Accounting Office
Sister Li was extremely irritable, complaining as she worked: “Originally, we were short one Sister Zhuang, and HR hasn’t transferred anyone yet. And this week, Zhou Tingmei still hasn’t shown up today.”
Liu Yang echoed Sister Li: “Yeah, who wants their workload increased without a pay raise?”
Gu Yihan pretended to ask casually, “I haven’t taken any leave before. What if one day I have something to do and can’t come—who should I notify?”
Sister Zhang, who had been silent until now, suddenly spoke: “You ask Xiao Ma in HR for leave; she’ll inform our accounting department.”
Liu Yang looked at Sister Zhang in confusion: “Xiao Ma came over?”
Sister Li, who was the first to arrive at the office, quickly interjected: “No, I haven’t gone out all morning. How would I know if she came or not?”
Sister Li slammed the table in frustration: “Zhou Tingmei is absent without leave!”
Gu Yihan lowered her head, thinking to herself. Zhou Tingmei not showing up for work meant she had guessed right yesterday.
Yesterday at the Public Security Bureau, Gu Yihan had lied—she hadn’t seen Zhou Tingmei’s husband. She could only guess that the person speaking to Zhou Tingmei had been Zhang Qiang.
“Creak”
The office door opened. Sister Zhang immediately stood up and smiled: “Secretary Su, you’re here! Is there something you need?”
Secretary Su smiled at her: “I’m looking for Comrade Gu Yihan.”
Everyone in the room turned to look at Gu Yihan when they heard her name.
Hearing Secretary Su call her, Gu Yihan looked up and asked, “Secretary Su, do you need me for something?”
Secretary Su sized Gu Yihan up with a smile: “Director Luo wants to see you. Comrade Gu, come with me to the director’s office.”
Gu Yihan put down her pen, stood, and followed Secretary Su out of the office.
After watching them leave, Sister Li clicked her tongue: “Tsk tsk, this little Han is really something. Deputy Director Shen hasn’t even concluded anything yet, and now she’s already rubbing elbows with higher-ups.”
Sister Zhang didn’t respond. She was about to close the office door when Ma Chao from HR arrived, leading a young, pretty girl.
Ma Chao glanced at Sister Zhang with a smile: “You came out to welcome me since you knew I was coming?”
Sister Zhang replied modestly: “You look in great spirits today. Good news?”
“Good news, but it’s not for me. It’s for your accounting department,” said Ma Chao, pulling a female colleague out from behind him.
“Comrade Tang Jiaojiao, this is Sister Zhang,” Ma Chao introduced.
Tang Jiaojiao put on a delicate, soft expression: “Hello, Sister Zhang.”
Sister Zhang looked at her age and whispered to Ma Chao: “Isn’t she too young to take over Sister Zhuang’s work?”
Ma Chao patted Sister Zhang’s hand reassuringly: “Don’t worry. Tang Jiaojiao will take over Zhou Tingmei’s work.”
Sister Zhang looked surprised: “Comrade Zhou Tingmei isn’t working anymore?”
Ma Chao smiled at her: “This was a decision from leadership. Okay, you guide Comrade Tang to get familiar with the work. I’ll head back now.”
After saying this, he went downstairs. Sister Zhang, not hearing what she wanted, turned to Tang Jiaojiao: “Come in with me and get familiar with the work first.”
Tang Jiaojiao smiled and nodded.
Gu Yihan followed Secretary Su to Director Luo’s office and watched him knock on the door.
“Come in.”
Secretary Su opened the door for her. She glanced at him: “Aren’t you coming in?”
Wearing glasses, Secretary Su’s expression was unreadable. He only gave a professional smile: “Director Luo wants to see you.”
Gu Yihan stepped into the director’s office. The space was sizable but contained only a desk, two wooden sofas facing each other for guests, and a wooden coffee table.
“Director Luo, you wanted to see me?” Gu Yihan asked first.
Director Luo looked up and smiled: “Comrade Gu Yihan, right? You’ve really made the Mechanical Factory look good this time.”
“Sit on the sofa for a bit. Someone will bring you your reward shortly.”
Gu Yihan walked to the side of the sofa but hadn’t sat down before the office door was pushed open.
“Old Luo, you’re comfortable here, huh? No more sun and wind outside,” a loud, middle-aged police voice rang out, followed by Lu Huailin.
Gu Yihan noticed Lu Huailin walking directly to her side.
She looked at him in confusion, but his face showed no expression.
Director Luo walked while speaking: “Old Fu, I can’t compare with you. I still prefer your line of work, but there’s no choice. The organization needs me here.”
He gestured to Officer Fu: “Let’s go sit over there. Comrade Gu has been waiting for you.”
Officer Fu finally noticed Gu Yihan standing aside, smiled, and sat across from her on the sofa: “Comrade Gu, just call me Uncle Fu. Please, sit.”
“You were careful this time, helping the country catch the mole.”
He then pulled an envelope from his pocket and handed it to Gu Yihan: “Here’s a 400-yuan cash reward and a certificate.”
Gu Yihan took it with a smile: “Thank you, Uncle Fu.”
Officer Fu then looked at her seriously: “For your safety, your honor cannot be made public.”
Gu Yihan felt pleased. She definitely didn’t want anyone to know she had reported the mole, but she said earnestly: “Uncle Fu, don’t worry. I’ll keep it completely confidential.”
Seeing their conversation end, Director Luo told Gu Yihan: “Xiao Gu, go back to work now.”
Gu Yihan nodded and stood, heading for the door. Just as she was about to close it, Lu Huailin grabbed the door, startling her.
Seeing her confused look, he said expressionlessly: “I’ll see you out.”
Gu Yihan tried to read his face but saw nothing.
They walked one in front of the other.
Lu Huailin glanced at the young girl ahead of him. Two years had passed, and she had grown even more beautiful. He blurted out: “Comrade Gu, how old are you now?”
Gu Yihan turned in puzzlement, thinking, Could this guy be interested in me? She replied: “Seventeen.”
Lu Huailin realized she was ten years younger than him. Knowing her age, he wasn’t in a hurry to think about dating: “Still pretty young. No need to worry about finding someone. I’m twenty-seven, deputy regiment commander.”
Gu Yihan listened to his rambling, snickered, and then walked closer, saying: “Do you like me?”
The straightforward question made Lu Huailin’s face flush slightly.
He opened his mouth, thought of her age, and said: “Then… do you want to consider me?”
Gu Yihan pretended to think seriously, then smiled at him: “I’m still young. Not considering it for now.”
She turned and walked straight into the office area. Reaching downstairs, she told him: “I’m here, on the second floor. You can go back.”
Just as she was on the stairs, Lu Huailin pulled her back and asked: “Then when you do start thinking about it, consider me first.”
Gu Yihan looked up seriously. He was about 188 cm tall, with a high, straight nose and defined features, exuding a heroic aura.
She smiled: “Okay,” and ran up the stairs.
Lu Huailin watched her receding figure, feeling elated. He couldn’t wait to report this romance back to the army.
