, Ren Rong. Director Sun has been promoted, and from now on, all affairs will be under my responsibility.”
He paused.
“Mr. He, are you still listening?”
He Zhongluo went silent for a moment.
“…The Bureau even changed leadership? Sun Desheng quit?”
After a pause, he said, “Is this some kind of trick by Director Sun? Please tell him—we’re not here to cause trouble. Once we finish our business, we’ll leave immediately. Not a single person will stay behind.”
Ren’s expression darkened slightly.
He had been completely dismissed.
He took a breath.
“Mr. He, this call is on behalf of Director Wu Rendi of Section Six. He told me to inform you that he will personally visit Yongan Building. You’d better prepare yourselves.”
The tone of the call immediately changed.
He Zhongluo hesitated.
“…No need to trouble Director Wu. We’re basically half from the same lineage. We’ll leave within two hours. We won’t cause him any trouble.”
Ren smiled coldly.
“Discuss that with Director Wu yourself.”
He ended the call.
After hanging up, Ren exhaled deeply and wiped the cold sweat from his forehead.
“…Did I overplay this?”
Meanwhile, in the convenience store downstairs, He Zhongluo stared blankly at the phone.
Then he looked up.
“…We’re done. Wu Rendi hung up on me.”
Yu Meiren immediately said, “Then we leave now!”
Before he could finish, Zhu Nan spoke.
“When will Wu arrive? Don’t wait anymore. We strike now. Wu Rendi isn’t the target—Kong Dalong in Room 808 is. Kill him, and we become the true orthodox lineage of the Daoists. Would Wu really make things difficult for fellow sect members?”
