The staff from the Lu Street Office looked at Brother Lu in disbelief.
Turning slightly, one of them whispered to Lu Huailin, “This is your…?”
“Brother!”
Lu Huailin shouted, stopping Brother Lu from arguing with Fang Yi.
Brother Lu froze for a moment at the sound.
He turned to glance at Lu Huailin and sneered coldly, “I thought you wouldn’t come today!”
Lu Huailin gave him a sidelong glance and ignored him, thinking it best to let him enjoy his little moment of pride.
He paced past him and led the staff into their mother’s room.
The instant he pushed the door open, a wave of moldy, damp, and sour leftover food odors hit him squarely.
The staff, unprepared, nearly choked on the stench.
They immediately held their breath, their eyes landing on Mother Lu on the bed. When they saw her mouth tilted, drooling, they were stunned for a moment.
Lu Huailin didn’t pay attention to their reaction. He pulled out a handkerchief and wiped the corners of his mother’s mouth.
Looking at her ashen face, he softly said, “Mom, from now on, I’ll collect your pension.”
“From now on, whoever it’s your turn to stay with, I’ll give them your pension to cover your living expenses.”
When Mother Lu heard his voice, her eyes stared blankly at Lu Huailin. She wanted to nod.
But she was completely paralyzed, unable to move.
Silently in her mind, she wanted to shout, to scream a word that would make Lu Huailin drive Brother Lu out of the city.
She never wanted to see Brother Lu with Fang Yi again.
But her throat felt blocked.
No matter how wide she opened her mouth, no sound came out—only a silent roar.
Seeing this, the staff frowned and stepped closer to her bed.
They held their breath, trying to get a clear answer from her.
“Comrade Lu, do you agree that Comrade Lu Huailin will collect your pension from now on?”
Mother Lu saw the staff from the street office and excitedly tried to shout, “Ah! Ah! Ah!”
But the sounds that came out were like bubbles, bursting as soon as they left her throat, leaving only a “huff huff” of air.
Seeing that she couldn’t say a word, Lu Huailin frowned.
He patiently explained, “Mom, if you agree to let me collect your pension, just blink once.”
Then he and the staff closely watched her eyelashes, afraid of missing the blink.
After twenty seconds, Mother Lu could hold out no longer and blinked once.
The staff, seeing this, turned to Lu Huailin with delight: “Comrade Lu has agreed.”
Lu Huailin nodded expressionlessly, catching a glimpse of hatred in his mother’s eyes.
He couldn’t help but twitch the corner of his mouth, unsure if she hated him or Brother Lu.
The staff informed him that starting this month, Lu Huailin would collect his mother’s pension. If he didn’t have time, he could leave an address, and the street office would mail it.
Without hesitation, Lu Huailin pulled out his small notebook, wrote down the address, and handed it over.
The staff cheerfully took the note: “Don’t worry. I’ll make sure your mother’s pension is mailed to you on time.”
Lu Huailin nodded and thanked them.
At that moment, Lai Di arrived. She smiled at Lu Huailin and went straight into the room, efficiently tidying up his mother’s belongings.
Lu Huailin entered the adjacent bedroom and glanced at Brother Lu, who was sitting at the table drinking tea.
A faint, sarcastic smirk appeared at the corner of his mouth.
He said, “Brother, take care of yourself.”
Then he glanced at a stunned Fang Yi, scoffed, and walked out.
Brother Lu watched Lu Huailin’s tall, upright back, a flicker of jealousy in his eyes.
Why, born of the same parents, could he have unlimited glory, a happy marriage, and a smooth career?
Meanwhile, he had a wife who constantly dragged him down, and his career was full of setbacks.
An hour passed.
Lu Huailin drove away.
Fang Yi, seeing they had left, happily ran to close the door.
Before she could, six burly men shoved it open.
“Ah!”
Fang Yi screamed and fell to the ground.
Seeing this, Brother Lu’s eyes flickered, and he stepped forward to block the men from entering the bedroom.
Coldly, he said, “Who are you? Leave my house immediately, or I’ll report you for trespassing!”
The burly men laughed as if hearing a joke.
Then they glanced at Brother Lu’s angry face and Fang Yi, who had just gotten up.
Scoffing, they said, “Go ahead, I’d love for you to report it.”
Brother Lu, seeing their arrogance, wasn’t afraid of the police at all.
Pointing at the speaking man, he threatened, “This is trespassing. I’m going to…”
The big man waved them off, pushing Brother Lu aside.
Coldly, he said, “The tenant has already told our landlord they won’t rent this place anymore!”
After saying this, he raised his hand, and four or five more burly men quickly entered the bedroom.
Before Brother Lu and Fang Yi could react, all the tattered clothes and bedding in the house were thrown into the yard.
Fang Yi, seeing Brother Lu frown and not dare to intervene, was furious, her chest heaving.
“You’re dead! Didn’t you see them deliberately throwing our clothes and bedding?!”
Brother Lu’s eyes burned with rage. Lu Huailin had done this deliberately—on the day he took their mother away, he wanted to humiliate him.
The more he thought, the angrier he became, almost consumed by hatred.
For the first time, Brother Lu wanted to kill Lu Huailin.
If he died, all the Lu family’s property would be his.
The dignity trampled upon would also be reclaimed, piece by piece, with Lu Huailin’s death.
At this thought, a gleam of malice flashed in his eyes.
Fang Yi saw that no matter what she said, scolded, or urged, Brother Lu stood still in the yard.
Clenching her teeth, she ran into the house.
She found her carefully arranged dressing table and newly made cotton quilt torn apart and trampled.
Fang Yi was so furious her head buzzed; she blacked out.
Brother Lu didn’t care at all about what had happened to Fang Yi or himself.
Back at the residential compound, Lai Di, having settled Mother Lu, sat on the bed, chatting and patting the clean, thick bedding.
She sighed, “Aunt Lu, everything in your room and all the materials are brand new.”
“Brother Lu is really filial!”
Mother Lu rolled her eyes at Lai Di’s chatter, a hint of disdain flashing in her eyes.
No matter how filial Lu Huailin was, wasn’t it all just because he didn’t want his wife, Gu Yihan, to come take care of her?
