Gu Yihan’s consciousness was trapped inside the space. Every time she tried to break free, the pain felt like knives cutting through her mind.
The scorching heat of the space left her with nowhere to hide. The supplies stored inside had no effect on her—they only affected her consciousness.
Gu Yihan could only stay at the edge of the space, enduring the alternating hot and cold temperatures.
Within the space, the temperature fluctuated relentlessly, and her consciousness could not rest. She could only watch helplessly as the misty center shifted between hot and cold.
She had no idea how much time had passed when the hazy space seemed to twist as if it were being torn apart, shaking violently, making it impossible even for her consciousness to stay steady.
From the mist emerged a sapling. It seemed to go through all four seasons in rapid succession, quickly flowering and bearing fruit.
Gu Yihan was so shocked that she covered her mouth with her hand. Once the space stabilized, she circled the tree several times. On the tree, only ten bright red fruits hung lonely. Could these be eaten?
Beneath the tree roots was a tiny, pitiful puddle, barely enough for a bowl of water. Was this the space upgrading?
So, being trapped in the space was just to make her witness its upgrade?
She tried to project her consciousness outside the space, finally regaining control.
Slowly opening her eyes, Gu Yihan was startled by a magnified face right in front of her.
Instinctively, she slapped the face—someone who looked “okay” but seemed like trouble.
“Smack!”
Gu Yihan immediately propped herself up, her throat hoarse from not speaking for so long. She rasped, “You pervert.”
She swung her hand for another slap, but her wrist was caught by a large palm.
She struggled, pulling her arm, but couldn’t move it.
With her eyes fixed fiercely on the man holding her wrist, she prepared to strike with her other hand.
Lu Huailin pressed his tongue against his lips and said, “You misunderstand. I’m not that blind.” He glanced at Gu Yihan’s not-yet-fully-developed chest.
Gu Yihan followed his gaze, her blood boiling, her vision blackening with anger.
Shen Yujie, seeing Lu Huailin being hit by the female colleague on the sickbed, was shocked, then sneered mischievously: “Miss, you’ve misunderstood. He’s just trying to check your temperature. He saved you and brought you to the military hospital.”
Gu Yihan then noticed Shen Yujie in a white coat standing nearby and realized she was in a hospital.
Turning back to the man she had struck, she realized her mistake and, pretending nothing happened, said, “Let go. You’ve pinched my arm until it’s swollen. Can’t you see?”
As long as she wasn’t embarrassed, the other person would be.
Only then did Lu Huailin slowly release her wrist, placing his arm behind his back, thinking how silky smooth her skin felt upon contact.
Shen Yujie, unable to contain himself, laughed loudly at the door, “Hahaha, Lu Huailin, you finally got your turn!”
He didn’t worry about the two in the room overhearing.
Once Shen Yujie calmed down outside, he entered the ward and saw the two staring at each other in silence.
Gu Yihan felt too embarrassed to speak, given her earlier misunderstanding.
Being mostly around men in the military, Lu Huailin wasn’t sure what to say either.
Seeing Shen Yujie enter, Gu Yihan broke the stalemate: “Doctor, can I be discharged?”
Shen Yujie, seeing her ignore Lu Huailin, smiled and said, “You can leave now. You’ve been unconscious for three days and nights.”
Gu Yihan gasped, “Three days and nights?” She threw off the blanket and almost fell getting off the bed. Lu Huailin’s quick reflexes caught her arm.
She had no choice but to use his support to sit back on the bed.
Shen Yujie quickly explained, “You haven’t eaten for a long time. Rising too quickly can cause dizziness and fatigue due to insufficient brain energy.”
Gu Yihan, pale, said, “Can you report to the police for me?”
At this moment, Lu Huailin, expressionless, said, “Don’t worry, those children have already been rescued.”
Gu Yihan carefully looked at the tall, handsome man standing before her, his sharp features exuding coldness and a piercing gaze.
“You’re the person from the jeep that day?”
Her consciousness had been fuzzy, and she had grabbed instinctively without seeing his face clearly.
Lu Huailin’s deep voice answered, “Yes.”
She ignored his cold demeanor and anxiously asked, “How many traffickers did you catch?”
Lu Huailin, hearing her, countered, “You know how many there were?”
Anger flaring, Gu Yihan’s eyes reddened as she said through gritted teeth, “There were two watching us: one named Gangzi, one named Brother Liang. They said their boss would meet them that afternoon.”
Lu Huailin’s face darkened. “Are you sure? They had someone to meet?”
Looking him in the eyes, Gu Yihan nodded, “Yes. They were going to sell me across the sea. I overheard it.”
In truth, Gu Yihan also suspected she might have been sold by someone familiar. The group had kidnapped all the other children—only she was an exception, which seemed too unusual.
Lu Huailin said to Shen Yujie, “I’ll make a call in your office.” Then he efficiently left the ward.
Shen Yujie vouched for his friend, “Don’t be fooled by his constant deadpan. He was extremely nervous when he brought you to see me.”
Gu Yihan smiled faintly. “I’m Gu Yihan. Doctor, may I know your name and the hospitalization fees?”
Shen Yujie wasn’t annoyed by the interruption, smiling: “I’m Shen Yujie. Lu Huailin paid your bill—29 yuan. You were in a single room, so it’s a bit more expensive.”
Gu Yihan instinctively reached for money from her space, then remembered her clothes were torn when she ran down the mountain.
Looking at herself, she saw she was wearing a floral dress—clearly not her own.
Shen Yujie explained, “Lu Huailin had someone from the military buy it, and the nurse changed your clothes.”
Embarrassed, Gu Yihan said, “Comrade Shen, thank you to you and Lu Huailin. Could you write down his contact info? I’ll remit the payment when I get back.”
Shen Yujie didn’t think much and scribbled Lu Huailin’s contact on scrap paper, handing it to her.
Gu Yihan checked the address: “Kun City Military District? This is Kun City?”
She awkwardly asked, “How long from Kun City to Jinyang City? How do I get there?”
She had no idea the traffickers transported her to Kun City overnight. She didn’t know the route, and publicly, she didn’t have money.
“Three hours by train from Kun City to Jinyang City,” Lu Huailin’s voice came from the doorway.
He then pulled out two large black bills and some ration tickets, handing them to her: “Take these for now.”
Gu Yihan naturally accepted them, saying, “Thank you. I admire soldiers the most. They’re always so reliable and lovely.”
She looked at Lu Huailin earnestly: “Don’t worry, I’ll remit the money to you when I get back.”
Shen Yujie, hearing her call a soldier “lovely,” twitched at the corner of his mouth. Soldiers… lovely?
He didn’t realize Gu Yihan truly meant it, not as a joke.
Lu Huailin, too, felt his face flush at her words, though his trained skin tone made it hard to notice.
