Gu Family Village

Grandma Gu walked out of the Brigade Leader Gu Baoqing’s house, humming a little tune and striding happily along the village path.

Old Mrs. Zhou, Liu Zhaodi’s mother-in-law, glared with jealousy, her eyes practically shooting flames.

In a sarcastic tone, she said, “Oh? Is your little granddaughter sending you money again? You really did raise a little money god.”

Grandma Gu instinctively straightened her back, a proud smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. “What’s the matter? Jealous? That’s just not your fate in this life.”

Sigh, how come granddaughters can be so different? With that, she walked briskly along the dirt road, her steps light and quick.

Mrs. Zhou spat toward Grandma Gu’s back. “Pfft! What’s there to be proud about? She hasn’t come back in years anyway.”

Back home, Mrs. Zhou looked at her second granddaughter, Pan Di, who was picking vegetables, and her anger boiled over. She grabbed the broom behind the door and struck Pan Di violently.

Pan Di was caught off guard and was hit hard.

“Ah, Granny, stop!” Pan Di quickly stood up, hugging her arms to protect herself.

Seeing Pan Di trying to dodge, Mrs. Zhou cursed, “You little wretch! You dare to dodge me?”

Zhou Jiaxing heard the commotion and came out of the house, taunting, “Granny, you’re hitting too lightly. She obviously doesn’t take you seriously.”

Pan Di’s eyes flashed with hatred when she saw Zhou Jiaxing not only fail to help but make things worse.

While dodging Mrs. Zhou’s broom, she said, “Granny, I didn’t go anywhere today. I’ve been at home doing chores. I don’t know what I did wrong.”

Mrs. Zhou, tired from chasing and hitting her, said, “Look at your cousin Gu Yihan. Every month she can send money to that old man. And you? You’re nineteen, can’t get married, and just eat for free.”

Pan Di rubbed her sore arm and thought of what her elder sister had told her. A wave of despair washed over her.

Steeling herself, she rushed to Mrs. Zhou and grabbed her leg, saying, “Granny, Gu Yihan is really your biological granddaughter!”

Mrs. Zhou kicked Pan Di away. “Are you out of your mind? Your mother didn’t have the ability to give birth to a money god.”

Pan Di got up immediately and pointed at Zhou Jiaxing, who was watching the scene, saying, “That one is a bastard. He is the child of Gu Aigang, the second son of the Gu family.”

Then she stared at Mrs. Zhou wildly. “Mother, she swapped with Zhang Cuihua’s child.”

“My elder sister found out and wanted to tell, but mother married her off to an old man.”

“Mother threatened my elder sister that if she spoke up, that old man would beat her to death.”

After speaking, Pan Di looked at Liu Zhaodi and Zhou Jianguo, who were standing at the door.

Liu Zhaodi’s face turned pale. “Mother, don’t believe the words of this worthless girl.”

Pan Di’s eyes blazed with deep hatred as she looked at Liu Zhaodi. “I am your biological daughter, and you are willing to marry me off to that old bachelor for just 100 yuan?”

She then turned angrily toward Zhou Jiaxing. “And this fake child, not born of yours, you give whatever he wants.”

Mrs. Zhou and Zhou Jianguo were stunned, speechless at the revelation about the swapped children.

Zhou Jiaxing reacted first, kicking Pan Di two meters away with his fat body, roaring, “You little wretch! I’ll show you, you’re not my mother’s child, I’ll prove you’re not!”

Even Zhou Jianguo was shaken watching his youngest son act so violently.

Knowing she couldn’t rely on Liu Zhaodi, Pan Di quickly ran to Zhou Jianguo and grabbed his arm just as Zhou Jiaxing prepared to hit her again.

In a pitiful, desperate voice, she said, “Father, can you bear to watch our family struggle all their lives only to give everything to an outsider?”

“Father, my recruited son-in-law gave the child the Zhou surname; isn’t that better than a bastard? If you recognize my sister back, she can still send our family money every month.”

Mrs. Zhou’s heart skipped a beat. She looked at Pan Di and asked, “Are you telling the truth? Do you have any proof?”

Pan Di said, “Mother said it. She feared she couldn’t have a son and would be sent back to her parents, so she swapped with Zhang Cuihua’s son.”

“Granny, you remember when Zhou Jiaxing didn’t look like father as a child, right? You even gave him all the good food at home. Look at how fat he is now.”

Pan Di truly hated Liu Zhaodi. Seeing her elder sister living such a miserable life, she refused to repeat the same mistakes.

Mrs. Zhou and Zhou Jianguo both turned to look at Zhou Jiaxing. His fat face increasingly didn’t resemble the Zhou family, and they started to believe Pan Di’s words.

Liu Zhaodi grabbed Zhou Jianguo’s arm. “Jianguo, don’t believe this little wretch. She’s out for revenge, trying to ruin our family line.”

Zhou Jiaxing chimed in, “Yeah, father, I’m our only heir. Otherwise, when you get old, who’ll take care of you?”

Pan Di sneered at Zhou Jiaxing. Even now, he hadn’t realized the severity of the situation. With a selfish father like him, how could he raise a bastard?

Zhou Jianguo shook off Liu Zhaodi. “From now on, you two mother and son can only eat wild vegetables. Jiaxing, no more school—you’re not cut out for studying, it’s a waste of money.”

Zhou Jiaxing paid no mind; being the only son, he wouldn’t be starved.

Liu Zhaodi, realizing Zhou Jianguo had believed Pan Di, collapsed to the ground.

Mrs. Jiawang covered her mouth tightly. She hadn’t expected that a simple trip to borrow something would lead her to witness such a huge revelation.

The next morning, the entire village knew that Liu Zhaodi had swapped Zhang Cuihua’s child.

Several women went to Granny Gu’s house to inquire about her childbirth back then.

Granny Gu, now older and having forgotten much after sixteen years, could only say, “I only remember Zhang Cuihua’s child. I didn’t see the gender. Liu Zhaodi was about to give birth too.”

She dismissed them. “I don’t remember anything else.”

The village women whispered among themselves. “I didn’t expect it—so Gu Yihan wasn’t Zhang Cuihua’s child. Will she stop sending money now?”

Many villagers resented the Gu family for living well while they only earned work points from farming, with just two laborers in their household.

Grandma Gu, at home, cursed loudly: “Shameless people, saying little Han isn’t our real granddaughter!”

“They’re so jealous they can’t sleep at night, a bunch of gossiping trash, not fearing the family line dying out.”

The whole family sat at the table. Grandpa Gu frowned, smoking. People are selfish.

Even without mentioning that Gu Yihan sent 60 yuan every year and other items during festivals—which were rare in the countryside—Grandpa Gu himself would feel the absence.

Gu Aigang’s wife, Chen Xiu, held Gu Bao with concern. If it was true and the extra child came back, it would eat into Gu Bao’s inheritance.

She deliberately took Grandma Gu’s side. “Mother, little Han grew up with you and is so filial. How could you let her send things to the Zhou family in the future?”

Grandma Gu anxiously said, “Impossible!”

Her eyes swept threateningly across the family. “I say it clearly—little Han is our real granddaughter. I won’t recognize anyone else.”

“Especially you, second son—did you hear that?”

Gu Aigang himself was still bewildered. He couldn’t believe Zhou Jiaxing was his son, but he promised, “Mother, don’t worry. I only have Gu Bao as my son.”

Wang Ni sighed in relief. She had worried that without dividing the family, if another semi-grown boy came, the first branch would definitely lose out.
