Lu Huailin saw his wife wearing a cold expression, looking as if she would make trouble for him if his answer wasn’t satisfactory.
The corners of his mouth lifted uncontrollably. He reached out and pinched her delicate little nose.
Smiling, he said, “Wife, don’t worry. I won’t bring Mom over early.”
Gu Yihan glanced at him and snorted, turning her head away. “You want to outsource your filial piety and let me take care of your mom? No way.”
Lu Huailin was stunned for a moment. He didn’t quite understand what “outsourcing filial piety” meant.
But he understood the rest.
He shook his head with a smile. “My mom never raised you. You don’t need to take care of her.”
After saying that, he pulled Gu Yihan into his arms and kissed her puffed-up cheek.
Smiling, he continued, “When it’s our turn to take care of Mom, we’ll let her live on the first floor with a caregiver.”
“We’ll stay on the second floor. She won’t even come out for meals—the caregiver will bring food into her room and feed her.”
“That way, you two won’t see each other much and won’t end up having conflicts that make you angry.”
Gu Yihan glanced at him and nodded. “That’s more like it.”
Then she suddenly remembered that he hadn’t mentioned finding a caregiver yet and asked, puzzled, “Have you found someone to take care of Mom?”
Lu Huailin nodded. “The woman who helped clean Mom’s room today looked pretty capable, so I asked her.”
“She said she’d be very willing to come to the family compound and take care of Mom full-time.”
Gu Yihan nodded. She didn’t ask how much it cost.
As long as she didn’t have to serve her mother-in-law, everything else was fine.
“Mom, I’m back!”
Hearing Haohao’s voice, Gu Yihan suddenly remembered that he had said he wanted to treat Xiao Yang to dinner today.
She quickly stood up and walked out of the living room. Just in time, she saw Haohao holding Xiao Yang’s hand tightly and dragging him inside.
He kept mumbling, “I promised yesterday that I’d treat you to dinner.”
Xiao Yang looked up at Gu Yihan awkwardly. “Comrade Gu, eating together was just something Haohao joked about.”
He had come empty-handed—how could he have the nerve to eat at their home?
Haohao pouted in dissatisfaction and looked at Gu Yihan pleadingly. He didn’t want to be a child who broke promises.
Seeing this, Gu Yihan walked over and gently patted his soft hair.
Then she looked at Xiao Yang and said, “Xiao Yang, Haohao said you helped him a lot at the research institute, so he wants to treat you to a meal as thanks.”
Xiao Yang opened his mouth, about to say that everything he did was just his duty—after all, Elder Tang had repeatedly instructed him—when Lu Huailin walked out smiling and put an arm around his shoulder.
“Come on, I happen to have something to ask you.”
And just like that, Xiao Yang was warmly kept by the family.
Seeing Lu Huailin chatting naturally with Xiao Yang and Haohao, one big and one small, Gu Yihan’s lips curved slightly.
She turned and went into the kitchen, closing the door.
She quickly took out the sweet-and-sour ribs, braised pork, and boiled fish she had prepared in advance.
Half an hour later…
Smelling the rich aroma, Lu Huailin felt puzzled. Seeing Haohao chatting with Xiao Yang, he stood up and walked to the kitchen door.
“Wife, do you need help?”
Gu Yihan quickly turned off the stove. “All the dishes are done. Come and carry them to the table.”
Lu Huailin took a deep breath and pushed the door open.
While serving soup, Gu Yihan said, “Good thing Haohao told me in advance. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be eating for at least another hour.”
Lu Huailin glanced at the dishes on the counter. His eyes flickered.
Whatever his wife said was right.
Even if she were some spirit creature who had cultivated into human form, as long as she didn’t leave him and their son, he’d pretend not to notice.
During dinner…
Xiao Yang saw so many rich dishes and felt flattered. He decided he would take even better care of Haohao at the institute in the future.
Otherwise, he’d feel sorry for such hospitality.
While gnawing on a chicken wing, Haohao suddenly said carelessly,
“Mom, today I heard Grandpa Li and Grandma Li talking about introducing Aunt Li to Uncle Yang.”
“Cough—cough—”
Xiao Yang was so shocked by this sudden bombshell that he choked, his face turning red as he coughed uncontrollably.
Lu Huailin quickly handed him water and patted his back.
“Kids don’t know better. He’s talking nonsense.”
Haohao was about to protest that he wasn’t lying, when he saw Gu Yihan signal him to be quiet.
He immediately stopped talking.
After taking a few sips of water, Xiao Yang looked at Gu Yihan and said, “Comrade Gu, my family has already arranged my engagement.”
Gu Yihan nodded. “Oh.”
She wondered why he was telling her this.
Xiao Yang’s heart was pounding.
He ate nervously with his head down, afraid Gu Yihan might take out another bottle of medicine for the Li family.
If that happened, Elder Tang would definitely force him to sell himself to the Li family.
After the meal…
Lu Huailin smiled and invited Xiao Yang to stay a while.
Xiao Yang was so scared that he waved his hands repeatedly. “Comrade Lu, I still have things to do at home. I won’t stay.”
Before anyone could respond, he turned and ran off like he was being chased by ghosts.
Gu Yihan glanced at Haohao, who was sweeping the floor, and asked curiously, “Is your Uncle Yang that shy?”
He hadn’t dared to raise his head during the meal, and Lu Huailin had even picked food for him.
Haohao shook his head like a rattle drum. “No! Uncle Yang is really awesome. He’s not shy at all!”
Lu Huailin smiled while washing dishes. “He was probably scared by what you said.”
Gu Yihan suddenly thought of the Li parents and frowned slightly.
Haohao puffed up his cheeks. He still remembered that his dad hadn’t believed him.
“It really was Grandpa Li and Grandma Li. I wasn’t lying.”
Lu Huailin glanced at his son’s round, angry cheeks and smiled. “Alright, it’s Dad’s fault. I shouldn’t have doubted you.”
Hearing his apology, Haohao grinned.
Before going to bed…
Gu Yihan curled up in Lu Huailin’s arms and said doubtfully, “Why do I feel like Uncle Li and Aunt Li deliberately talked about introducing Sister Yajing to Xiao Yang in front of Haohao?”
It wasn’t that she was being paranoid—it just felt too coincidental.
The institute was huge. The Li couple worked in logistics. Haohao’s activity range was limited, and he usually stayed with Elder Tang.
How could he just happen to overhear them?
Lu Huailin patted her butt and laughed. “Don’t overthink it. It has nothing to do with us.”
“As long as you don’t want to be a matchmaker, no amount of scheming will work.”
Gu Yihan glanced at him without saying anything.
She decided to remind Haohao next week to stay away from the Li parents.
Suddenly, a shadow fell over her.
Lu Huailin bit her lip lightly, and his rough hands ignited sparks across her body.
“Wife, how about some marital intimacy?”
They had been married for years. Seeing how enthusiastic he was, Gu Yihan half-willingly responded, and the two harmonized like a paired melody.
