Before she knew it, it was time to get off work. After saying goodbye to Accountant Min, Gu Yihan headed straight to where her bicycle was parked.

Riding her bicycle, she felt in high spirits. The textile factory wasn’t very large, and the relationships among staff were simple.

Even though it was only her first day, the accounting department had few people, and fewer people meant fewer complications.

Gu Yihan could also sense that Accountant Min wasn’t a meddlesome person. She liked this kind of working environment.

Gu Yihan rode straight into the military housing compound. The soldiers on guard already recognized her, so she didn’t need to stop for registration.

“Screech…”

Startled by someone suddenly blocking her way, Gu Yihan instinctively grabbed the brake.

The bicycle screeched to a halt, the metal clanging sharply.

Though a faint smile lingered on her lips, her eyes were devoid of warmth.

She looked at the comrade who was blocking her. With her fair skin and military uniform, it was obvious she was a female soldier from the performing troupe.

Qi Yanran glanced at Gu Yihan with a sneer. “So you’re Gu Yihan. You don’t look all that impressive.”

After speaking, she circled Gu Yihan once and added, “Even if you marry Lu Huailin, in the end…”

“Now the people from the performing troupe are this blatant about ruining military marriages? I’d like to ask your troupe leaders—is this how you manage your female soldiers?” Gu Yihan interrupted coldly.

Qi Yanran’s friend, Du Xiao, who had been watching the scene, suddenly spoke up: “Yanran, the troupe leader wants you to rehearse the program.”

Then she stepped forward, tugging Qi Yanran along, and said to Gu Yihan, “Sister-in-law Gu, I apologize on Yanran’s behalf.”

Du Xiao feigned difficulty. “Yanran only came to Kun City because of Commander Lu. Hearing about his marriage unsettled her a bit.”

“Du Xiao, what are you saying—‘I came because of…’” Qi Yanran started to speak but was cut off as Du Xiao pulled her away.

Gu Yihan didn’t pay Qi Yanran any mind. In this era, military personnel valued their reputations highly if they wanted to rise in rank.

The military wives nearby, peeking curiously, noticed that Gu Yihan and Qi Yanran hadn’t started a fight.

One of them looked disappointed. “Why didn’t they fight? I wanted to see some excitement.”

The wife of Battalion Commander Zhang scolded them: “Why are you all crowding around? Gossiping all day won’t get you any food rations.”

“Go home and tidy up. Starting tonight, the two-month literacy classes begin.”

Upon hearing they had to study, the group of military wives groaned and complained loudly: “Can we skip it? It’s too hard—we can’t wrap our heads around it.”

The battalion commander’s wife sneered at them. “Go home and ask your men if your lack of education affects them.”

After saying this, she turned and left. She was frustrated—three women alone were enough drama, let alone all the wives in the compound.

When Gu Yihan got home, she saw that the lock on the door was open, meaning Lu Huailin had already returned. She pushed the door open and saw him assembling a chicken coop.

She parked her bicycle and asked, “Why are you home so early today?”

Lu Huailin placed the last plank, dusted his hands, and looked at Gu Yihan. “Wife, I have a mission tonight. I’ll be gone, probably for half a month.”

Gu Yihan gripped the bicycle tightly. She forced a smile and said, “Then I’ll cook first. You can eat before you leave.”

Lu Huailin strode over and hugged her. “Wife, don’t trouble yourself. I just wanted to see you before I leave.”

Gu Yihan broke free. “Just make some noodles. It’ll be quick, not troublesome.”

She rushed to the kitchen, using water from her space to cook the noodles. In her mind, she muttered: “System, do you have anything good for the body?”

The hamster in the space was about to reply that there wasn’t any.

Then Gu Yihan said, “I don’t believe there’s nothing. If you don’t give me something and Lu Huailin gets into trouble, I won’t be okay either.”

Although Gu Yihan didn’t know why the system had bonded to her, the fact it had appeared the last time she was in mortal danger proved it was tied to her fate.

The little hamster’s fur bristled. “You’re threatening me.”

Gu Yihan’s voice turned cold. “You used the energy in my space. Isn’t helping me your duty?”

The tiny hamster paced in the space. “I saved you.”

Gu Yihan scoffed. “If you hadn’t drained my space’s energy, I could have hidden in there and avoided danger entirely. I wouldn’t have suffered like this.”

“Ultimately, it’s still your fault that put me in danger, so…”

Before she could finish, a green glass bottle flew right in front of her. She caught it and asked, “What does this do?”

The hamster reverted to its mechanical voice. “Host, this potion enhances human abilities. It boosts Lu Huailin’s capabilities by twenty percent over his current level.”

“Why isn’t there any for me?” Gu Yihan looked at the green bottle in confusion.

The hamster was exasperated by her greed.

“It’s for warriors from our dimension. Ordinary people can’t gain anything from it.”

Without hesitation, Gu Yihan poured the potion into the noodles, stirred, then paused.

She finally remembered to ask the system: “Will the effect weaken?”

“No.” The hamster replied stubbornly.

Gu Yihan muttered softly, “Why does it feel like the system’s angry?”

She called to Lu Huailin, who was pouring water into the pot: “The noodles are ready. Wash your hands and eat.”

After finishing, Lu Huailin brought the bowl to the dining table. He took a bite and felt warmth in his chest.

He thought to himself, This is what it feels like to have a home. Even eating a simple bowl of noodles feels like happiness—it warms your heart.

“Commander, assembly!” Xiao Wu shouted at Lu Huailin from the doorway.

Lu Huailin quickly finished the noodles, leaving not even a drop of soup.

He strode to Gu Yihan, hugged her, and said, “Wife, wait at home for me. Don’t worry—I’ll return safely.”

Gu Yihan hugged him back, tears brimming, voice trembling, “Don’t get hurt. I’ll check when you return.”

Lu Huailin kissed her forehead, let go, and left without looking back.

Gu Yihan stared after him, unable to regain her composure.

“Xiao Han, still upset?” Aunt Chen leaned over the wall, watching her.

Gu Yihan immediately recognized her—she’d climbed the wall again.

She sighed. “Aunt Chen, you can just enter through my front gate. What you’re doing is too dangerous.”

Aunt Chen smiled. “You just got married. Commander Lu is on a mission, and you’re probably not used to it yet. Once you get used to them going on missions often, you won’t worry so much.”

She wanted to chat more but suddenly sniffed the air. “Oh no, my dish is burning.”

In an instant, Aunt Chen disappeared.
