When Grandma Gu heard that she was only being given two days, her pupils shrank. Her lips trembled as she said, “I’m not leaving.”
Qin Shou couldn’t help laughing when he heard her words.
“As long as I report you to the police for not having a letter of introduction, whether you want to leave or not won’t be up to you anymore!”
Grandma Gu began trembling all over. Her face turned pale, and she couldn’t say a word.
Seeing this, Qin Shou thought about how she had taken care of his son, Kang Long, for two years. He didn’t want to make things too ugly in front of the neighbors in the courtyard.
So his tone softened a little.
“Think it over carefully. You’d better leave soon. Even if you don’t, I won’t give you any living expenses anymore!”
“I don’t need your living expenses,” Grandma Gu said anxiously.
“Oh? You have money?” Qin Shou raised his eyebrows.
“My granddaughter gives me money every month. I don’t need to spend yours.”
“I’m only staying at your place temporarily.”
Qin Shou narrowed his eyes. The bit of sympathy he had just felt instantly disappeared.
That old hag—she’d been living in his house for so long and still had private savings.
So every month, she ate his food and used his things, while the money Gu Yihan gave her was all being saved up.
Thinking of this, he stared at her sharply and said coldly, “Temporarily?”
“You’ve really planned this well. I could rent this place out for more than five yuan a month. Why should I let you stay for free?”
Grandma Gu thought for a moment. She didn’t know when she would be able to return to the military family compound.
So she said, “I’ll cook for you and pick up and drop off Kang Long every day. Let that count as rent.”
Qin Shou glanced at her coldly.
He knew exactly what she was thinking—she wanted to move back to the military compound.
Pure wishful thinking.
Then he thought: Since she wasn’t using his money, he might as well let her stay for now.
Once he found where she hid her money, he’d kick her out.
“Fine. You can stay for now.”
With that, Qin Shou turned and went back to his bedroom.
Grandma Gu stood in the living room, staring blankly at the simple wooden plank bed in the corner.
A wave of sorrow surged in her heart.
After struggling her whole life, she still didn’t have a place of her own.
She wanted to go back to the military compound.
She wanted to live with her little grandson.
She wanted a life without worrying about food and clothing.
She even dreamed that one day her granddaughter would suddenly appear, grab her hand, and say, “Grandma, come home with me.”
Thinking about it, she walked over to the simple bed and lay down.
Tears slid down from the corners of her eyes.
She regretted it.
Why did she care so much about Gu Meng’s life and death, when she wasn’t even that fond of her?
Why did she test her position in her granddaughter’s heart?
In the Bedroom, listening to Grandma Gu’s muffled sobbing, Qin Shou sneered.
How hypocritical.
Did she really think Gu Yihan and Lu Huailin treated her like a real elder?
In reality, the couple only took care of her because of public opinion.
It was soon the weekend.
While tapping an egg on the table, Gu Yihan said, “Li Yajing is getting married today. I’ll take Haohao with me.”
Lu Huailin was sitting on the sofa reading a newspaper. Hearing her, he looked up, worry flashing in his eyes.
“No need. Let Haohao stay home. I’ll watch him.”
Gu Yihan swallowed her egg and took a sip of milk.
“He’s at the compound every day and hardly sees anyone. It’d be good to take him out for a day and let him see something lively.”
Lu Huailin chuckled and stood up, walking over to her. He placed his hands on her shoulders from behind.
“Alright, wife. Listen to me. Let Haohao stay home.”
She tilted her head up and looked at his firm, handsome face.
“Why? You don’t want him to go out with me?”
“Mom, where are you going?” Haohao ran in on his short legs and asked excitedly.
Lu Huailin ignored him and leaned down to kiss Gu Yihan’s head.
“I’m doing this for your sake.”
Gu Yihan looked at him in confusion.
“There’ll be a lot of people today. Haohao is still young. Can you watch him every second?”
“If he accidentally gets hurt, won’t you be the one feeling distressed?”
Gu Yihan lowered her head and thought about it.
That made sense.
Haohao saw that his dad had blocked his chance to go out in just a few words and hurried over.
“Mom, I’m very obedient. I won’t get hurt.”
Lu Huailin bent down and lifted him onto his shoulder.
“You little brat, you’re everywhere.”
“Isn’t it good to stay home with Dad?”
“If you go with Mom, I’ll be all alone. So lonely.”
“Can you bear to let Dad secretly cry at home?”
Haohao looked at Gu Yihan, then at Lu Huailin, feeling torn.
He wanted to go out with Mom.
But he was worried Dad would cry at home.
After thinking about it, he decided that Mom would have people with her, but Dad only had him.
So he made a serious decision.
“Dad, don’t worry. I’ll stay with you.”
Lu Huailin nodded with a smile.
Then he turned to Gu Yihan and urged, “Wife, hurry up and go. I’ve got things covered here.”
Gu Yihan looked at Haohao, who had been easily fooled, and felt speechless.
She looked at Lu Huailin suspiciously.
Why did he seem so strange today?
It was just taking Haohao out—she’d done it before. Why was he making such a fuss?
Then she felt she was overthinking.
“Alright, I’m going.”
“I’ll walk you to the door.”
She laughed. “I’m not leaving forever. Why see me off?”
Lu Huailin ignored her and stubbornly escorted her to the door with Haohao in his arms.
“Come back right after lunch. Don’t stay too long.”
“Don’t wander around elsewhere either. Don’t—”
“Stop!” Gu Yihan cut him off.
“Is something wrong with you?”
“You’re treating me like I’ve never been outside before.”
He sighed. “I’m just worried about your safety.”
She glanced at him suspiciously, then rode off on her bicycle.
At some point, He Shengli had come up behind Lu Huailin.
He glanced at Haohao in his arms and smiled slightly.
Haohao widened his eyes and patted Lu Huailin’s face.
“Dad, Uncle He is here!”
Lu Huailin withdrew his gaze from his departing wife.
He turned to He Shengli, narrowed his eyes, and asked sharply: “How are the arrangements?”
He Shengli immediately stood at attention and saluted.
“Don’t worry, Commander. Everyone is in position!”
“We guarantee that Sister-in-law won’t suffer even the slightest harm.”
