On his way back, Lu Huailin happened to see Lin Yifei carefully supporting Qiao Shuhui as they walked.
Seeing Lu Huailin carrying things by himself, Lin Yifei blurted out, “Captain Lu, why are you alone? Where’s Xiaohan?”
The words had just left his mouth when Lin Yifei himself froze.
Qiao Shuhui also instinctively clutched Lin Yifei’s arm tightly.
Hearing Lin Yifei call his wife “Xiaohan,” Lu Huailin felt a pang of jealousy. He hadn’t even called her that so affectionately himself.
His face grew cold, expressionless, as he said, “Captain Lin, you’re not close with my wife. Calling her Xiaohan might not be appropriate.”
He glanced at Lin Yifei’s wife and saw her holding onto Lin Yifei’s arm tightly.
Lin Yifei collected his thoughts, smiled, and looked at Lu Huailin: “It’s just that my wife is pregnant and I was too happy to think carefully. I’ll be more careful next time.”
“Captain Lu, you’re not young anymore—hurry and have a child with your younger sister-in-law.”
Lu Huailin replied perfunctorily, “Then I wish you both a healthy baby.”
He said that, grabbed his things, and strode past them.
Qiao Shuhui and Lin Yifei walked side by side in silence, saying nothing the whole way.
At home
Qiao Shuhui, her face streaked with tears, looked into Lin Yifei’s eyes and asked, “Do you like Gu Yihan?”
Seeing her crying, Lin Yifei was about to ask what was wrong but was startled by her words. He quickly scolded, “Nonsense! How could I possibly like her?”
Seeing how heartbroken she was, Lin Yifei stepped forward and wiped Qiao Shuhui’s tears: “I only met Gu Yihan once before she came to the army. How could I possibly like her?”
Hearing this, Qiao Shuhui broke into a smile through her tears.
She threw herself into Lin Yifei’s arms: “I knew it! Yifei, you love me the most.”
Lin Yifei held her, gently stroking her back: “I even clashed with my family just to marry you. Doesn’t that prove my feelings for you?”
Qiao Shuhui buried her face in his chest, thinking: She definitely won’t let Lin Yifei go. Once we have a child, we’ll always be a family.
Elsewhere, Gu Yihan woke after dozing a while. She didn’t dare go back to sleep, worried that she might not sleep at night if she napped too long.
“My wife, open the door,” Lu Huailin called from outside.
Hearing him, Gu Yihan got out of bed, removed the latch, and opened the door.
As he walked in, Lu Huailin asked, “Why did you put the latch on?”
Gu Yihan pointed toward the neighbor’s yard as Lu Huailin placed the groceries in the kitchen.
Muttering, she said, “It’s that Lan Cao, coming over to tell me Zhao Ju said I relied on improper means to marry you.”
“Does she think I’m a fool? I’ve known Zhao Ju for so long—don’t you think I know her character?”
Seeing Gu Yihan following him in and out while still complaining, Lu Huailin chuckled: “I’ll talk to Commander Zhang about giving these idle military wives a political education class.”
Gu Yihan stared at him in disbelief: “A political education class?”
Lu Huailin took her hand and explained as they walked: “The Kun City Military District has two divisions. Many men meet the conditions to bring their wives along. Not every military wife has had the chance to be educated—they mostly come from rural areas with no access to education.”
Sitting with her on the wooden sofa in the living room, he continued: “Men at home who don’t meet the requirements stay behind to care for the elderly and children. By the time they can bring their wives, habits are already formed.”
Gu Yihan listened attentively. She knew being a military wife was tough, though she hadn’t experienced it herself.
Lu Huailin rested his chin on her shoulder and said softly, “That’s why I support you working. I don’t want, when I’m on duty…”
He paused, then added, “Working will help you focus on something else. I don’t want all your thoughts tied up here, worrying about me while guarding an empty house.”
Hearing his low voice, Gu Yihan’s nose tingled. Tears welled up uncontrollably as she said with a sob, “Whatever you do, don’t forget I’m waiting for you at home.”
Lu Huailin hugged her tightly: “Don’t worry, my wife.”
He steered the conversation back to the matter of the military housing: “So, you don’t have to force yourself to get along with the other wives. Deal with them as you wish—if it doesn’t work out, it’s fine. In your man’s heart, you’re the best.”
Gu Yihan, blushing slightly, glared at him: “I think you’re just being smooth-talking.”
She stood and headed straight for the kitchen: “You wash the vegetables, I’ll cook.”
“All right,” Lu Huailin said, joining her to prepare the meal together.
Gu Yihan brought the cooked dishes to the dining table: stir-fried potatoes with meat, loofah with scrambled eggs, and tomato-egg soup, to which she added water from the space. She thought adding extra water would be good for Lu Huailin.
Lu Huailin eagerly took a bite, exaggerating his expressions as he looked at her: “Still my wife—your cooking is just the best.”
Gu Yihan rolled her eyes: “Hurry and eat. I want to rest early. I have to report to the textile factory tomorrow.”
She ate little and felt full. Seeing this, Lu Huailin worriedly asked, “Why aren’t you eating more?”
Setting down her bowl, Gu Yihan met his concerned gaze: “I don’t eat much. You finish the rice so it’s not wasted. I’ll boil water and wash up.”
She went outside to the yard, looking at the bathroom near the kitchen. She was most satisfied that this courtyard had a separate toilet and bath, no need to fight for the public ones.
Lu Huailin quickly finished the meal, washed the dishes, took a rapid “combat shower,” and rushed to the bedroom.
He saw Gu Yihan at the dressing table applying snow cream.
Leaning close, he kissed her neck. Teasing her, she shrank back slightly, and in a husky voice said: “Husband, turn off the lights.”
Lu Huailin carried her and switched off the light.
In the dark, the room was extremely quiet. Lu Huailin’s heavy breathing was clearly audible.
It was their first time, and both were inexperienced. After a while, Lu Huailin went from clumsy to fully in control, teasing Gu Yihan several times before finally stopping.
