The next day.
In her sleep, Gu Yihan felt a tickle on her cheek and instinctively reached up to brush it.
When she opened her eyes, she was met with a close-up of a handsome face.
Rubbing her eyes, she asked in puzzlement, “Are you off today?”
Lu Huailin chuckled softly at her words and leaned down to peck his wife on the lips.
In a hoarse voice, he said, “I took the day off just to watch Sleeping Beauty wake up!”
Gu Yihan shot him a sidelong glance and pouted. She didn’t believe him for a second!
She pushed him away, sat up gently, and instructed, “Help me get the orange dress from the wardrobe!”
Lu Huailin nodded with a smile, fetched the dress from the wardrobe, and handed it to his wife.
Seeing her rustling under the thin blanket as she changed, he couldn’t help but laugh. In a low, teasing voice, he murmured, “Wife, I’ve seen every inch of you already.”
Gu Yihan, finished changing, poked her head out and glared at him in exasperation. “You big oaf, what do you know?”
Even the closest couples don’t change completely naked in front of each other.
Lu Huailin wasn’t angry. He cheerfully stepped forward, wrapping his arms around his wife, and playfully nibbled her soft earlobe. “This big oaf knows how to take care of his wife!”
Gu Yihan tensed and tightened her neck, shoving him away and giving him another sharp glare before heading straight out of the bedroom.
Lu Huailin followed her cheerfully, tailing behind her as he thoughtfully poured water for her face and handed her a towel.
In the courtyard, Gu Yihan didn’t see Grandma Gu. While wiping her cheeks with the towel, she scanned the living room and asked, “Has Grandma gone for a walk?”
Lu Huailin paused mid-serve and casually replied, “Didn’t see her. She probably hasn’t woken up yet.”
“What? She hasn’t gotten up?”
Gu Yihan ignored breakfast and quickly tossed the towel onto the sofa.
She hurried into Grandma Gu’s bedroom and saw her lying in bed with eyes tightly shut.
Her heart skipped a beat, worried that something might be wrong or that she was ill.
She quickly went to the bedside and placed her hand on Grandma’s forehead—normal temperature, no fever.
Half her worry immediately eased.
At that moment, she noticed Grandma Gu’s eyelashes twitch slightly behind closed eyes, realizing she must be awake.
She leaned over the bed and whispered, “Grandma, are you feeling unwell anywhere?”
Grandma Gu slowly opened her eyes, glanced at her granddaughter, said nothing, rolled over, and closed her eyes again.
Gu Yihan was startled by this series of actions.
She thought Grandma Gu was truly ill.
She hurriedly stood up and looked at Lu Huailin, who was leaning leisurely against the doorframe.
Anxiously, she called, “Huailin, Grandma’s condition seems serious!
She didn’t seem to see or hear me just now! Could something be pressing on her nerves in her brain?”
Lu Huailin glanced at Grandma Gu, lying there pretending to be asleep, and his eyes flickered with mild anger.
He quickly went to his wife’s side, wrapped his arms around her slender waist, and reassured her, “Don’t overthink it. Grandma is just old; her reactions are slow.”
Gu Yihan looked up at him, unconvinced. “You don’t understand—the brain is a very mysterious thing. Even a minor injury can leave all sorts of sequelae! And on top of that, Gu Meng struck her hard with a heavy object?”
Gu Yihan was thoroughly worried. Even in the modern world, a head injury could have irreversible consequences.
Let alone in this era.
Seeing his wife so anxious, Lu Huailin gently held her hand and led her out of Grandma Gu’s bedroom.
He comforted her, “Eat first, then go to work.”
Gu Yihan shook her head vigorously. How could she think about work now? “I need to take Grandma to the military hospital for a checkup…”
“Wife, don’t worry. I’m here with Grandma!”
Lu Huailin interrupted her, teasing, “Or is it that you don’t trust me with her?”
Seeing that he was unhappy, Gu Yihan shook her head rapidly like a rattle-drum. “It’s not that I don’t trust you.”
He held her hand and gently seated her at the dining table.
“Wife, trust me—Grandma’s fine!”
He picked up the spoon from the table and put it in her hand, urging, “Hurry and eat!”
Gu Yihan opened her mouth to say something, but seeing his serious expression, she sighed and quickly finished breakfast.
After she rode off on her bicycle, Lu Huailin calmly washed the dishes and tidied the bedroom and living room.
Unconsciously, it was almost ten o’clock. He estimated that Grandma Gu must be getting hungry.
“Grandma, I know you haven’t been sleeping!” Lu Huailin said coldly at the bedroom door.
Grandma Gu stirred, just about to speak, when Lu Huailin’s voice came again: “Grandma, in ten minutes, we—the two of us—will sit down and have a proper talk!”
Grandma Gu’s eyes lit up. She thought he was going to discuss Gu Meng.
She swiftly got out of bed, dressed, all in less than two minutes.
Lu Huailin sat on the sofa reading the newspaper, and when he heard Grandma Gu open the door, a trace of mockery appeared in his eyes.
In such a hurry to plead for Gu Meng?
Had she considered how his wife would feel?
How could she not think that her actions might hurt his wife?
Standing in front of Lu Huailin after a year without seeing him, Grandma Gu felt his cold aura even stronger.
She unconsciously clutched her clothes and stammered, “Xiao Lu…”
Lu Huailin lifted his head expressionlessly, eyes cold and devoid of any warmth, giving her a piercing look.
“Grandma, does the clothing fit?”
Thinking he was concerned for her, Grandma Gu smiled.
“Yes, it fits. Xiaohan has always had good taste.”
Lu Huailin sneered, lowering his gaze. Although she was wearing the clothes his wife bought, in his heart he was concerned about Gu Meng, the one who had harmed her.
“Grandma, what do you think of my wife?” he asked casually.
Grandma Gu paused, thought for a moment, and replied, “Xiaohan is very good, filial, and kind-hearted.”
Lu Huailin’s gaze never left Grandma Gu, and a cold smile formed in his heart.
His wife’s kindness had all been given to an ungrateful wretch—being so good to her and still needing to be assessed.
He then let out a mocking laugh and asked sharply, “So, you know she is filial and kind, and yet you deliberately take advantage of her?”
Seeing Lu Huailin’s face grow cold, Grandma Gu’s heart skipped a beat.
Had she said something wrong? Had she made him unhappy?
She hurriedly waved her hand, shaking her head in denial. “Xiaohan is my granddaughter. How could I possibly manipulate her?”
Lu Huailin casually folded the newspaper and placed it on a nearby empty chair.
“After all, she’s not your biological granddaughter. How could you really put her in your heart?”
Hearing this, Grandma Gu abruptly raised her head, incredulous. “Xiao Lu, how could you think this of Grandma?”
