The next day—
Lu Huailin, Zhao Xu, and Gao Guoqiang seemed to have planned it in advance as they opened the courtyard gate together.
They exchanged glances. When Gao Guoqiang noticed the dark circles under Zhao Xu’s eyes, he laughed and teased him.
“Old Zhao, you’re really still going strong!”
“I just wonder if your back can handle it.”
Zhao Xu shot him a glare and replied irritably, “You think everyone’s as energetic as you?”
Then he looked at Lu Huailin with a resentful expression and complained, “Commander Lu, you’ve really dragged me into trouble.”
Lu Huailin looked at him in surprise. “When did I ever trick you?”
“My wife is lazier than ever now. First, she stopped washing my underwear. Then she stopped washing my socks. Now she won’t even wash my clothes!”
Zhao Xu complained indignantly, “It’s all your fault. If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have ended up washing my own clothes. She said I either have to be like you and cook every day, or wash clothes. I argued with her for ages before she finally agreed that I’d only wash my own clothes.”
“Auntie Zhang even wanted me to wash hers and our grandson’s clothes too.”
“Because you’re so hardworking, my wife compares me to you every day!”
Lu Huailin walked as he glanced sideways at Zhao Xu and said calmly, “Shouldn’t you wash your own clothes anyway?”
Zhao Xu thought for a moment, then leaned closer and whispered, “You wash your own clothes too?”
Lu Huailin looked at him in confusion, not understanding why washing clothes was worth complaining about.
“We’re soldiers. We exercise a lot. After wearing socks for a day, they’re stiff and smelly by bedtime. How can you let your wife wash that for you?”
Gao Guoqiang and Zhao Xu exchanged glances and said in unison with a grin, “Wash them yourself.”
Lu Huailin glanced at Zhao Xu coldly. He was lazy and still wanted to blame others.
Without indulging him, he said, “Before you married, were you running around naked? Didn’t you wash your own clothes back then? Now that you’re married, has that ability degenerated?”
Zhao Xu pursed his lips and said nothing.
He didn’t agree with Lu Huailin. If wives didn’t cook or wash clothes, then what was the point of marrying them?
Meanwhile—
During recess, Haohao and Zhao Hu met in the restroom.
“Haohao, take this!” Zhao Hu shouted and lunged at him.
Haohao dodged quickly. Zhao Hu couldn’t stop himself and fell flat on the ground with a thud.
Haohao covered his mouth with his chubby hand and giggled.
Zhao Hu quickly got up and ran over.
“You little traitor! Tattletale!” he yelled.
Haohao looked at him in confusion and argued back, “We’re good brothers. We share happiness and hardships!”
He refused to admit he was a tattletale.
Zhao Hu was furious. He felt Haohao had done it on purpose.
Neither of them would give in, and soon they started fighting wildly.
Though Haohao was younger, he was strong. He held his own against Zhao Hu, who was more than a year older.
When Zhao Hu got tired, Haohao seized the chance and punched him in the face several times.
Only when other children called Teacher Wang did the two little troublemakers stop.
Teacher Wang saw the light bruises on Zhao Hu’s face. Though not serious, she was very angry.
She dragged the two stubborn little boys into the office and called their parents.
When Gu Yihan received the call saying Haohao had been in a fight, she was badly frightened and thought he was seriously hurt.
Without asking more, she hung up and ran straight to the gate.
Auntie Zhang called after her, “Xiaohan, the door isn’t locked!”
Gu Yihan waved while running. “Auntie, there’s no time! I have to get to school!”
Auntie Zhang froze for a moment and muttered, “Could it be Haohao who fought with that brat?”
Thinking of this, she strolled slowly toward the school.
In the school office—
Gu Yihan hurried in, greeted the teacher, and went straight to Haohao.
Seeing that he was only dirty-faced and had no obvious injuries, she finally relaxed.
Teacher Wang frowned when she saw Gu Yihan only caring about her own child.
“Comrade Gu, Lu Chenhao hit too hard. Look, Zhao Hu’s face is bruised.”
“Zhao Hu?”
Gu Yihan thought she had misheard. She quickly went over to him and crouched down.
Lifting his little head, she saw the faint bruises on his chubby cheeks.
Softly, she asked, “Huzi, does it hurt?”
Zhao Hu puffed out his cheeks and said stubbornly, “It doesn’t hurt.”
Gu Yihan twitched her lips slightly and whispered, “Tell Auntie, why did you two fight?”
She liked straightforward Zhao Hu and didn’t think they’d fight without reason.
Teacher Wang secretly relaxed when she saw how gentle Gu Yihan was.
She was afraid of encountering unreasonable parents who would blame everything on teachers.
Zhao Hu felt embarrassed. He couldn’t believe he had lost to someone younger.
Seeing him hesitate, Haohao stepped forward and grabbed Gu Yihan’s hand.
“Mom, he hit me first! I only fought back!”
Zhao Hu immediately retorted, “You tattled first, you snitch!”
“That’s not tattling! I was helping you correct your mistakes!”
“You just wanted me to get beaten!”
“Mom, didn’t you say blowing up the latrine pit was wrong?”
Haohao dragged Gu Yihan into it.
He believed good friends should be fair.
If he got punished, Zhao Hu should too.
Gu Yihan looked at Haohao’s innocent face and got a headache.
She couldn’t understand how he had suddenly become such a little schemer.
“Oh, looks like no one’s seriously hurt.”
Auntie Zhang arrived late and stood at the door, smiling.
Zhao Hu ran over and complained, “Grandma, Haohao hit me!”
Auntie Zhang slapped his head lightly. “You’re so big and still can’t beat someone younger!”
Then she smiled at Gu Yihan. “Boys build friendships through fights. We parents don’t need to interfere too much.”
“In a few days, they’ll be brothers again.”
Gu Yihan snapped out of it and nodded with a smile. “They usually get along very well.”
Teacher Wang, seeing that the parents had handled it, stood up.
She took Haohao’s hand and led him to Zhao Hu.
Gently, she said, “Zhao Hu, you were wrong to hit Lu Chenhao first. You should apologize.”
Zhao Hu lowered his head and said softly, “I’m sorry.”
Haohao thought for a moment, then held Zhao Hu’s hand.
In his childish voice, he said, “Brother Zhao Hu, I’m sorry too. I shouldn’t have told on you to Uncle Zhao.”
“Really?”
“You admit you were wrong?”
Haohao looked at him seriously. “Really.”
Zhao Hu was instantly appeased. He grinned, held Haohao’s hand tightly, and stood up straight.
Proudly, he said, “I forgive you.”
