Gu Yihan quickly ate the breakfast Lu Huailin had reserved for her, then locked the courtyard gate.

Humming a tune, she rode toward the textile workshop.

Ten minutes later, she pushed open the door to the accounting office and greeted Wang Guixiang, Zhang Limin, and Hu Shan with a smile.

“Oh, Xiaohan, you’re in a good mood today!” Hu Shan teased, noticing the glow on Gu Yihan’s face.

Gu Yihan sat down, placed her bag in the drawer, and glanced at Hu Shan, smiling.

She said, “Sister Shan, you’re in a good mood too.”

Hearing this, Hu Shan stood up, leaned over Gu Yihan’s desk, and whispered excitedly, “I have a daughter now!”

Gu Yihan froze for a moment, then realized what she meant and whispered, “The orphan your family arranged—was she sent over?”

Hu Shan nodded with a smile. “This afternoon’s train.”

Gu Yihan noticed Hu Shan’s hesitant expression. She opened her mouth but didn’t know how to advise her.

Seeing this, Hu Shan patted her arm and said with a laugh, “Xiaohan, just say what’s on your mind. Between us, there’s no need to hide anything.”

Gu Yihan gave an awkward smile.

She asked softly, “Have you told Uncle and Aunt to investigate the child’s background properly?”

“I did. It’s all been checked out,” Hu Shan said, keeping her head down and avoiding Gu Yihan’s eyes, feeling guilty.

She hadn’t asked her family to find the child’s biological parents, but she did have them check the child’s health. When her family called to say the child was healthy, she finally relaxed.

Gu Yihan looked at Hu Shan deeply, whether or not Hu Shan had taken her words to heart.

As a friend, she had said everything that needed to be said.

The rest was up to her luck.

The day passed with Hu Shan chattering excitedly in her euphoric state.

After work, Gu Yihan watched Hu Shan rush off without even saying goodbye and shook her head.

She whispered, “I hope heaven will look kindly on you this once.”

Back at the crowded courtyard, Grandma Gu carefully placed the sleeping child on Gu Meng’s bed.

She returned to the living room, sitting on a makeshift wooden bed, tidying her clothes.

She thought that when Gu Meng came back, she would tell the couple she would no longer help care for their child.

Elsewhere, Humming a tune, Gu Meng entered the crowded courtyard and ran into a flustered Hu Shan returning home. A flash of coldness passed through her eyes.

She wasn’t naive.

That little brat was in cahoots with Gu Yihan. Several times she had seen Hu Shan giving Grandma Gu treats.

If it weren’t for Hu Shan’s help, Grandma Gu wouldn’t have been so assertive in their house.

Counting on Gu Yihan as a fallback, she thought herself untouchable!

Then she remembered something and walked over to Hu Shan, smiling. “From Cheng Bo’s house, off work?”

Hu Shan paused mid-step, frowned, and gave Gu Meng a sideways glance.

“I’ve told you so many times, Gu, I have a full name,” she said curtly.

“If you really can’t remember, you can call me Comrade Hu.”

Gu Meng ignored Hu Shan’s attitude.

She smiled. “Look at you. We’re women. Once we marry, whose surname do we keep? Don’t we all follow our husband’s family name?”

Hu Shan glared at Gu Meng with contempt.

She sneered in her heart. Can she even compare to her?

She was an only child, with a house, a job, and countless dowries!

What did Gu Meng have?

She laughed coldly. “A woman like you can’t be like me!”

“Oh? How so?”

Gu Meng widened her eyes in mock surprise, staring at Hu Shan.

Then, as if recalling something, her gaze roamed over Hu Shan shamelessly before she suddenly covered her mouth.

She laughed mockingly, “It’s really different. I can have children, you can’t—you can only raise someone else’s! A woman who can’t bear children, what kind of woman is that? Of course, she’s not like us!”

Hearing this, Hu Shan’s chest heaved with anger. She stepped quickly to Gu Meng, pointing at her nose. “What do you mean by that?”

Gu Meng wasn’t the least bit afraid. She waved aside the finger pointing at her.

She sneered, “What? You don’t know? Your husband Cheng Bo has been spreading rumors that you can’t have children! He even says you’re desperate for a child, insisting on adopting a stranger’s, but refusing to adopt his cousin’s.”

As Gu Meng spoke, she clicked her tongue and shook her head. “Cheng Bo’s family… I’m not saying this to offend you, but how can an outsider’s child compare to one with blood ties?”

Listening to Gu Meng’s taunting words, Hu Shan’s eyes suddenly reddened.

Her heart felt like a torn garment, cold and hollow.

How could Cheng Bo say such things in front of outsiders?

She simply struggled with conception, it didn’t mean she couldn’t have children.

And what was he thinking? Why insist she adopt his cousin’s child?

Hu Shan’s rebellious mindset reached its peak.

The more Cheng Bo interfered with her adopting a stranger’s child, the more determined she became to adopt this child!

Thinking this, she stopped arguing with Gu Meng, glared at her, and turned to go home.

Gu Meng watched Hu Shan’s back, a slight smile forming at the corners of her mouth.

Her hand slipped into her pocket, stroking five banknotes, thinking how easy Cheng Bo’s money was to make.

Back home, Gu Meng saw Grandma Gu packing her clothes, assuming it was to guard against her.

She mocked, “Who cares about your two old lady outfits? They stink of old age, unbearable!”

Grandma Gu looked up at Gu Meng expressionlessly. “I’m leaving.”

Gu Meng froze for a moment, then said in disbelief, “You’re leaving? Where to?”

“Where I go is none of your business,” Grandma Gu replied, picking up the bundle and walking past her.

Gu Meng suddenly grabbed her arm tightly, gritting her teeth. “You’re going to Gu Yihan’s house, aren’t you?”

Grandma Gu didn’t answer, only casting a calm glance at Gu Meng.

Gu Meng gave a cold, sinister laugh.

Then, in a fit of rage, she snatched Grandma Gu’s bundle and threw it onto the makeshift wooden bed in the living room.

Grandma Gu was furious and quickly went to retrieve it. At that moment, Gu Meng grabbed her bag and swung it hard at the back of her head.

Bang! Bang!

The aluminum lunchbox inside the bag struck Grandma Gu’s head solidly.
