Kun City Train Station
Before the driver even brought the vehicle to a complete stop, Gu Yihan stood up and quickly carved a path through the crowded throng.
She darted off the train in a flash, jogging under a tree and taking deep breaths of the fresh air.
Xiao Wu, sitting in his seat, stared in disbelief at the retreating figure of Gu Yihan forcing her way through the crowd.
“Her speed… it’s almost as fast as during our training sessions.”
Gu Yihan stood beneath the tree for a moment, thinking: a light rain, two people taking a ride together, leaving without saying goodbye—wouldn’t do.
She noticed Xiao Wu disembarking at the very back of the crowd and called out, “Xiao Wu.”
After seeing him off, Gu Yihan headed toward the post office.
Kun City had stationed military personnel, so its population was larger than Jinyang City’s, and the post office frontage was correspondingly bigger.
The postal worker, knitting a sweater, looked up when someone entered. Glancing at Gu Yihan, she asked, “Miss, are you sending a telegram or mailing a letter?”
Gu Yihan didn’t pay attention to her tone. She placed five yuan and the receipt on the counter. “Money transfer.”
The postal worker set aside her knitting, took the money and receipt from Gu Yihan, and pulled out a remittance form from the drawer to fill it out.
Gu Yihan looked at the stamps behind the counter. She waited for the form to be completed, intending to ask something afterward.
Suddenly, a commotion erupted at the entrance: “Let me go! I don’t know you! I’m not your wife!”
A familiar cry reached Gu Yihan’s ears. That voice… it sounded so much like Li Yajing’s. But that couldn’t be right—she should still be in Jinyang City.
“Wife, you can’t divorce! Our son is still at home waiting!” a young man grabbed the woman’s arm.
“Are you crazy? I’m not your wife! You’re human traffickers!” The familiar, sharp voice trembled with fear.
Gu Yihan thought for a moment, then strode out of the post office, just in time to see a patchwork-clad young man and a stern-looking older woman dragging Li Yajing along.
They walked while speaking: “Aren’t you going to care for the child at home?”
Onlookers whispered and gestured to Li Yajing: “Every couple argues sometimes.”
“Getting a divorce over every little thing—that’s not what a proper woman would do.”
Gu Yihan carefully approached the three. Li Yajing’s eyes lit up upon seeing her.
Fearing Li Yajing might call her name, Gu Yihan shook her head slightly, signaling her to stay quiet.
Taking advantage of the two adults’ inattention, Gu Yihan grabbed Li Yajing’s arm and pulled her behind herself.
Her dark eyes locked onto them, and she shouted to the crowd: “Grab these two! They’re human traffickers!”
“You shameless woman! How dare you try to stir up trouble between us!”
The young man stepped forward aggressively, raising his hand as if to pull her hair.
Gu Yihan pushed Li Yajing behind her aside and clenched her fist, striking the man squarely in the chest.
“Agh!” The young man let out a scream, caught off guard, clutching his chest and bending over in pain, unable to stand.
The older woman rushed forward to support her son, crying and shouting: “It’s unfair! He’s been beaten to death! Someone help! They don’t want my daughter-in-law to go home!”
It took a moment for Li Yajing to react. She burst into tears, hugging Gu Yihan: “Xiaohan, they’re human traffickers! I don’t know them!”
Gu Yihan patted Li Yajing’s hand, glaring at the mother and son, raising her voice: “You dare to attempt to traffic military families? Bold, aren’t you?”
The crowd gasped: “Military families?”
Hearing this, the older woman and young man turned pale, looking for a chance to escape—but the crowd around them had grown too large.
Gu Yihan glanced around, then fixed her eyes on the mother and son again: “You’re covered in rags, but you think you can support a woman in proper clothes and shoes?”
The onlookers finally noticed that Li Yajing’s attire was expensive—far beyond what an ordinary family would buy.
It became clear: this mother and son were human traffickers. In this era, everyone detested traffickers.
A sharp-eyed woman in the crowd noticed the pair trying to flee and shouted: “Human traffickers! Don’t let them escape!”
Before they could run, the mother and son were caught by the crowd. Locals fetched a rope and tied them up tightly.
The curious onlookers joined in, escorting the pair to the police station.
Li Yajing clutched Gu Yihan’s hand tightly on the way, quietly asking in her ear: “How were you so strong just now? One punch and he couldn’t stand straight.”
Gu Yihan tensed briefly, then chuckled softly: “There was no time to think. I used all my strength. My arm feels weak now.”
Li Yajing asked casually, accepting the explanation without further thought.
A small hamster in the spatial pocket muttered: “If it weren’t for me, could you have been this strong?”
At the police station, Director Fu saw the large crowd and the tied-up mother and son. Gu Yihan stepped forward: “Officers, these two are human traffickers.”
“We’re not! Please let us go!” the young man wailed.
The older woman sobbed to Director Fu: “We were too poor to marry off my son properly. I just wanted her as a daughter-in-law, not to sell anyone!”
The young man cried profusely as well: “I fell in love at first sight! It’s true—we’re not traffickers. Our family has always been honest people!”
Before Director Fu could respond, a middle-aged woman from the crowd scolded them: “Hah! You just liked her because she’s pretty and wanted her as your wife? How shameless!”
“People like you make every parent afraid to let their daughters go out. Any son without a wife might just grab one from the street!”
Others joined in, laughing and mocking them: “Honest people, my foot! Isn’t this ridiculous?”
Director Fu’s head throbbed from the commotion. He shouted sternly: “Everyone shut up!”
Rubbing his temples, he turned to Officer Xiao Chen behind him: “Xiao Chen, take them inside to record their statements.”
After Gu Yihan and Li Yajing finished giving their statements, once they left the police station, Gu Yihan finally asked: “Why did you come to Kun City?”
Li Yajing, eyes red and swollen from crying, looked at her with a choked voice: “My parents kept setting up blind dates for me. I didn’t want to go, so I got upset and came out to look for my cousin.”
Gu Yihan: “…”
She was speechless. Truly, some people don’t know how good they have it.
She envied Li Yajing in a way—her parents treated her like a princess.
“Your parents wouldn’t harm you. The matches they set up are reliable,” Gu Yihan said with a long sigh.
Li Yajing couldn’t think that far. She grabbed Gu Yihan’s arm and looked seriously into her eyes: “Xiaohan, you don’t understand. These arranged marriages are like eating tomatoes with soy sauce. He doesn’t like me, and I don’t like him either.”
Gu Yihan was stunned. She had no words to respond.
