The Next Day

Beijing Municipal Hospital

Fang Yi roughly wiped Mother Lu’s face and hands with a towel while muttering curses under her breath.

“Why didn’t you just die when you fell?”

“Then I wouldn’t have to clean up your poop and pee every day!”

Hearing this, Eldest Brother Lu frowned and scolded her harshly:

“Fang Yi, how can you talk like that?”

“She’s my mother. Isn’t it only right for you, as her daughter-in-law, to take care of her?”

“Do you want to be like Gu Yihan and ignore her completely?”

After speaking, his eyes casually swept toward the ward door.

Fang Yi glanced at Eldest Brother Lu, who was sitting motionless on the chair, curled her lips, and said:

“Am I wrong?”

“She’s lying here half-dead. In the end, who’s the one suffering? Isn’t it me?”

Seeing her words becoming more and more unpleasant, Eldest Brother Lu clenched his teeth, stood up abruptly, and strode over to her.

He raised his arm—

Slap!

A loud slap landed on her face.

Fang Yi’s mind went blank. She stared at him in shock.

“You actually dared to hit me?”

Eldest Brother Lu clenched his fists. From the corner of his eye, he saw Eldest Sister Lu standing at the door eavesdropping.

He roared angrily:

“Fang Yi, if you don’t take good care of my mother, I’ll beat you to death!”

Fang Yi couldn’t see or hear anything at that moment. Her head buzzed.

She and Lu Huaixu shared the same bed—when had he ever been this filial?

Something was wrong.

Absolutely wrong.

She looked up suspiciously and saw his eyes twitching wildly, as if signaling her.

She immediately understood.

Covering her face with both hands, she sobbed:

“Wuwu… my life is so bitter…”

“We have no jobs and no house now. How can we take care of Mom?”

“Do you want her to starve with us?”

“Besides, I can’t bear to see her suffer in bed like this.”

“A perfectly good person, suddenly paralyzed…”

“Lying alone in this empty hospital, with no one to care for her. My heart aches!”

Hearing this, Eldest Brother Lu instantly put on a sorrowful expression.

With guilt in his voice, he said deeply:

“Wife, don’t worry. As long as I have one bite to eat, you and Mom will have something to drink.”
“Even if I have to beg from door to door, I won’t let you two go hungry.”

Fang Yi’s lips twitched.

Then she steeled herself and pinched her thigh hard. With a loud cry, she threw herself into his arms and wailed.

Her crying sounded as miserable as possible.

Eldest Brother Lu quickly patted her shoulder and said in a gentle, affected tone:

“Mom raised me with her own hands, cleaning my poop and pee. Now it’s my turn to repay her.”

Mother Lu, lying on the bed, was deeply moved by her eldest son’s words. Tears streamed down her temples and soaked the pillow.

Her mouth opened and closed as she made “ah ah” sounds.

Just then, a long sigh sounded.

“Little Brother, Sister-in-law, don’t worry.”

Fang Yi seemed startled by the sudden voice. She quickly pulled away from Eldest Brother Lu, tidied her hair, and looked up embarrassedly.

“Eldest Sister, you’re here.”

Eldest Sister Lu nodded and hummed softly. Her gaze lingered on Fang Yi’s swollen eyes for a moment.

Then she said:

“Sister-in-law, don’t worry. Mom doesn’t just have you—she has me too.”

“I’m her daughter. I won’t abandon her.”

After speaking, she took out two employment forms from her handbag and handed them to Eldest Brother Lu.

“Little Brother, your and Sister-in-law’s job arrangements are settled.”

Fang Yi’s pupils instantly widened. She anxiously looked at Eldest Brother Lu, eager to know what job had been arranged for her.

He didn’t take them right away. Instead, he looked at Eldest Sister Lu worriedly and asked softly:

“Eldest Sister, did Uncle and Aunt Zheng make things difficult for you?”

Feeling his concern, Eldest Sister Lu felt warm inside. She stepped forward and stuffed the forms into his hands.

“Don’t worry. My in-laws are kind people. They didn’t give me any trouble.”

Eldest Brother Lu glanced at the top form.

It was for an administrative post in the Supply Department of the steel factory.

He looked up in disbelief.

“Eldest Sister, is this real?”

The Supply Department held real power, managing all material distribution. Without strong connections, it was impossible to get in.

Eldest Sister Lu smiled casually.

“This job was originally meant for your Fourth Sister-in-law.”

“But you’re in a hurry, so I gave it to you first.”

Fang Yi took the other form.

It was a job in the cafeteria of the Logistics Department.

Though less prestigious than being a department store clerk, it came with plenty of perks.

The couple exchanged excited looks and repeatedly thanked Eldest Sister Lu.

She smiled, then tightly held Mother Lu’s hand. Seeing the pillow soaked with tears, her nose stung, and she nearly cried.

Her heart felt as if it were being tightly squeezed in pain.

When Mother Lu saw her, she began shouting “ah ah ah,” drool flowing from the corner of her mouth.

Eldest Sister Lu quickly wiped it away gently with a handkerchief.

“Go… home…”

She sniffed, holding back tears.

“Mom, I borrowed a handcart. Later, I’ll have your eldest son take you home.”

Mother Lu rolled her eyes and struggled to say:

“Home…”

Fang Yi sighed.

“If only the younger brother were here.”

Eldest Sister Lu’s face darkened instantly. She had thought of it too.

If Lu Huailin were here, driving Mother Lu back would be much easier.

Eldest Brother Lu glared at Fang Yi.

“Stop talking nonsense. Little Brother is a division commander now. How could he have that much time?”

“I’m just stating facts,” Fang Yi retorted.

“Mom didn’t only give birth to you and Eldest Sister.”

“As long as Lu Huailin is her son, he has the duty to be filial!”

Eldest Sister Lu glanced at Fang Yi coolly.

Even if Lu Huailin were unfilial, he was still her younger brother. It wasn’t Fang Yi’s place to criticize him.

“Enough. Stop complaining.”

“Huailin is different from us. He sacrifices his small family for the greater good. He’s a soldier.”

Seeing that Eldest Sister Lu didn’t side with her, Fang Yi’s eyes flashed with coldness.

She said coldly:

“I’ve asked around. Mom’s been hospitalized so long, and he only came once.”

“Even if he’s busy, couldn’t his wife, Gu Yihan, come?”

“She hasn’t visited even once.”

Hearing this, Eldest Sister Lu felt a trace of dissatisfaction toward Gu Yihan and thought about finding time to go to the military family compound to scold her.
