“Mom, I’m back!” Haohuo shouted excitedly, running in while waving his arms.
Gu Yihan walked out of the living room and looked at the father and son, smiling. “Why are you two so happy today?”
Haohuo shook the little red flower and plastic pencil case in his hand. “Mom, these are rewards from my teacher!”
Hearing this, Gu Yihan quickly bent down, picked him up, and kissed his smooth, tender cheek.
Smiling, she said, “Wow, our little man is amazing!”
Praised by his mom, Haohuo was overjoyed. He lifted his little head and kissed her cheek in return.
Gu Yihan burst out laughing. “Look at you—already so polite, even know how to return the favor!”
Lu Huailin stood nearby, watching the two with a smile in his eyes.
“Come on, go inside. It’s cold out here,” he urged.
Gu Yihan nodded and carried Haohuo to the dining table. “I made little fish wontons especially for you today.”
Haohuo grinned happily.
As soon as his bottom touched the bench, his chubby little hand impatiently grabbed the spoon, waiting for Lu Huailin to serve him wontons.
After dinner, Gu Yihan lay on her side on the bed, playing a word-matching card game with Haohuo.
“Mom got seriously ill in the northwest, so Dad brought her back to Beijing,” Lu Huailin said.
“So what? We’re not living with them anyway,” Gu Yihan replied lightly, glancing at Lu Huailin, who was washing his feet.
“Is it Grandpa?” Haohuo suddenly asked, lifting his head.
Hearing this, Gu Yihan seemed to think of something and asked, “Huailin, are we going back to Beijing to visit relatives this year?”
“After all, Haohuo has never met his Grandpa.”
Hearing the reluctant tone in his wife’s voice, Lu Huailin looked at her with a half-smile.
Embarrassed and annoyed, Gu Yihan raised her little foot and kicked him in the face.
Lu Huailin caught her ankle and kissed it.
A low laugh escaped him. “Dad said we don’t need to go back this New Year. He’ll see Haohuo next year when I’m transferred back to Beijing.”
He had truly seen how good women were at saying one thing and meaning another.
She clearly didn’t want to go back, but instead of saying it outright, she had to test him indirectly.
People always said mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law were natural enemies.
He hadn’t believed it before marriage.
But after getting married, they’d only gone back to Beijing once, and things had already turned ugly.
He didn’t dare imagine what would happen if they lived together long-term.
The house would probably turn upside down.
His wife might even run away from home.
The next day, in the Accounting Office
While sweeping, Wang Guixiang accidentally knocked over Hu Shan’s trash bin.
A round paper ball rolled to her feet.
“What’s this?”
She bent down and picked it up.
“Wow…”
Hearing her cry, Zhang Limin looked up in confusion. “What’s wrong with you?”
Wang Guixiang hurried over and put the paper in front of her.
“Look! It’s full of Secretary Chang’s name!”
Zhang Limin lowered her head and looked. The paper was covered with Secretary Chang’s name, written over and over.
“Do you think Hu Shan and Secretary Chang are about to get together?” Wang Guixiang said excitedly. “I never expected it. She’s really not what she seems.”
“Just got divorced, and she’s already found such an outstanding replacement!”
Zhang Limin crumpled the paper and threw it back into Hu Shan’s trash bin.
Rolling her eyes, she pushed Wang Guixiang. “Stop dreaming. Those two are impossible!”
“Why?” Wang Guixiang asked curiously.
Before Zhang Limin could reply, Gu Yihan pushed the office door open.
Seeing Wang Guixiang and Zhang Limin standing together, Gu Yihan looked slightly puzzled, then smiled and greeted them.
Wang Guixiang was so excited she almost told Gu Yihan about her “discovery.”
But Zhang Limin tugged her sleeve and shot her a glare.
With no choice, Wang Guixiang went back to sweeping.
Still, she now had a little secret in her heart.
She wanted to share it with everyone she saw.
If she didn’t say it out loud, she felt itchy and restless.
Near lunchtime, Hu Shan walked into the office with a dark face.
She plopped onto a stool, her chest rising and falling—it was obvious she was furious.
Wang Guixiang and Zhang Limin exchanged glances.
Seeing Hu Shan’s reddened eyes, as if she had cried, Gu Yihan asked worriedly, “Sister Shan? What’s wrong?”
Hu Shan looked up at her, then burst into tears.
“The factory is bullying me!”
Gu Yihan was confused. She stood up and walked over. “What happened?”
“They want me to move out of the courtyard housing. They say I’m just an ordinary clerk and not qualified to occupy two rooms.”
“That’s normal. You really aren’t qualified to take two rooms,” Wang Guixiang blurted out.
Hearing this, Hu Shan jumped up. “Why? It was already allocated to me. That means it’s mine!”
“What’s the use of yelling at me? If you’ve got guts, go yell at the factory director!” Wang Guixiang snapped back.
At that moment, Zhao Ju pushed open the office door and glanced at the still-crying Hu Shan.
Sighing, she explained patiently, “Clerk Hu, the house you live in was allocated based on Cheng Bo’s years of service.”
“Now that Cheng Bo has left the textile factory and you’ve divorced him, the factory must take the house back.”
Hu Shan glared at Zhao Ju with bloodshot eyes.
“Why?! I’ve lived there for so long! They can just take it back whenever they want?”
Zhang Limin frowned and walked over, patting her shoulder.
“Xiao Shan, housing in the factory is already very tight…”
Hu Shan slapped her hand away. “Don’t pretend to be nice! It’s not happening to you, so of course you can talk easily!”
Seeing Hu Shan snap at everyone, Zhao Ju’s face turned cold.
She said sharply, “Many workers here have worked for over ten years and still haven’t been assigned housing.”
“You’ve only worked a few years.”
“Are you trying to occupy collective property?”
Hu Shan stiffened her neck. “What does that have to do with me?”
“If they didn’t get houses, shouldn’t they blame the factory?”
“It’s the factory’s incompetence for not being able to provide housing even to veteran workers who’ve contributed for over ten years!”
“You—!”
Zhao Ju was so angry her face turned green.
She glanced at Hu Shan coldly. “I’ll give you three days to move out. If you don’t, don’t blame us for using special measures.”
With that, she swung her arm and left.
Gu Yihan sighed and returned to her seat.
There was nothing they could do to help with the housing issue.
At noon, On the way back to the office from the cafeteria, Hu Shan remained silent, still upset about the house.
Her eyes wandered aimlessly.
Suddenly, she saw Secretary Chang standing not far away, chatting happily with another woman.
A flash of resentment appeared in her eyes.
Why was everything going wrong for her,
while he seemed completely fine—going on blind dates and preparing to get married?
Thinking of this, Hu Shan’s dark eyes rolled slightly.
An idea began to form.
