“Sister Li, do you know Gu Yihan?”

Huang Mao didn’t answer, instead he asked back.

“That’s not for you to ask. Just tell me who sent you to investigate!”

Seeing Li Yajing’s tone was sharp, Huang Mao didn’t get angry. They had been working together for a long time and he knew she was loyal.

Her concern for Gu Yihan meant they had a good relationship.

So he smiled and explained, “Sister Li, if you want to know who sent me, I really don’t know his name. But!”

“But what?”

“I do know where he lives!”

Luckily, he had scoped out the location in advance, otherwise finding him might not have been easy.

Li Yajing’s eyes narrowed slightly as she looked up at the gradually darkening sky.

“Is it far?”

Huang Mao shook his head with a smile. “Not far. He lives in a large compound near the black market.”

Li Yajing nodded and handed him the pigeon in her hand. “Let’s go to your place first.”

At this moment, Tie Zhu, being considerate, quickly helped Huang Mao carry the pigeon. The group headed to Huang Mao’s house.

Once inside, Li Yajing went straight to the kitchen. She remembered last time when they collected wild animals for the brigade, a few burlap sacks were left in his house.

She found them, then picked out a few handy firewood sticks from the pile.

After weighing them, she went straight into Huang Mao’s bedroom.

Seeing Li Yajing carrying a weapon, Tie Zhu immediately jumped up and grabbed Huang Mao’s sleeve in alarm.

“Brother Mao, Sister Li… Sister Li isn’t going to hit me, right?!”

He had no habit of hitting women, and if Li Yajing hurt him, he might instinctively fight back—what then?

Huang Mao impatiently pulled back his sleeve, glared at Tie Zhu, and ignored him.

He hurried forward, took the firewood stick from Li Yajing, and passed one to Tie Zhu.

Then he said, “Sister Li, it’s about time. I’ll take you to identify him.”

Li Yajing glanced at Huang Mao, whose small eyes and bushy eyebrows made him look sharper than he seemed.

Huang Mao led Li Yajing and Tie Zhu along a secluded path, avoiding populated areas.

When they reached the front of the large compound, they hid behind a big tree.

“Sister Li, he comes back around eight every night. We’ll wait here for a while.” Huang Mao whispered.

Li Yajing frowned. “Why didn’t you say so earlier?!”

It was winter, and it got dark early. If he returned at eight, she’d have to wait over an hour.

“You didn’t ask!” Huang Mao sounded a bit aggrieved.

Li Yajing felt a pang in her heart. She had been too anxious when she heard someone was inquiring about Gu Yihan to think it through, so she forgot to ask.

The three of them waited for more than two hours, almost freezing.

Just as Li Yajing was about to suggest coming back tomorrow, Tie Zhu suddenly whispered, “He’s here… it’s him.”

Li Yajing quickly looked toward the alley. It was pitch black.

She couldn’t make out his face and didn’t know how they recognized him.

She pulled out a flashlight and shone it on him. When she saw it was Secretary Jiang, she froze for a moment, then fury instantly surged. This bastard had ruined her parents.

And now he wanted to harm Gu Yihan—old grudges and new grudges would be settled together.

With a wave of her hand, she commanded Huang Mao and Tie Zhu to approach and bag him.

The sudden bright light blinded Secretary Jiang, leaving him in darkness before he could shout.

Tie Zhu immediately threw him into the burlap sack.

Huang Mao struck his leg with a stick.

Secretary Jiang screamed and fell to the ground, the darkness making him panic. “Ah… who’s there… help me…”

Li Yajing saw her chance, raised the firewood stick, and struck him hard.

Crack.

One of Secretary Jiang’s legs was broken by Li Yajing.

“Ahhhh…”

His scream echoed through the alley at night.

Li Yajing decided to eliminate the threat at the root, breaking his legs so he wouldn’t have the energy to scheme against anyone again.

Secretary Jiang thought that enemies from the Kun City black market had followed him to the capital and wanted to kill him.

He curled up tightly, constantly begging for mercy.

Huang Mao, seeing Li Yajing’s swift and ruthless strikes, swallowed nervously.

“Oh Lord… I haven’t offended this she-devil, have I?”

“Who’s there! Wailing in the middle of the night!”

Someone in the compound had heard Jiang’s screams and came out, dressed.

Seeing this, Huang Mao quickly dragged Li Yajing toward the alley exit.

If they got caught, people might think they were murderers!

Li Yajing didn’t bother arguing. Since she now knew Secretary Jiang was in the capital, she decided to have someone keep an eye on him. Once his legs healed, she’d finish him off.

People in the compound followed the sound and found Secretary Jiang, hearing him continuously shout, “Don’t kill me… don’t kill me…”

Someone noticed his twisted leg and shouted, “Quick! Take him to the hospital! Xiao Jiang’s leg has been broken!”

Hearing this, everyone gasped and quickly got a cart or carried him to the nearest hospital.

Meanwhile, on the way back, Li Yajing felt much more relaxed, a smile tugging at her eyes.

Tie Zhu followed quietly like a cautious quail, occasionally glancing at Li Yajing.

They say the heart of a woman can be cruel—and it’s true.

When a woman is ruthless, men like them can do nothing.

“Sister Li, do you have a grudge against him?”

Huang Mao spoke politely now, keeping his posture low.

Judging from Li Yajing’s clean and decisive action, she was definitely ruthless.

Li Yajing glanced at him with dark eyes but said nothing.

A grudge? Of course.

If it weren’t for Secretary Jiang and Zeng Xiao, her parents wouldn’t have been demoted.

She wouldn’t have suffered abuse from Mother Chang or lost her job.

After divorce, without an income, she wouldn’t have had to take risks in the black market, constantly on edge…

On the weekend, Gu Yihan opened her eyes and saw Lu Huailin looking at her tenderly.

Rubbing her eyes, she asked, “You’re off today?”

Lu Huailin leaned down and kissed her forehead, smiling. “Dad wants us to go to his place today.”

“Oh,” Gu Yihan replied, then asked, “Does Dad have something important?”

Lu Huailin helped his wife up and went to the closet to get her a down jacket.

Glancing at the sky-blue domestic down jacket, she asked curiously, “They sell down jackets in Jing City?”

Lu Huailin laughed, lifted her, and gently rubbed her nose.

“I had a comrade in Shanghai buy it and mail it over.”

Gu Yihan nodded. That explained why she hadn’t seen such jackets in Jing City’s department stores.
