Zhou Jun walked to the gate of the small courtyard and knocked a few times.

He called out loudly, “Su Nian, open the door, it’s me.”

Su Nian, standing at the doorway, immediately opened the door when she heard Zhou Jun’s voice.

“Zhou Jun, you’re finally back, I…”

Zhou Jun raised his hand to interrupt her, giving her a faint smile.

He said, “I’m just back to pack a few things. I’ll be leaving soon.”

Zhou’s mother suddenly darted toward Su Nian and raised her hand to slap her cheek.

Startled, Su Nian quickly shut her eyes. Before the slap could land, she carefully opened her eyes again and saw Zhou Jun with a stern face gripping her mother’s wrist and pushing her back.

Zhou’s mother stumbled from the force, but fortunately Zhou Yan’s quick reflexes helped steady her.

“Brother! How can you raise your hand against mother?” Zhou Yan’s sharp voice rang out.

A cold glint flashed in Zhou Jun’s eyes as he walked straight up to his mother and Zhou Yan.

In a cold voice, he said, “Mother, I am divorcing Su Nian soon. What right do you have to lay a hand on her?”

Without waiting for them to react, he pushed both of them outside the gate.

With a “slam,” the courtyard gate shut.

Seeing Zhou Jun’s actions, Grandma Gu couldn’t help but laugh.

Looking at Zhou’s mother’s stunned expression, her annoyance at having no son to care for her immediately dissipated.

With a teasing tone, she said, “Zhou Jun’s retired now. Let’s see what you can threaten him with!”

Then, turning to the mother of Deputy Battalion Commander Wang beside her, she deliberately raised her voice: “I have a dutiful granddaughter and grandson-in-law. That’s much better than that annoying old hag.”

She took Gu Yihan, who was holding Haohao, and said, “Let’s go home; there’s nothing to see here.”

Gu Yihan laughed at Grandma Gu’s childlike behavior, nodded, and followed her back into the courtyard.

Zhou’s mother looked at her wrist, now bruised from Zhou Jun’s grip. In that moment, she realized he had truly intended to hit her.

A chill ran through her heart—this son of hers had truly turned against her.

Zhou Family Courtyard, Zhou Jun held Su Nian’s hand as they entered the bedroom. He glanced at their daughter, who was sleeping soundly on the bed.

He turned and lifted her into his arms, kissing her cheek. “Wife, I’ll come back after taking care of things at home,” he said.

Hearing this, Su Nian looked up at Zhou Jun and gently touched his rough cheek.

Choking back tears, she said, “I thought you were really going to divorce me!”

Zhou Jun lowered his head and kissed her lips, smiling: “A wife as wonderful as you—no one would ever give you up, let alone me.”

He released his hold on Su Nian, opened the cabinet, and took out a large bag. While packing clothes, he said: “Wife, I’ve found a job for you.”

Su Nian was stunned. Zhou Ni was so young—if she went to work, who would take care of the child?

“It’s a teacher position at the military elementary school, teaching third grade.”

Zhou Jun didn’t wait for Su Nian’s reply. Seeing her sit on the bed, lost in thought, he walked over and sat beside her, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. “Don’t like being a teacher?” he asked.

Su Nian looked up at Zhou Jun, forced a small smile, and whispered, “What about the previous teacher?”

Zhou Jun furrowed his brows, noticing her lack of enthusiasm. He said: “The previous teacher is about to go on maternity leave.”

“Oh.” Su Nian lowered her head, staring at her delicate fingers.

She had never worked before and wasn’t sure if she could handle both caring for a child and working.

Zhou Jun sighed. He didn’t want her to work either, but without a job, her household registration had nowhere to be transferred. He had to find a job that could accept it.

He pinched Su Nian’s cheek and said, “If you don’t want to work later, you can have one of the military wives from the family housing take over for you.”

Hearing this, Su Nian’s eyes brightened, and she nodded with a smile.

Seeing her smile, Zhou Jun reminded her, “Wife, I’m leaving. Take care of yourself at home. If you don’t have time to cook, just buy meals from the canteen.”

Su Nian nodded and said, “Don’t worry, I won’t starve.”

Zhou Jun stood up, grabbed the packed bag, and walked out.

Afternoon, Grandma Gu was chopping behind Haohao with a knife, muttering, “Sever the tripping cord.”

Gu Yihan laughed, watching her: “Grandma, will this really work?”

Grandma Gu followed behind Haohao. After three chops, she put the knife down on the table and looked at her granddaughter. “You’re too young to understand. This comes from the ancestors.”

“What do you mean, comes from the ancestors?” Lu Huailin walked into the living room, curious as he looked at Gu Yihan on the sofa.

Gu Yihan laughed and explained: “Grandma says Haohao walks unsteadily because the tripping cord is still there.”

She pointed at the kitchen knife on the table: “Chop three times with the knife, and he’ll walk steadily from now on.”

She couldn’t help but laugh herself.

Lu Huailin sat beside her, a smile in his eyes, watching Haohao practice walking with Grandma Gu.

“These are all tricks,” he said.

Gu Yihan chuckled and saw Grandma Gu roll her eyes at her, trying hard not to laugh. “I said it’s superstition, with no scientific basis, and grandma didn’t believe me,” she added.

Leaning back on the sofa, Lu Huailin held his wife’s hand, stroking it with his palm.

Feeling the ticklish sensation, Su Nian tried to pull back her hand, but Lu Huailin held it tightly.

In a low voice, he said, “When Commander Zhou leaves, he wants you to help take care of Su Nian for a few days.”

“What?” Grandma Gu, supporting Haohao, looked up at Lu Huailin. “Commander Zhou retired, didn’t he? How can his wife still live in the family housing?”

Gu Yihan turned her head to look at Lu Huailin. “Did Commander Zhou give you a heads-up beforehand?”

Lu Huailin lowered his eyes to look at his wife’s fair hands and nodded. “Yes. Zhou Jun hasn’t taken a proper vacation for years. This time, he took a full break—one and a half months off.”

“The purpose of going back home is to transfer Su Nian and the child’s household registration to Kun City.”

Gu Yihan looked surprised. “Su Nian’s household registration was in the countryside?”

Grandma Gu pursed her lips and added: “Yes. She’s a capitalist’s daughter with plenty of family money. How could it not be an urban household registration?”

Ever since she learned Su Nian was a capitalist’s daughter, her impression had soured. No wonder the family had everything—they were just exploiters of farmers.

Lu Huailin looked at Grandma Gu patiently and explained: “The Su family donated most of their assets. To avoid scrutiny from the local authorities, after marrying Zhou Jun, Su Nian’s household registration was transferred to the Zhou family.”

Hearing this, Gu Yihan realized why Su Nian hadn’t dared to resist—her and the child’s registration was entirely under Zhou Jun’s mother’s control.

Grandma Gu, holding Haohao on the mat, sighed: “Did Commander Zhou know in advance that his mother would come to cause trouble?”

Lu Huailin smiled but remained silent.
