When Lu Huailin came back carrying two roast ducks, he saw his wife and Haohao hopping on one leg in the courtyard, landing with both feet.
He walked over in confusion, looked at the grid drawn on the ground, and asked, puzzled, “What are you two doing?”
Gu Yihan looked up at him and smiled. “Playing a game with Haohao. Didn’t you play this when you were little?”
Lu Huailin watched as Haohao tossed the beanbag onto the square marked with the number two and hopped over on one leg.
Wobbling as he controlled his short little legs, Haohao picked up the beanbag and continued jumping.
“I didn’t play this before,” Lu Huailin said. “But this game is pretty good. It helps train his leg strength and balance.”
Gu Yihan rolled her eyes at him.
It was just hopscotch, and he was already thinking about physical training.
When she was little in the orphanage, she played this every day and never became especially strong.
After finishing the game, Haohao immediately dropped the beanbag and ran over to Lu Huailin, hugging his leg.
In his soft, childish voice, he asked, “Daddy, did you see Grandpa?”
Gu Yihan gently stroked Haohao’s soft hair and looked at Lu Huailin.
Smiling, she said, “Haohao always remembers the grandpa who gives him birthday presents every year.”
Haohao nodded eagerly. “Daddy, when will you take me to see Grandpa?”
Lu Huailin chuckled, bent down, and picked Haohao up with one hand.
“When Grandpa isn’t busy anymore, he’ll come see you.”
Then he lifted the roast duck in his right hand.
“This is the roast duck Grandpa specially bought for you.”
Haohao grinned, showing a row of neat baby teeth. He didn’t even ask when Grandpa would come anymore.
He hugged the roast duck and turned to Gu Yihan.
“Mom, Grandpa gave this to Haohao!”
Gu Yihan smiled and shook her head. “Come on, let’s go inside and eat.”
Lu Huailin carried Haohao into the living room, while Gu Yihan went into the kitchen to prepare dinner.
“Oh right,” Lu Huailin said, “I’m planning to invite the political commissar, the chief of staff, and a few regimental commanders over for dinner.”
“When do you think is suitable?”
Gu Yihan thought for a moment. “Tomorrow night. I’ll go to the service station tomorrow morning to buy some liquor and soda. We’ll eat one duck today and save the other for tomorrow.”
Lu Huailin nodded. “Okay.”
Then he went to the table to carve the roast duck.
Before going to bed, after Haohao had fallen asleep, Gu Yihan looked at Lu Huailin, who was half-lying on the bed reading.
She asked softly, “When you went home today, did Mom say anything?”
Lu Huailin put down his book and sighed. “Mom’s leg is crippled.”
Gu Yihan knew he was deliberately changing the subject. Her eyes turned slightly.
“Did she say anything else?”
Seeing that his wife was determined to get to the bottom of it, Lu Huailin replied casually,
“She said we’re both busy and that she wants to help take care of Haohao.”
Gu Yihan froze for a moment, then immediately thought: That’s like a weasel paying respects to a chicken—no good intentions.
“I don’t agree!”
Seeing his slightly bristling wife, Lu Huailin smiled.
“Don’t worry. I already refused.”
Gu Yihan was still uneasy. She didn’t believe her mother-in-law would give up so easily.
Who knew what bad idea she was cooking up, trying to keep Haohao by her side openly?
In this era, with the status of mother-in-law or grandmother, it was too easy to interfere.
Thinking of this, she suddenly raised her head and stared straight at Lu Huailin.
She warned him, “Lu Huailin, if you dare agree to Mom’s conditions without my consent, don’t blame me for divorcing you!”
Lu Huailin didn’t hear anything else clearly—only the word “divorce.”
His face darkened instantly.
Gritting his teeth, he said, “Give up that thought! I’ll never divorce you in this lifetime!”
Gu Yihan jumped up on the bed at once and looked down at him.
Coldly, she said, “If you don’t want a divorce, fine. But from now on, anything your mom says about me or Haohao, you must discuss it with me first! And any conversation between you two that involves me or Haohao—you must tell me everything! And most importantly, Haohao must never live with her!”
Lu Huailin looked up at her coldly, almost furious.
Was Haohao not his son too?
Didn’t he know his mother and his wife didn’t get along?
How could he possibly let Haohao be caught between them?
Seeing him silent, Gu Yihan thought he disagreed. Her anger surged.
Without thinking, she jumped off the bed, opened the wardrobe, grabbed a quilt, and walked out.
Lu Huailin followed her in confusion.
When he saw her spreading the quilt on the small bedroom bed, he rushed over and picked it up.
“Wife, what are you doing?”
Gu Yihan didn’t even look at him. She snatched the quilt back.
“Can’t you see? I’m sleeping separately from you! From now on, Haohao and I will sleep together.”
Lu Huailin was stunned.
He had never seen a couple sleep in separate beds.
Even when his parents quarreled, they never did that.
Why was it happening to him?
Gu Yihan angrily made the bed and said, “Now I see clearly—no matter what, your mom is more important than me and our son combined!”
Lu Huailin stared at her without blinking.
This was the first time they had quarreled since marriage.
No—this was her arguing alone.
And over something completely imaginary.
After finishing the bed, Gu Yihan turned to pick up Haohao.
Suddenly, Lu Huailin grabbed her wrist and lifted her up around the waist.
Through clenched teeth, he said, “Since the bed is ready, don’t waste it!”
He threw her onto the bed.
Before she could react, he leaned down and pressed against her, sealing her lips with his.
Gu Yihan pushed at him weakly.
“Mmm…”
Between breaths, she patted his chest, tears in her eyes.
“Don’t touch me! To you, Haohao and I are nothing!”
Seeing her still obsessed with this imaginary issue, Lu Huailin’s temples throbbed with anger.
He leaned close to her ear and said through clenched teeth,
“You little heartless thing! You really don’t trust me that much? We only have Haohao. How could I bear to let him leave our side?”
“Really?” she asked softly.
Lu Huailin looked at her flushed face, his gaze growing deeper.
In a low voice, he said, “When has your man ever lied to you?”
Without giving her a chance to speak, he moved forward and kissed her again, silencing her protest.
