The next day.
Gu Yihan was riding her bicycle and was almost at the textile factory gate when she saw Cheng Bo struggling with a female colleague.
Thinking it was Hu Shan, she stopped her bicycle and called out in their direction, “Sister Shan?”
Hearing Gu Yihan’s voice, Cheng Bo immediately hid Ye Qingqing behind him.
Seeing this, a flicker of doubt crossed Gu Yihan’s eyes. She asked, “Sister Shan, what’s wrong?”
At that moment, Ye Qingqing, hidden behind Cheng Bo, looked up at Gu Yihan and scowled, clearly annoyed. “Are you blind or what?”
Hearing this, Gu Yihan furrowed her brows and fixed her gaze on the woman behind Cheng Bo, wanting to get a closer look.
Seeing that, Cheng Bo deliberately blocked Gu Yihan’s view.
Smiling, he said, “Manager Gu, this is my cousin. She hasn’t seen much of the world, so don’t take it personally.”
Gu Yihan shifted her gaze back to Cheng Bo, nodded thoughtfully, and said, “Manager Cheng, you must be busy!”
Then she pushed her bicycle and walked toward the textile factory gate.
Cheng Bo frowned, watching Gu Yihan’s back.
A flash of displeasure crossed his eyes; he worried she might run to Hu Shan and start spreading rumors.
Thinking this, he turned to glare at the culprit, Ye Qingqing.
“Didn’t I tell you? Don’t come to the textile factory looking for me!” he growled.
Ye Qingqing looked up, a face full of grievance. “If I don’t come to the factory, how else am I supposed to find you?”
“Do you expect me to come to your place?”
She carefully tugged at Cheng Bo’s sleeve and explained her purpose: “I don’t want to go back to the provincial city anymore!”
Cheng Bo swatted her hand away, scanning the surroundings. Seeing no one was paying attention, he let out a sigh of relief.
Frowning, he paced in a small circle and said coldly, “No, you can’t stay here!”
“If Hu Shan finds out about us, we’re done for!”
Being pushed aside didn’t anger Ye Qingqing.
With a grin, she stepped forward, ignoring Cheng Bo’s struggle, clinging tightly to his arm and whining, “I don’t want to!”
“I just want to be with you!”
Ye Qingqing thought she was being adorably coquettish, but to Cheng Bo, it was like a death sentence.
Suppressing his anger, he roughly grabbed her arm and led her toward a nearby alley.
He pushed her forcefully out, shouting, “If you want to die, don’t drag me with you!”
Ye Qingqing stumbled and twisted her ankle.
Pain made her break into a cold sweat. She looked up, tearful, at Cheng Bo: “How can you treat me like this?”
Irritated, Cheng Bo ran his hands through his hair and stared at Ye Qingqing.
“Don’t ever come looking for me again!” he threatened.
“We have nothing to do with each other. If you come after me again, don’t blame me for reporting you!”
Tears fell from Ye Qingqing’s eyes, her lips trembling. Ignoring the sharp pain in her ankle, she took a few steps back.
Until she reached the wall, she used it to straighten herself.
Looking Cheng Bo in the eye, choking back sobs, she said, “I had a child for you out of wedlock!”
“How can you…”
“You’re talking nonsense!”
“Our relationship was pure. There’s no way there could be a child!” Cheng Bo’s expression turned cold, cutting her off.
“If you harass me again, don’t blame me for reporting you to the Revolutionary Committee for being a pervert!”
He didn’t even glance at her, snorted coldly, and walked away.
Ye Qingqing watched his back, never expecting him to deny their past relationship.
Her chest felt heavy, as if a stone was pressing on it, and silent tears slid down, hitting the ground.
Elsewhere, Gu Yihan pushed open the office door and saw Hu Shan lounging with her legs crossed, reading a newspaper.
She walked to her desk and sat down, putting her bag in the drawer.
Looking at the relaxed Hu Shan, she pondered for a moment. She decided to give a subtle hint.
Whether Hu Shan believed it or not was up to her.
“Sister Shan, I had a huge embarrassment this morning.”
Hu Shan looked up at Gu Yihan, curious. “What kind of embarrassment?”
“At the textile factory gate, I saw Manager Cheng chatting and laughing with a female colleague. I thought it was you!”
“But when I asked, Manager Cheng said she’s his cousin. She’s really nice-looking, slim and slender.”
Hu Shan froze for a moment, then straightened up, tightening her grip on the newspaper.
She looked at Gu Yihan, smiling, and said, “Xiao Han, you saw it wrong. Cheng Bo’s cousin has a fuller figure!”
“Oh, really? Then maybe I did see it wrong!”
Gu Yihan deliberately showed a surprised expression and didn’t continue her comment.
Hu Shan sat there, dumbfounded, her eyes unfocused.
She wasn’t a fool.
Gu Yihan wasn’t the type to meddle for no reason.
If they weren’t close, she would have ignored it completely.
Since she spoke up, it meant Cheng Bo wasn’t that innocent—there was definitely something fishy.
Thinking this, bitterness welled up in her heart.
Wang Guixiang and Zhang Limin exchanged glances, puzzled.
They couldn’t understand what Gu Yihan and Hu Shan were playing at.
All day, The office atmosphere was stifling. Except for Zhang Limin, the other three didn’t speak a word the entire day.
Until the end-of-day bell rang.
Hu Shan shot out like a rocket.
Zhang Limin, surprised, gaped and looked at Gu Yihan, who was packing her lunch box into her bag. “What’s wrong with Xiao Shan?”
Gu Yihan looked up at Zhang Limin, feigning innocence. “We’re all in the same office and you didn’t notice? How would I know?”
She picked up her bag and left, leaving behind a parting remark: “Don’t forget to lock the door!”
At the compound gate, Grandma Gu paced anxiously. There was barely any cooking oil left at home, and she was craving something.
She wanted to ask Hu Shan if her little granddaughter didn’t have time to give the coupons to the supply and marketing co-op, she could give them herself.
Hu Shan, full of anger, returned to the compound. Before entering, Grandma Gu called out, “Xiao Shan!”
Hu Shan looked up at Grandma Gu, eyes red, and coldly spat, “Get lost!”
Then she ran into the house and slammed the door shut with a loud bang.
Grandma Gu was furious at Hu Shan’s attitude and muttered to herself, “Serves you right, your man schemed against you.”
Inside, Jingjing was terrified by the door slamming and cried loudly.
Cheng Weihong tried to comfort her while glancing at Hu Shan, whose face was dark. “Sister-in-law, what’s wrong?”
“Has your brother come back?”
Cheng Weihong lifted his chin, nodding toward the bedroom. “He’s been sleeping at home all afternoon.”
A trace of sarcasm flashed in Hu Shan’s eyes. Last time she miscarried, Cheng Bo didn’t take leave to accompany her to the hospital.
Today, he took leave without reason. She wouldn’t believe there was nothing going on.
Hu Shan strode into the bedroom and saw Cheng Bo lying on the bed asleep.
Turning her anger into strength, she grabbed his legs and yanked him off the bed with a single pull.
Bang!
Cheng Bo’s occiput hit the floor hard, jolting him awake.
Before he could figure out why he fell, a sharp pain shot through his head.
