After Gu Yihan and Maomao arrived at a nearby park, she started brisk walking around it to exercise.

Maomao was beyond excited, rolling on the ground constantly, then suddenly running circles around her in a frenzy.

When Gu Yihan grew tired, she found a wooden bench in the park and sat down.

She said to Maomao, who was staying close by, “Go play by yourself. I’m going to rest here for a while.”

Maomao, as if following a command, bolted off and disappeared from sight.

Gu Yihan patted her calves—after a long period without exercise, her legs ached from the walk.

Suddenly, a sharp scream rang out: “Please, let my daughter go! I’ll give you anything you want!”

Hearing the voice of a woman crying, Gu Yihan immediately got up and turned toward the direction of the sound—after all, it might be a desperate criminal, and her own safety came first.

As she walked, she thought: A gentleman does not stand under a dangerous wall—surely a sage said this, it must be right.

She had barely gone far when she heard Maomao barking loudly.

Worried, she turned and ran toward the sound.

From a distance, she saw Maomao barking nonstop, lowering its front legs into a crouch, bending its hind legs, body low, neck hairs rising in alarm.

Frightened, she ran while shouting, “Maomao!”

Finally, she reached Maomao and saw that there were many people around.

Two men in police uniforms were present, while a young man wielding a knife was holding a woman hostage, confronting a middle-aged officer.

Another young officer was evacuating the crowd of onlookers.

A middle-aged woman in a checkered shirt was crying and begging the man to release her daughter. Seeing him unmoved, she pushed away the young woman supporting her.

The young woman immediately said, “Second Aunt, it’s too dangerous. Don’t go over there.”

She tried to pull her back but was stopped by the young officer, who said, “Leave. If there’s a threat to life, you’ll be responsible.”

Worried for her own safety, the young woman glanced at the hostage and left.

The middle-aged woman slowly approached the young man, speaking in a humble tone, “Can I take my daughter’s place?”

The young man tensed as she walked over, his hand holding the knife trembling: “Don’t come closer!” He slashed the knife across the woman’s neck.

“Ah… Mom, it hurts! Help me!” the hostage cried.

The middle-aged woman trembled violently and said, “I won’t move. I won’t move.”

The young man then threatened the two officers: “Let me go, or I’ll kill her.”

The officers did not dare act rashly and tried to reason with him: “There are people all around this park. Even if we let you go, you won’t get far. Release this woman, and we can treat this lightly.”

The young man pressed the knife harder against the woman’s neck and sneered, “Treat this lightly? Are you fools?”

At that moment, Gu Yihan saw Maomao ready to attack, her heart pounding in fear.

In a flash, Maomao lunged from the side, knocking the young man down and biting his wrist that held the knife.

The young man cried out in pain and instinctively released the knife.

The two officers immediately moved in, restraining the young man and rescuing the woman who had fallen.

The middle-aged woman rushed to her daughter, checked the wound, and found it wasn’t deep, feeling relieved.

She took a bandage from her bag and quickly dressed the wound.

Seeing that Maomao still hadn’t let go, Gu Yihan stepped forward, patting its back to calm it: “Maomao, let go. This meat doesn’t taste good.”

Maomao obeyed, and Gu Yihan held its head, stroking it continuously. The dog whimpered in a slightly aggrieved way.

The young man, eyes reddened with anger, shouted, “You shameless woman! It’s your dog, and you ruined my plan. Just wait—you won’t get away with this!”

The young officer kicked him in the knee: “Stop threatening people. You’ll talk when you get out.”

The middle-aged officer looked at Maomao and smiled: “This is your dog? You’ve raised it well. Is it a retired military dog?”

Gu Yihan looked up at him: “No, just an ordinary local dog.”

The officer was surprised, looking at Maomao: “It doesn’t look like an ordinary local dog. And it’s smart too.”

Gu Yihan didn’t respond; she didn’t want attention on Maomao. Ever since Maomao ate the fruit from her space, she noticed it could even recognize colors and never misunderstood her commands.

Seeing that she didn’t want to answer, the officer didn’t push further, assuming it was a mixed-breed.

After calming her daughter, the middle-aged woman spoke briefly with the police, saying her daughter was too frightened and would postpone the statement until the next day.

They agreed and took the restrained young man back to the station.

Once the hostage calmed down, she walked up to Gu Yihan, who was scolding Maomao: “My name is Li Yajing, 19 years old. Is this your dog?”

Gu Yihan looked at the girl’s doll-like face, hard to believe she was 19; she looked even younger than Gu Yihan herself.

“I’m Gu Yihan. You can call me Xiaohan. This is Maomao.”

Li Yajing’s eyes lit up as she looked at Maomao. “Xiaohan, can I pet it?”

Gu Yihan asked Maomao: “The young lady wants to pet you. Do you agree?”

Maomao looked at the recently rescued girl with a disdainful gaze, which Li Yajing immediately noticed.

She was surprised: “It’s looking down on me.”

Gu Yihan awkwardly said, “No…” Then she looked at Maomao: “If you agree, nod your head.”

Maomao reluctantly nodded.

Li Yajing was thrilled, hugging Maomao and stroking its back: “Its fur is so smooth, and it doesn’t smell at all.”

Gu Yihan twitched at the corner of her mouth—Maomao was bathed every day. She was just glad they had a well at home; otherwise, the bathing alone would wear her out.

Seeing that the girl wouldn’t stop petting it, Maomao got irritated and dashed behind Gu Yihan.

Li Yajing, feeling embarrassed, said: “Thank you. If it weren’t for Maomao, I don’t know what would have happened in the end.”

Li Yajing’s mother, Mrs. Li, came over: “We really owe you our thanks today.”

Gu Yihan politely replied: “When someone’s in trouble, you can’t just stand by.”

Mrs. Li, still shaken, said angrily: “This young man is a habitual thug, waiting for women alone at night to harass them. Victims often don’t dare report it, which makes him bolder.”

“This time, he harassed a girl from a well-connected family, so she reported him to the police.”

Mrs. Li sighed: “Unfortunately, my daughter and I got involved during the police pursuit.”

Then she brightened and asked warmly: “Xiaohan, where do you work?”

Gu Yihan didn’t hide it: “I’m an accountant at a machinery factory.”

Mrs. Li said: “That’s a good job. I’m an obstetrician at the People’s Hospital. My daughter works at the department store. Come visit us when you’re free.”

She gave Gu Yihan her home address.

Li Yajing grabbed Gu Yihan’s arm: “Where do you live? I’ll come find you to hang out.”

Gu Yihan laughed and told her the address, then glanced at the wound on her neck: “You should get that checked at the hospital. We can chat more later.”

Li Yajing nodded and bid farewell.
