When Father Zheng heard this, he frowned and fixed his gaze on Er Ya, who was shrinking back timidly.

He thought that Father Lu had found out about Mother Zheng’s plans and had deliberately sent Lu Huailin over to support Lu’s eldest sister.

Turning to Mother Zheng, he said, “Don’t let Er Ya go for now.”

When Mother Zheng heard that Father Zheng wouldn’t let Er Ya go take care of their eldest son, her face instantly turned cold.

A nameless anger surged in her heart. She turned around, slammed the door, and left.

Back in the jeep, Lu Huailin’s eyes flashed with a trace of mockery.

He wondered whether, after Lu’s eldest sister found out that her home was practically being “robbed,” she would still continue swapping caregiving shifts for their mother with Lu’s eldest brother.

Thinking of this, Lu Huailin stepped on the gas and headed straight for where his mother lived.

When he entered the courtyard, he saw his eldest sister diligently washing the trousers his mother had just changed out of.

He took the initiative to greet her with a smile. “Big Sister.”

Hearing his voice, Lu’s eldest sister looked up. When she saw that he had come empty-handed, she frowned slightly.

“Huaiqi, Mom has been paralyzed in bed, and you hardly ever come to see her. Fine, I’ll let that go. But when you finally do come, you come empty-handed! Is that how a son should behave?”

Lu Huailin’s smile froze.

He shot her a cold sidelong glance and went straight into their mother’s room.

When Lu’s eldest sister was scolding Lu Huailin earlier, Mother Lu had already grown so angry that her blood rushed to her head.

She felt her daughter was right—her youngest son was cold-blooded and hard-hearted.

In the four months she had been bedridden, he had come only a handful of times.

Not only did he rarely come, but his wife, Gu Yihan, hadn’t shown her face at all.

The more she thought about it, the angrier she became. She began shouting incoherently, mixed with curses.

As soon as Lu Huailin entered, he saw her mouth twisted to one side, saliva dripping even when she spoke, yet she still insisted on cursing:

“Unfilial son…”

It was obvious how deeply she hated him at this moment.

Lu Huailin carried in a small stool, pretended not to hear, and sat down beside her bed.

He lowered his eyes, his expression unreadable.

“Unfilial son… deserves to die…”

Lu’s eldest sister followed him inside and heard her mother cursing fluently.

A sense of pride rose in her heart. She said smugly, “See? My careful care is paying off.”

“At least Mom’s cursing is getting smoother and smoother.”

Listening to his mother’s five-word-at-a-time curses—calling him heartless, unfilial, deserving of death, saying he’d go to hell—Lu Huailin sneered inwardly.

She cursed so smoothly; clearly, she’d been doing it a lot.

Most likely, his eldest brother hadn’t spared any effort in badmouthing him in front of her either.

Thinking of this, Lu Huailin felt more and more that his mother had lived too comfortably and didn’t understand how cruel people could be.

He spoke casually, “Big Sister, I heard Brother-in-law Zheng Huan broke his leg. And that Aunt Zheng found a pretty young woman in the countryside to take close personal care of him.”

Lu’s eldest sister froze, thinking she had misheard.

She asked incredulously, “What did you just say?”

Lu Huailin calmly repeated himself.

Then he added, “That girl is quite pretty—exactly Brother-in-law’s type.”

The more she listened, the paler Lu’s eldest sister became. She tried hard to control her wildly pounding heart.

She wanted to rush back to the Zheng household and question her mother-in-law.

But her legs felt as heavy as lead.

She staggered with every step, desperately trying to calm herself, constantly giving herself psychological hints.

Lu Huailin must be lying on purpose to anger her.

He just couldn’t stand her being good to Big Brother.

He was deliberately taking revenge with such an obvious lie.

After repeating this to herself several times, she finally managed to steady herself.

Without even saying goodbye to Lu Huailin, she jumped on her bicycle and rushed toward the Zheng home.

When Fang Yi and Lu’s eldest brother returned, they heard Mother Lu wailing and cursing inside the room.

Fang Yi frowned and muttered, “That old thing—why isn’t she dead yet?”

Lu’s eldest brother’s face darkened instantly.

He scolded sharply, “Are you crazy?”

Fang Yi glared at him and snapped back, “Am I wrong?”

“Look at her—eating, drinking, peeing, and pooping in bed. She might as well just drop dead. At least she wouldn’t suffer anymore!”

Lu’s eldest brother turned livid and shot her a glare.

He said coldly, “Idiot. Even just for her forty-plus yuan pension every month, you should be hoping she lives longer.”

Hearing this, Lu Huailin curled his lips into a sarcastic smile.

He pushed the door open and walked out, casting a cold glance at his eldest brother.

Softly, he said, “Big Sister asked me to tell you that she won’t switch shifts with you to take care of Mom anymore.”

After speaking, he couldn’t be bothered to look at them again and left directly.

By the time Lu’s eldest brother and Fang Yi reacted, Lu Huailin had already driven away.

“How could this be?”

“Didn’t Big Sister already agree to switch with us? Why did she suddenly go back on her word?”

Lu’s eldest brother glanced at Fang Yi and said coldly, “How would I know?”

With that, he turned and went back to his room to rest.

To him, his eldest sister’s departure didn’t matter much anyway, since it was Fang Yi who did most of the caregiving.

On the other side., Standing at the entrance of the Zheng household, Lu’s eldest sister took a deep breath, suppressing the uneasiness in her heart.

Then she suddenly pushed the door open.

The Zheng family, who were eating lunch, were startled by the sudden noise.

Seeing her messy hair and panting breath, Mother Zheng frowned.

She said coldly, “Look at you—you look like a madwoman.”

Lu’s eldest sister couldn’t hear her at all.

Her eyes were locked tightly on Er Ya, who was sitting beside Mother Zheng.

She demanded sharply, “Who is she?”

Angered by her tone, Mother Zheng slammed the table and stood up.

Her eyes burned with resentment as she said coldly, “Who she is—what business is it of yours?”

Lu’s eldest sister trembled with anger.

At this moment, she finally believed Lu Huailin’s words.

Her mother-in-law really did want another woman to interfere in her marriage with Zheng Huan.

Thinking of this, she stepped forward, grabbed Er Ya, and dragged her toward the door.

Already feeling guilty and scared, Er Ya panicked at her domineering behavior and clung tightly to the doorframe.

With reddened eyes, she cried to Mother Zheng, “Aunt Zheng, I don’t want to go.”

Before Mother Zheng could respond, Lu’s eldest sister completely lost control.

She raised her arm and slapped Er Ya hard.

“Smack!”

“You little slut! How dare you try to steal my husband! I’ll beat you to death!”

Mother Zheng shouted angrily, “Stop!”

After yelling, she rushed over and shielded Er Ya behind her.

Lu’s eldest sister’s slap hit nothing.

She looked up at Mother Zheng’s protective posture.

Her nose stung, and tears slid uncontrollably down her cheeks.
