Haohua deliberately cleared his throat and raised his voice.
“Dad, I think true friends should be honest with each other. Real friends share both blessings and hardships. If a friend is in trouble, you should help without hesitation.”
Lu Huailin narrowed his eyes slightly and curved his lips into a meaningful smile.
“Share blessings and hardships?”
Haohua didn’t notice his expression and nodded vigorously.
Lu Huailin suddenly laughed.
“Zhao Hu got beaten black and blue by his dad today and cried his lungs out. Since you’re good friends, you should share his hardship.”
After speaking, he stood up, grabbed the feather duster, and walked toward Haohua.
If the kid hadn’t mentioned “sharing hardships,” he almost forgot about his ‘great achievement.’
When Haohua saw his father coming with the feather duster, he screamed.
“Ah!”
He dropped his pencil and started running wildly around the living room.
Gu Yihan froze, not understanding how the father and son had suddenly started fighting.
Smack! Smack!
Two hits landed, and Haohua howled in pain.
“Dad! Dad! I won’t dare again!”
Smack! Smack!
Each time Lu Huailin hit him, Gu Yihan’s heart tightened.
“Waaah…”
Haohua covered his little butt and cried.
“It was Zhao Hu who said they weren’t using their bike anymore, so I did it…”
Lu Huailin rubbed his temples, wishing he could beat this brat senseless.
Gu Yihan finally spoke up.
“What exactly happened?”
Lu Huailin glanced at Haohua and gritted his teeth.
“He and Zhao Hu dismantled Commissar Zhao’s bicycle chain. They made ‘matchstick guns’ with it and competed at school. One misfire almost burned down a classroom.”
Gu Yihan stared at the sobbing Haohua in disbelief.
She opened her mouth.
“He’s so little… how could he make something like that?”
Those things were hard and made of metal. She didn’t believe a child under five could manage it.
Lu Huailin tightened his grip on the feather duster.
“He’s clever now. He bribed older students to help him make them and gave them a cut.”
“They made six. He sold four.”
“With the money, he paid people to buy old chains from the recycling station.”
“He put one back on Commissar Zhao’s bike and used the rest to keep making and selling guns.”
Thinking about how students all over the school now had one, Lu Huailin’s teeth itched with anger.
Gu Yihan was stunned.
She stared at Haohua in disbelief.
When Haohua saw his father approaching again, he screamed.
He covered his butt and ran in circles like his feet were on fire.
While running, he shouted: “Dad, stop hitting! My butt’s going to split in eight!”
Lu Huailin was determined to teach him a lesson.
With one swift move, he caught him.
He pressed Haohua over his leg and slapped his butt.
Smack! Smack!
“Waaah—”
Haohua cried while begging for mercy, tears pouring down.
Gu Yihan couldn’t bear it anymore.
She rushed over and pulled Haohua into her arms.
Haohua smeared his snot and tears all over her shoulder.
He clung to her neck and sobbed.
“Mom, I was wrong…”
Gu Yihan stroked his head gently.
“Haohua, can you tell Mommy why you wanted to sell them?”
His body stiffened, lips pressed tight.
He refused to speak.
Seeing this, she didn’t press further.
She looked at Lu Huailin and negotiated.
“How about we save the beating for next time?”
“Let him off this time?”
Haohua: “…”
Lu Huailin sneered.
“All the illegal money will be confiscated.”
Haohua hiccupped and protested.
“It’s not illegal! I used my brain to earn it!”
Lu Huailin rubbed his palm.
He felt like hitting him again.
Gu Yihan twitched at the corner of her eye.
It was her first time being a mother.
She didn’t know if other kids were like this too—
Crying miserably when beaten,
Then forgetting the pain as soon as they felt safe.
The Next Morning
Gu Yihan opened her eyes and saw Lu Huailin sitting on the bed.
She was startled.
“You took a day off today?”
Lu Huailin bent down and kissed her cheek.
“I have something to do today.”
She half-closed her eyes and nodded.
She didn’t ask.
Military matters were better left unasked.
He handed her clothes and tidied her messy hair.
“I’ll go make breakfast.”
“Mmm.”
She slowly got dressed.
After washing up, she saw Haohua sitting properly like a little adult.
She glanced at the cushion under his butt and sighed softly.
She sat beside him and stroked his hair.
“If you want something in the future, tell Mom or Dad. Don’t try to figure it out yourself. What if you get hurt?”
Haohua pouted, feeling extremely wronged.
He had already secretly replaced the bike chain.
He thought he’d gotten away with it.
It was all Zhao Hu’s fault for setting the eraser on fire.
Otherwise, how would the teacher have found out?
He had hidden the gun so well that no one could find it.
Thinking of the hiding place, his eyes flickered.
Lu Huailin came out carrying breakfast.
Seeing mother and son whispering together, he smiled.
“I made wontons—your favorite.”
When Haohua heard that, he immediately beamed.
“Thank you, Daddy! I love your wontons the most!”
Lu Huailin laughed.
Gu Yihan twitched at the corner of her mouth.
Kids really held no grudges.
Lu Huailin served everyone a bowl.
Haohua blew on his wontons eagerly.
While eating, he looked up at his father with admiration.
“Dad, your wontons are the best I’ve ever had.”
Then he added: “And you’re the best dad in the world. The dad who loves me the most. The greatest dad!”
Lu Huailin grinned from ear to ear.
He patted Haohua’s head.
“Son, I’ll leave you half of that ‘illegal money.’”
Haohua’s eyes lit up.
“Thank you, Dad!”
He leaned over and kissed his father’s cheek.
Excitedly, he said: “Dad, you’re the most handsome and most amazing dad in the world!”
Gu Yihan watched as Lu Huailin was instantly sweet-talked into submission.
She clicked her tongue.
Looks like no matter men or women—Everyone loves hearing nice words.
