The next morning, Gu Yihan pushed open the office door right on time. Inside, Sister Min and Sister Su were both staring at her in unison.
Gu Yihan walked to her desk, smiling at them. “Sister Min, Sister Su, why are you both looking at me like that?”
Sister Min looked at Gu Yihan with a complicated expression and asked, “Xiaohan, are you close with Secretary Jiang?”
Gu Yihan blinked in confusion at the two of them. “Not really. Why do you ask?”
Seeing both of them visibly relax, Sister Min said, “Secretary Jiang came to our office several times this morning, all asking for you.”
Gu Yihan figured they were probably asking about the translation instructions, so she didn’t think much of it and replied casually, “Oh.”
Sister Min and Sister Su got up and walked over to Gu Yihan, warning her, “You’d better keep your distance from that Secretary Jiang.”
Sister Su carefully chose her words and spoke to Gu Yihan tactfully, “I heard his family is well-off, so he’s very popular with the women in the textile factory.”
Gu Yihan looked at them, amused by their overly cautious behavior.
She chuckled. “What’s going on with you two? You do know I’m married, right?”
Seeing that Gu Yihan still had the mood to laugh, Sister Min suddenly raised her voice and said seriously, “Don’t take this lightly. Sister Su was being very subtle in what she said. Secretary Jiang is one of the most sought-after men in our factory. Many female staff and workers fight over him behind the scenes. Even though you’re married, they could still target you. What does that prove?”
Gu Yihan, now curious herself, asked, “Why?”
Sister Su covered her mouth to hide her laugh. Sister Min, being younger, wasn’t as composed as Sister Su.
Sister Min anxiously said, “Flies don’t bite a seamless egg. If Secretary Jiang hadn’t given any hints, how would others…?”
“What would they?” A cold male voice reached the ears of the three women.
Sister Su and Sister Min stiffened and turned to see Secretary Jiang standing at the doorway, though they hadn’t noticed him arrive.
They never expected that speaking ill of someone would get them caught red-handed.
With smiles, Sister Min and Sister Su returned to their desks, speaking in unison, “Nothing.”
Secretary Jiang cast a cold glance at them, then looked at Gu Yihan, who was trying not to laugh, and said in a cold tone, “Comrade Gu, come with me.”
Without waiting for her response, he walked out of the office.
Gu Yihan grabbed her bag and followed him to his office.
She placed the translated document on his desk. “I don’t know if it’s correct. You can have someone check it.”
She was worried that Secretary Jiang might later expect her to serve as a simultaneous English interpreter.
She reminded him, “I don’t speak English. I just have a good memory and learned a bit from my middle school Russian teacher.”
Gu Yihan really did have only test-oriented English from her previous life. Saying she learned a bit from a Russian teacher was also true—no one could check.
Secretary Jiang looked over the instructions. Although he didn’t know if the translation was accurate, the sentences were very coherent.
Seeing him nod as he reviewed the document, Gu Yihan said, “Since there’s nothing else, I’ll get back to work.”
Without waiting for a reply, she turned and hurried out the door.
Secretary Jiang looked up and saw her rushing off, full of amusement in his eyes.
Back in the office, Sister Su and Sister Min were waiting for her.
Sister Min, curious, asked, “What did Secretary Jiang want with you?”
Gu Yihan couldn’t help but laugh at their expressions.
After a while, she said, “This morning, I accidentally bumped into him while walking. He fell and landed on his backside, then asked me for a check-up fee.”
In her mind, she silently apologized: Sorry, Secretary Jiang, I let you take the fall first.
As expected, Sister Min and Sister Su looked at her in disbelief, scanning her up and down.
Sister Min blurted out, “Looks like Secretary Jiang is all show and no substance.”
Sister Su nodded in agreement. “He’s so frail that he couldn’t even handle you. I don’t know what those young girls see in him. Marrying him would mean living a lonely life, wouldn’t it?”
Gu Yihan: “…”
Why do these two always jump straight to this kind of joke?
The rest of the afternoon, Sister Min and Sister Su couldn’t stop talking about Secretary Jiang.
After work, at the military housing compound: Gu Yihan rode her bike up to the gate and heard Wen Juan calling her from afar.
Wen Juan ran up to her, hands on her knees, panting heavily. “Colonel Lu’s wife, Zhao Ju… wants to see you.”
Gu Yihan looked at her, puzzled. “Wants to see me?”
“Yes… Zhao Ju fell and is in bad shape, at the military hospital…”
Startled, Gu Yihan didn’t wait for Wen Juan to finish. She turned her bike around and sped straight to the military hospital.
