Zhou Na had just entered the office, and after thinking for a moment, she decided to follow Ma Chao’s advice and lock the door.

Sister Zhuang saw Zhou Na locking the door and asked curiously, “What’s going on?”

Zhou Na noticed that all three people in the office were looking at her. She had no choice but to tell them what Ma Chao from HR had said.

“I just don’t understand—what does this matter with Wang Xiang have to do with me?”

Sister Li opened her mouth to say, “That woman isn’t reasonable at all…”

But seeing Zhou Na’s indifferent expression, she stopped herself, not wanting to get on anyone’s nerves.

Outside the Accounting Department

Gu Yihan was handing out wages to the workers, giving money to those who had just signed for it.

“Zhou Na, come out! You little bitch, can’t stand to see others do well!”

Gu Yihan looked up and saw a middle-aged woman in gray clothes with a sharp, nasty expression.

A young male worker was queuing up, and the woman shoved him aside. Gu Yihan said calmly, “Move, a good dog doesn’t block the way.”

The young worker flushed with anger.

A bystander, annoyed, said, “Can’t you see there’s a line?”

“Blaming others for your own mistakes—never seen such shameless people.”

Wang Xiang’s mother dramatically slapped her thigh and collapsed to the ground, crying as she shouted, “The workers at the machinery factory look down on us poor old folks!”

Then she rolled on the ground, crying, “My good daughter—these machinery factory workers tricked her out of every penny!”

“You’re all in it together, bullying us poor folks!”

She rolled around, kicking up dust.

Gu Yihan watched in disbelief. Even though she had grown up in Gujia Village, she had never seen anyone this shameless.

The workers in line all kept their distance. The woman kept claiming the entire machinery factory was bullying her—who could stand that?

Gu Yihan ignored her and shouted, “Queue up, queue up! Go to Ma Chao for signatures.”

Her gaze swept to Wang Xiang’s mother. The woman suddenly sprang up with a speed that seemed impossible for her age and charged toward Gu Yihan.

She shouted, “You little bitch! You dared to push my daughter into getting a marriage certificate!”

Gu Yihan dodged as the woman swung at her face and yelled for Brother Li from Security: “Brother Li! Someone’s trying to rob us!”

Before Ma Chao from HR had arrived, he had already notified Security. Sure enough, here they were.

Security officer Li grabbed Wang Xiang’s mother’s wrist: “Are you trying to steal state property?”

Wang Xiang’s mother, strong from years of labor, yanked her hand free and spat in Brother Li’s face.

“You think you can scare me? This factory’s nothing but a gang of bandits! My good daughter was tricked and even urged to cut ties with her family!”

She glared at Gu Yihan: “Zhou Na, you don’t get off either. Our Wang family won’t let this go. You dared send my son to the countryside—don’t you know how many eyes Lord Ma Wang has?”

Security officer Li, disgusted, ran off to wash his face.

One younger officer tried to step forward to reason with her, but Wang Xiang’s mother shouted: “Pervert! Not even grandma is spared! I’m reporting you to the Revolutionary Committee!”

Everyone froze. The newly established Revolutionary Committee (October this year) was strictly monitoring improper conduct.

Wang Xiang’s mother grinned at Gu Yihan: “Don’t think that just because you have the factory director behind you, you can do whatever you want.”

“You must pay 500 yuan for the bride price and give my daughter a job!”

The onlookers snickered. One female worker whispered, “She’s crazy for money—just trying to extort them.”

Another said, “Didn’t you see? The barefoot aren’t afraid of those with shoes.”

When Maomao arrived, Gu Yihan finally had some backup. She spat back at Wang Xiang’s mother: “Have you eaten shit yet? Don’t believe everything people tell you.”

Wang Xiang’s mother lunged at Gu Yihan, trying to tear her clothes.

Before she could reach her, Maomao pounced, pinning her down and biting her hair.

“Ah…where did this mad dog come from!” Wang Xiang’s mother screamed, covering her face.

Gu Yihan was annoyed—this was wasting time. “If anyone’s dying, it’ll be you first. Blind fool, who told you I was Zhou Na?”

“Let go, Maomao. Is this idiot even worth biting? Stinking enough to clear a three-mile radius. Should’ve peed on herself before going out.”

Maomao stood, lifted her leg, and pissed on Wang Xiang’s mother.

The onlookers laughed at Maomao’s antics.

Wang Xiang’s mother, hair like a bird’s nest, didn’t even notice the urine on herself, glaring at Gu Yihan: “If you’re not Zhou Na, then who is?”

A worker waiting for wages pointed: “She’s in the room with the door closed.”

Wang Xiang’s mother ran to the office, pounding the door: “Zhou Na, open the door! You dared push Wang Xiang into marrying, why can’t you open a door?”

Zhou Na had heard the commotion but refused to come out.

Inside, she confronted her: “What does this have to do with me? Your daughter’s a slut. Stopping a man from leaving? Probably your doing.”

Zhou Na hated Wang Xiang now more than ever—she deserved a lifetime of suffering.

Wang Xiang’s mother spat: “Pfft, you rotten thing, eyeing your brother-in-law, and you dare blame Wang Xiang?”

Zhou Na trembled with anger. If Wang Xiang were here, she would slap her several times.

“Quiet!” Director Li’s booming voice interrupted. He strode over, followed by Deputy Director Shen and other officials.

Hearing her brother-in-law arrive, Zhou Na prepared to open the door but was stopped by Sister Li.

Sister Li, looking at Zhou Na with reddened eyes, said: “Go out and let your brother-in-law handle this. Afraid he’ll be implicated?”

“I…” Zhou Na couldn’t respond, since she still lived in her brother-in-law’s house.

Sister Li continued seriously: “If someone reports this, your residence in your brother-in-law’s home will be impossible to explain.”

Wang Xiang’s mother, seeing the leadership arrive, was unfazed: “Hmph, it took you so long to get here! Your factory’s impressive!”

“One workshop worker married a young woman with a job without spending a penny.”

“The factory director’s sister-in-law advised her to steal the household registration and secretly get married.”

“From now on, anyone who can’t find a wife should come to the machinery factory—no money, and still gets a job. How wonderful!”

Deputy Director Shen admired Gu Yihan’s composure, distributing wages to workers without interruption.

Director Li, stern: “Regarding Wang Xiang, our factory will investigate and give an explanation. But right now, you’re seriously damaging the factory’s reputation.”

“The matter is serious, and Wang Xiang may be dismissed.”

Wang Xiang’s mother wasn’t afraid. She wanted Wang Xiang’s job gone—she was an ungrateful child.

She glared at Director Li: “Pay 500 yuan in compensation, and Wang Xiang’s job must be reassigned. Leadership has no say.”

Director Li was about to respond when Deputy Director Shen interrupted, smiling: “The job is yours to manage, how you handle it is none of our business. But demanding compensation is extortion. We can report it to the police and follow proper procedures.”

“Handle family conflicts at home. We won’t interfere.”

Wang Xiang’s mother protested: “But Zhou Na pushed my daughter! That deserves compensation!”

Director Li pulled out ten black stones from his pocket, tossed them to her, and said: “That’s all. Not a penny more.”

Wang Xiang’s mother didn’t care about their attitude and took the money.

Since she had profited, she didn’t linger, but gave Director Li a meaningful glance as she left.
