Dawn had just begun to break.
Gu Yihan was woken up by the heat. Through the light filtering in from the window, she saw the handsome face right in front of her.
The corner of her mouth twitched helplessly.
She had no idea what had gotten into Lu Huailin last night. He had tossed and turned, tormenting her endlessly, and after it was over, he’d held her tightly as if afraid she might run away.
He wrapped her in his arms so firmly that she felt like she’d spent the whole night squatting in front of a stove—roasted until she was hot and thirsty.
Seeing that he was sleeping soundly, Gu Yihan could only pat his cheek and whisper, “Lu Huailin, wake up. I’m about to die of heat.”
Lu Huailin subconsciously grabbed his wife’s hand and muttered drowsily, “It’s good to be warm. That way your hands and feet won’t get cold.”
Hearing this, Gu Yihan felt warmth spread through her heart. Even half-asleep, he still remembered that her hands and feet always got icy in winter.
Actually, it wasn’t just her hands and feet—her backside got cold too.
But since Lu Huailin liked sleeping face-to-face with her, he never noticed.
Seeing that he had fallen asleep again, she said helplessly, “Wake up. I’m going to die of thirst.”
Hearing her voice again, Lu Huailin slowly opened his sleepy eyes.
“Wife, why are you up so early?”
Gu Yihan shot him an annoyed look.
He still had the nerve to ask. Being hugged by a human furnace and unable to move, it was already a miracle she’d lasted this long.
“I want some water.”
“Oh, water? I’ll get it for you.”
The moment he heard she was thirsty, Lu Huailin became fully awake. He jumped out of bed and quickly put on his clothes.
Gu Yihan turned on the light and glanced at the clock. It was already past six.
Lu Huailin poured half a mug of hot water into an enamel cup, swirled it around to cool it, then handed it to her with a smile.
“Here, wife.”
Gu Yihan took it and gulped it down in one go. Only then did the burning feeling in her chest fade.
“Wife, go back to sleep. I’ll go wake Haohao.”
Gu Yihan froze, thinking she’d misheard.
“You’re going to wake Haohao?”
Lu Huailin placed the empty cup on the vanity and nodded.
“He’s already four. From now on, he can train in the mornings with me.”
Before she could reply, he turned and walked toward Haohao’s room.
Gu Yihan hurriedly got dressed and followed him.
“Isn’t it too early? Won’t it affect his growth?”
“No. I started training with my dad when I was four. Look at me—tall and strong, right?”
Lu Huailin said with a laugh as he helped the half-asleep Haohao put on his clothes.
“Mom, Dad, are we setting off firecrackers?”
Haohao rubbed his eyes and glanced at the sky outside.
He thought it was like New Year’s Eve, when they got up at midnight to set off firecrackers and eat dumplings.
Lu Huailin pinched his chubby cheek and smiled.
“No. From now on, you’ll exercise with Dad every morning, then go buy breakfast at the canteen, and go to school by yourself.”
Gu Yihan felt as if she’d just heard the biggest joke in the world.
“You mean… you want Haohao to do all that by himself?”
“Yes. He’s not little anymore. He needs to learn how to take care of himself.”
Starting now would prepare him for future group training in the compound, so he wouldn’t be scolded for being helpless.
Gu Yihan’s eyes widened in disbelief.
“I don’t agree!”
She rushed forward, picked up Haohao, and said coldly, “How old is he? You want him to buy breakfast alone and go to school alone?”
Lu Huailin was stunned by her intense reaction.
After thinking for a moment, he explained patiently, “Wife, Haohao isn’t that small anymore. Kids his age in the compound already help out at home. Take Zhao Hu next door—he can buy breakfast by himself. He can even wash his underwear and socks. But our Haohao, because we have a washing machine, has never even touched laundry water.”
Their son had been raised too delicately by his wife.
Holding Haohao, Gu Yihan stepped back two steps and shook her head.
“I don’t mind him training with you. But I won’t agree to letting such a young child buy food and go to school alone!”
She wasn’t being overly sensitive.
She had grown up in an orphanage and had heard too many stories about children being kidnapped when their parents looked away for just a moment.
Especially in this era, human traffickers were rampant.
Some stolen children were lucky and sold to decent families.
Others were raised for a few years, crippled, and then sent to beg at train stations and crowded places.
Haohao was her only child. How could she let him out of her sight?
Seeing her as if facing a great enemy, Lu Huailin felt puzzled.
He softened his tone.
“Wife, can we discuss this later? It’s getting late. I’ll take Haohao out for a run. Zhao Hu should be up too. They can go together.”
Gu Yihan hugged Haohao tightly and said nothing.
When Haohao heard Zhao Hu’s name, his eyes lit up.
He wrapped his chubby arms around his mother’s neck and kissed her cheek.
In a sweet, childish voice, he coaxed her,
“Mom, Haohao likes watching Dad practice boxing. When I grow up, I want to be a hero like Dad and lead lots of soldier uncles. Please let me go with Dad.”
Looking into her son’s clear eyes, Gu Yihan felt her heart ache.
This little brat couldn’t even tell right from wrong—he was siding with his father.
Lu Huailin gave Haohao an approving look.
Then he smiled and wrapped his arms around both of them.
Leaning close to her ear, he whispered, “Wife, you can secretly follow behind him.”
Gu Yihan looked up at him and forced a faint smile.
She didn’t want Haohao to follow the path of a soldier.
It was too dangerous, and it required constant self-sacrifice and selflessness.
She was just an ordinary mother. All she wanted was for her child to grow up happy and safe.
Even if he lived an ordinary, unremarkable life, that would be enough.
But Lu Huailin clearly thought differently.
He wanted Haohao to become a soldier like him and inherit the military’s resources and legacy.
