Jiang Zifeng looked at his grandfather, whose hair had turned white, and felt a pang of sadness in his heart.
With a choked voice, he stammered, “Grandpa… if it weren’t for that kind-hearted sister last time…”
“…who helped us with the cornmeal, would you still have the strength now to scold me?”
Grandpa Jiang was momentarily stunned. He knew that even at such a young age, his little grandson had endured a lot with him—
Facing the cold stares and insults of strangers,
Which had made his personality somewhat extreme: cold and selfish.
Taking advantage of his grandfather’s momentary distraction, Jiang Zifeng reached out and snatched the paper from his hands.
He carefully folded it and placed it in the pocket closest to his chest.
“Grandpa… we almost starved to death.”
Grandpa Jiang’s nose went red; tears streamed down his face. He pulled his grandson into his arms, his rough hands gently stroking his head.
“Xiaofeng… it’s Grandpa’s failing that made you suffer.”
“But… I still hope Xiaofeng grows up to be a righteous and kind person.”
Jiang Zifeng looked up at his grandfather, a flash of disappointment in his eyes.
He struggled out of his embrace.
In a childish yet cold voice, he said, “Grandpa, this is because of my deal with sister.”
After saying this, he turned and pushed open the wobbly door, walking out.
Outside the Textile Factory, Gu Yihan had just arrived at the factory entrance on her bicycle when Leng Xiao, who had been waiting for some time, blocked her path.
“Sister-in-law, the teacher wants to discuss something with you in detail.”
Gu Yihan looked up at Leng Xiao’s smiling face and said, “I’ll go back to the factory and ask for leave.”
“Sister-in-law, Director Yang has specially approved it. You don’t need to request leave to go to the teacher.”
With that, he pulled a pre-signed approval slip from his pocket and handed it to her.
Gu Yihan glanced at the flowing, extravagant handwriting of Director Yang on the slip, took it, and put it in her pocket.
She pushed her bicycle and walked side by side with Leng Xiao.
Leng Xiao turned his head, looking at Gu Yihan’s fair profile, and after a moment of thought, asked, “Sister-in-law… has the little hamster come to see you?”
Gu Yihan glanced at the little hamster sleeping in its space and frowned.
Why does it sleep all the time? It’s hardly ever awake.
Seeing Gu Yihan lost in thought, Leng Xiao raised his voice, “Sister-in-law?”
Gu Yihan gave him an annoyed glare. “I’m not deaf. Do you have to yell so loudly?”
Leng Xiao scratched his nose, embarrassed, and said, “I… I’m just anxious.”
Gu Yihan snorted coldly. “It hasn’t come to see me!”
Outside the Detached Villa, Master Chu was pacing back and forth with his hands behind his back. Hearing a sound, he looked up, saw Gu Yihan, and hurried over to her.
Smiling warmly, he said, “Comrade Gu, we haven’t seen each other for a few days… you’ve gotten even more beautiful.”
Gu Yihan: “……”
Leng Xiao, hearing this, immediately went up to Master Chu and whispered, “Teacher… flattery doesn’t suit you.”
Who compliments someone’s looks the moment they meet? It makes you look like an old rogue.
Master Chu glared at Leng Xiao, irritated. “What do you know!”
He then turned to Gu Yihan, smiling, “Comrade Gu, let’s go inside and talk.”
Gu Yihan looked at the embarrassed Leng Xiao and nodded.
In the Living Room, Gu Yihan sat on the sofa, listening to Master Chu talk endlessly about the contributions the little hamster had made in their experiments.
“Comrade Gu, the little hamster can locate unrecorded high-grade medicinal herbs.”
“The effects are several times higher than existing herbs.”
“Even a single day’s delay in its appearance is a loss to Chinese medical research.”
“Therefore, Comrade Gu, we need your help.”
Gu Yihan looked up, meeting her teacher’s expectant gaze.
She picked up the cup on the tea table and took a sip, not saying a word.
If you want to get benefits from someone, you can’t seem too eager.
She placed the cup back on the wooden table and said, “Master Chu, it’s not like you haven’t been monitoring me.”
“You can’t be unaware that I’ve already seen the little hamster, right?”
Does he think I’m stupid?
Over the past week, someone had been secretly watching her every move between the textile factory and the family compound.
Master Chu, embarrassed, forced a smile and explained, “This… is for your safety and the hamster’s.”
He quickly changed the subject: “By the way, Comrade Gu, as long as you help us find the little hamster, the institute will give you a generous reward.”
He had no other option. All hopes rested on Gu Yihan.
After all, current research required the little hamster, whose senses of taste and smell were more acute than humans.
Gu Yihan glanced at her watch. It was almost lunchtime, and if she rode back to the factory, she could still catch the cafeteria’s meal time.
She stood up and smiled at Master Chu. “Master Chu, don’t worry. For the generous reward you mentioned, if there’s any news about the little hamster, I’ll be the first to inform you.”
After saying this, she greeted Master Chu and Leng Xiao and prepared to return to the textile factory.
“Leng Xiao, see Comrade Gu off,” Master Chu said, giving the couch-bound Leng Xiao a gentle push.
Leng Xiao quickly stood, smiling, and said, “Sister-in-law, I’ll take you back.”
Gu Yihan nodded.
Once outside the row house, Gu Yihan turned to Leng Xiao. “Comrade Leng, you don’t need to see me off. I’ll ride back myself.”
Leng Xiao looked at Gu Yihan pushing her bicycle and said, “Sister-in-law… thank you for helping with this matter.”
Gu Yihan smiled playfully, “Well, let’s see if your generous reward can convince me.”
Leng Xiao paused for a moment, then looked at her thoughtfully.
He smiled. “Don’t worry, sister-in-law. When we return, I’ll have the teacher send you the full list of rewards.”
Gu Yihan smiled slightly. “Let’s hope everything goes as we wish.”
With that, she turned and rode her bicycle toward the family compound.
She needed to figure out why the little hamster, after returning, slept almost all day.
There had to be a reason she didn’t know.
Riding into a narrow alley, she was startled by a child suddenly rushing out. She quickly pulled the handbrake and saw Jiang Zifeng sprawled on the ground. She frowned.
She immediately got off, approached him, and crouched down, worry in her eyes.
“Are you hurt anywhere?”
Jiang Zifeng smelled a familiar scent, suddenly looked up, and stared intently at Gu Yihan, tears in his eyes.
“Sister… I’m not hurt.”
Hearing that he wasn’t injured, Gu Yihan relaxed. Carefully, she helped him to his feet.
She pulled a big White Rabbit candy from her pocket and placed it in his hand.
To calm him, she said, “Be more careful when you walk next time.”
Little Jiang Zifeng held the candy tightly in his palm, his eyes shining as he nodded vigorously at Gu Yihan.
Gu Yihan rode her bicycle in a circle, returned to the old courtyard, and used her telekinesis to retrieve the paper Jiang Zifeng had written.
She then placed ten pounds of cornmeal in the original spot using the same method.
After finishing, she rode her bicycle back to the textile factory.
