A group of people arrived at the Public Security Bureau. Officer Fu said to the policemen behind him, “Arrange for someone to keep an eye on them first.”
Then he turned to Gu Yihan and said, “Come, go to my office.”
Officer Fu led Gu Yihan into the office and asked, “What’s your production brigade’s phone number?”
Gu Yihan was stunned for a moment, then recited a string of numbers.
She watched as Officer Fu picked up the phone and dialed. Soon, the call connected.
“Hello, Jinyang City Public Security Bureau.”
Gu Yihan couldn’t hear what the other side said.
She only heard Director Fu say, “I’d like to verify something. Zhou Jianguo’s family has come to Jinyang City looking for Comrade Gu Yihan.”
“It concerns the two families’ children being switched at birth. We need to understand the situation.”
After hanging up, Officer Fu saw Gu Yihan looking at him in confusion and explained, “Your team leader said he’ll send your family over to explain things later.”
Gu Yihan nodded. “Thank you, Uncle Fu.”
Gu Family Village
The call was answered by the brigade accountant, Gu Xingwang. After hanging up, he rushed straight to Grandma Gu’s house.
Grandma Gu was washing vegetables. The eldest daughter-in-law was cooking while clanging pots and pans loudly.
Grandma Gu said angrily to her eldest son, “If you don’t discipline your wife, we’ll split the family.”
Gu Aiguo looked aggrieved. “Mom, you should blame Aidang. Why did he bring Jiaxing home?”
Gu Aidang was also frustrated. Who would have thought that after Zhou Jiaxing slimmed down, he would look exactly like him?
He said angrily, “If I hadn’t brought him back, people in the village would’ve said I was having an affair with Liu Zhaodi. I might as well have switched the child back!”
Thinking of the money and coupons Gu Yihan mailed home every month, Grandma Gu stepped forward and slapped Gu Aidang.
“I only recognize Xiaohan as my granddaughter. No one else counts!”
Gu Aidang shouted back, “Mom, you can’t just think about yourself! That ungrateful brat hasn’t given me a cent. Jiaxing is still my son!”
In her own room, Chen Xiu hugged her son Gu Bao and cried in anger.
At that moment, Gu Xingwang pushed open the door.
Seeing Grandma Gu and Gu Aidang confronting each other, he said awkwardly, “Aunt Gu.”
Grandma Gu looked at him. “Xingwang, what’s the matter?”
Gu Xingwang said directly, “Zhou Jianguo’s family went to Jinyang City to look for Xiaohan. They said the children were switched at birth. The police are verifying it.”
Grandma Gu immediately started cursing, jumping up and down: “That old witch Zhou! I raised that child with so much hardship—she thinks she can just steal the fruits of my labor? No way!”
After speaking, she grabbed Gu Xingwang and rushed to the brigade office, moving so nimbly it hardly matched her age.
Jinyang City Public Security Bureau
“Ring ring ring…”
When the phone rang, Gu Yihan immediately looked at Officer Fu.
He picked up the phone.
“Xiaohan!”
The voice was so loud that Gu Yihan could hear it from afar.
Officer Fu hurriedly held the receiver away from his ear, yet Grandma Gu’s voice was still clearly audible.
“Listen, Grandma’s telling you—Old Lady Zhou is a liar! Don’t believe her! She’s jealous that you’re the most capable child in ten villages and eight hamlets. She wants to suck your blood!”
She rattled on nonstop, not giving Officer Fu a chance to speak at all.
Gu Yihan laughed and asked tentatively, “Uncle Fu, how about I talk to my grandma first?”
Officer Fu handed her the phone and stood aside, clearly wanting to listen.
Gu Yihan didn’t mind.
“Grandma, of course I’m your real granddaughter. If I weren’t, who would send money to unrelated people every month?”
Grandma Gu’s heart skipped a beat when she heard that.
“Of course, you’re my granddaughter!”
Seeing that Grandma Gu understood her meaning, Gu Yihan said seriously,
“Grandma, I suspect my mother gave birth to twins—a boy and a girl. Jiaxing was stolen by their family.”
Grandma Gu’s eyes lit up.
That’s right! She was old and muddleheaded anyway. As long as she insisted they were twins, who would dare snatch her granddaughter?
She hurriedly said, “Yes, you’re definitely a Gu family child.”
Gu Yihan didn’t say much more and handed the phone back to Officer Fu.
After asking a few questions, Officer Fu hung up and sized Gu Yihan up from head to toe.
Gu Yihan let him look. He was a professional, after all. And in this era, who had evidence? There was no DNA testing.
After a while, Officer Fu said, “I already know about you and Xiao Lu. When he left, he asked me to take care of you.”
Gu Yihan was confused.
She had only agreed to consider him first when choosing a partner. Had he told everyone?
Seeing her silence, Officer Fu said, “You can go back now. I’ll take care of the three people from your village.”
Gu Yihan said gratefully, “Thank you, Uncle Fu. I’ll go now.”
Officer Fu nodded and waved her out.
Interrogation Room
Liu Zhaodi and the other two were locked inside, their stomachs growling.
They had planned to make Gu Yihan treat them to braised pork at the state-run restaurant. Who knew she wouldn’t acknowledge them?
Zhou Jianguo looked at Liu Zhaodi’s slovenly appearance and grew angrier the more he looked.
He rolled up his sleeves and dragged her up, beating her violently.
“You made me raise someone else’s son for nothing! I’ll beat you to death, you bitch!”
His fists landed heavily on her body.
Liu Zhaodi bit her lip tightly and made no sound.
Ever since Zhou Jiaxing began to resemble Gu Aidang more and more, Zhou Jianguo often beat her to vent his anger.
Officer Fu pushed open the door and shouted, “Stop it! You’re already causing trouble before you’ve even left!”
Zhou Jianguo hurriedly stopped, afraid of being locked up.
Officer Fu said bluntly, “I’ll arrange for someone to escort you to the train station and watch you board.”
Liu Zhaodi suddenly stood up and shouted, “I’m not going! Gu Yihan is my daughter. She has to support me!”
“If she doesn’t, she’s unfilial! I’ll go to her factory and make trouble. Let’s see which factory dares to hire such an unfilial person!”
Old Lady Zhou sneered, “She won’t even be filial to her real grandma, but she’s filial to outsiders.”
Officer Fu looked at Liu Zhaodi mockingly.
“You couldn’t give birth to a son, so you stole someone else’s twin boy.”
“You ruined that boy’s future, and now that the girl has become successful, you want to steal her back. You really planned this well.”
“If you still want to make trouble, fine. Kidnapping children is enough to get you jailed. Go sit in prison for a few years first.”
Hearing about jail, Zhou Jianguo panicked. “We’ll go home right away!”
Officer Fu ignored Liu Zhaodi’s unwilling expression. “Someone will escort you later.”
The three were put on a train.
Liu Zhaodi said bitterly, full of hatred, “Didn’t she say we’re traffickers? Then let’s sell her!”
Old Lady Zhou thought of all the things Gu Yihan sent that “old woman” every year and said, “No.”
Liu Zhaodi stared at her darkly. “Mom, I know what you’re thinking. You just want her money. But you saw her attitude.”
“Gu Yihan is prettier than others, educated, and can sell for a high price. This can count as her repaying me for giving birth to her.”
Old Lady Zhou opened her mouth but didn’t speak.
Zhou Jianguo said irritably, “Mom, either way we’ll get money. She’s just a girl—we’re not short of those.”
“Which village girl doesn’t bring bride price? Er Ya gave us a grandson. We’ll need money in the future.”
Thinking of her great-grandson, Old Lady Zhou fell silent.
