In the blink of an eye, May was almost over. The weather in the capital was strange—just the day before, people were still bundled up in layers.

But once May arrived, it was as if summer came instantly. The daytime temperature grew hotter by the day.

Not only was it hot, but the temperature difference between morning and night was especially large. As a result, Haohua had been coughing slightly these past few days.

After buying breakfast, Lu Huailin returned home and saw Gu Yihan cooking something in the kitchen. He thought she was making breakfast.

Smiling, he called out, “Wife, I brought breakfast back.”

Gu Yihan gave a soft “Mm” and replied, “Huailin, go wake Haohua up for breakfast.”

“Mom, I’m already up!”

Haohua shouted toward the kitchen as he came downstairs.

Lu Huailin walked into the kitchen and gently wrapped his arms around his wife’s waist from behind.

Resting his chin on her shoulder, he looked at the boiling pear water in the pot.

Surprised, he asked, “Wife, why did you suddenly make rock sugar pear soup?”

Gu Yihan turned her head and shot him a glare. “Didn’t you hear Haohua coughing last night?”

Hearing this, Lu Huailin awkwardly rubbed his nose and said softly, “Wife, boys don’t need to be spoiled so much.”

Gu Yihan rolled her eyes at him. She picked up a spoon and tasted it. The sweet pear soup was delicious—Haohua would definitely like it.

The family sat together for breakfast.

Lu Huailin said, “Wife, I’m going to Mom’s place today. Are you coming?”

Gu Yihan paused while drinking her porridge. Her mother-in-law had been discharged from the hospital a month ago, and it wouldn’t be good for her, as a daughter-in-law, to avoid visiting for so long.

After thinking for a moment, she nodded. “It’s the weekend. I’ll go with you.”

After finishing breakfast, Haohua sipped the sweet pear soup and said in a childish voice, “Mom, I want to go to Grandpa’s house.”

Gu Yihan glanced at Lu Huailin and said, “Haohua wants to go to Dad’s place.”

“Alright. We’ll send him to Dad’s first, then go to the department store to buy some things, and after that, we’ll visit Mom.”

When Haohua heard this, he shouted excitedly, “Yay! Going to Grandpa’s!”

Gu Yihan looked at him with gentle eyes. He was still young and didn’t understand adult complications.

But he could keenly sense who liked him and who didn’t.

Lu Family Home, Capital City

As soon as Lu Huailin parked the car, Haohua jumped out eagerly and rushed into Father Lu’s arms.

Father Lu bent down and picked him up, laughing. “Haohua, did you miss Grandpa?”

“Yes!”

His clear, childish answer made Father Lu laugh out loud.

“Dad, my wife and I are going to Mom’s place. Haohua will—”

Before Lu Huailin could finish, Father Lu waved impatiently. “Hurry up and go. Don’t delay me bonding with my eldest grandson.”

With that, he carried Haohua away without looking back.

He planned to go show the child to Old Leng, so that man would stop mocking him for being lonely.

Haohua waved goodbye to his parents from Grandpa’s shoulder.

Gu Yihan and Lu Huailin exchanged smiles.

Department Store

Gu Yihan bought two bottles of malted milk drink, two cans of luncheon meat, and two bottles of honey.

Seeing his wife walk back and forth in the daily necessities area several times, Lu Huailin joked, “Wife, since you’re here, why don’t you buy something for yourself too?”

Gu Yihan shook her head. “I can buy everything in the residential compound. No need to get it here.”

Then she went to the pastry counter and bought some sponge cakes.

After shopping, Lu Huailin carried the net bag and followed her toward the exit.

“Xiaohan, what brings you to the city?”

Gu Yihan looked up and saw Fu Ling walking toward her with a smile.

“Sister Ling, what a coincidence. You’re shopping too?”

“The inner liner of my thermos broke.”

Gu Yihan was about to reply when someone beside her bumped into her, making her stumble. She nearly fell, but Lu Huailin caught her in time.

Fu Ling glanced at the unfamiliar woman who had fallen and helped her up. “Comrade, are you alright?”

Lu Huailin looked at his wife worriedly. “Wife, does your foot hurt?”

He had seen her twist her ankle.

Gu Yihan carefully moved her ankle and felt no pain.

She smiled at him. “It’s fine. I’m not hurt.”

Then she looked at the person who had bumped into her—and her pupils shrank.

She rushed forward and grabbed the woman’s arm.

Seeing Li Yajing’s disheveled hair and swollen, red face, anger surged in her heart.

“Sister Yajing, who hit you?”

Li Yajing lifted her head in a daze. When she recognized Gu Yihan, she didn’t explain anything.

She threw herself into her arms and burst into loud sobs.

All the fear and helplessness she had bottled up for days poured out.

Gu Yihan didn’t ask any more questions. She simply patted her back gently in silent comfort.

Fu Ling glanced at the crying Li Yajing, met Gu Yihan’s worried gaze, nodded to her, and left first.

Lu Huailin checked his watch and reminded, “Wife, it’s getting late.”

Hearing this, Li Yajing pulled away, eyes red.

She choked, “Xiaohan, you go ahead. I’ll go back first.”

She turned to leave.

Gu Yihan quickly grabbed her arm. “Sister Yajing, did Secretary Chang hit you?”

Before Li Yajing could answer, a sharp voice rang out: “Li Yajing, get back here right now!”

Hearing Chang Mother’s voice, Li Yajing covered her head and hid behind Gu Yihan, trembling like a leaf.

She kept crying, “Don’t hit me… don’t hit me…”

Gu Yihan froze. She turned and looked at Li Yajing crouching behind her, her nose stinging.

It had only been a few months. How had she become like this?

Chang Mother held a wooden measuring ruler in her hand. Without even glancing at Gu Yihan, she fixed her gaze on the trembling Li Yajing.

Grinding her teeth, she said, “How many times have I told you? Don’t use family money to support your natal family with overseas connections!”

“You never listen. Looks like I didn’t beat you hard enough!”

She raised the ruler and swung it toward Li Yajing’s face.

Gu Yihan’s expression changed. She grabbed Chang Mother’s wrist and shouted angrily, “What right do you have to hit someone?”

Chang Mother narrowed her eyes and sized Gu Yihan up. Seeing her plain cotton clothes, disdain flashed in her eyes.

She said coldly, “I’m beating my own daughter-in-law. What business is it of yours?”
