At the Small Courtyard Gate, Watching Jiang Yue’s retreating figure, Gu Yihan let out a long sigh.

As she walked back into the courtyard, she heard the clucking of the hens and instantly felt a pang of longing. She had been wanting to taste the chickens raised on the “space water” for a long time.

She needed to figure out a way to swap them without Grandma Gu noticing that her treasured chickens had been replaced.

Lu Huailin was sitting on the bed, smiling as he watched their son shake a red rattle vigorously, showing it off proudly.

“Are you getting a promotion?”

Hearing his wife’s question, Lu Huailin didn’t respond. Instead, he stood up, walked over to her, and scooped her up onto the bed so she could sit side by side with their son.

Then he quickly started pouring water to wash a towel, wiping her cheeks, not missing even a single finger.

Gu Yihan looked at Lu Huailin’s expressionless face with a head full of black lines, pulled her hand back, and said irritably, “You’ve rubbed it raw.”

Lu Huailin said nothing, leaning down to kiss her cheek.

He snorted coldly: “Wife, you should stay away from that woman. You can tell she has bad intentions.”

Gu Yihan knew exactly what kind of person Jiang Yue was, and pretended to be puzzled: “How do you know she has bad intentions?”

“Normal people don’t get that close when they talk.” Lu Huailin said, clearly annoyed.

Gu Yihan looked at him in surprise: “Since when do you get jealous over another woman?”

“I’m not jealous, she’s just not acting normally. You saw it with your own eyes—her mouth was practically on your face!” Lu Huailin stubbornly said, refusing to admit any jealousy.

Gu Yihan thought for a moment: “Maybe it was just your angle. Jiang Yue was whispering in my ear.”

Lu Huailin gave his wife a sideways glance: “What was she whispering?”

Gu Yihan patted his arm: “It’s all because of you. She wanted to know who you recommended to take your place.”

Lu Huailin’s expression turned cold: “She doesn’t know that military families aren’t allowed to discuss military affairs?”

Gu Yihan held Haohao’s hand and played the rattle with him. She looked up at Lu Huailin and said softly: “I don’t even know about your matters. I had to hear it from others.”

Seeing his wife’s little expression, Lu Huailin quickly explained: “Wife, it’s not finalized yet. I just didn’t want you to worry.”

Gu Yihan knew about the military’s secrecy rules and didn’t ask if he was being promoted or demoted.

She deliberately kept a cold expression: “So, is it your fault or not?”

Lu Huailin didn’t really think it was, since he never shared military matters with his wife anyway. But he couldn’t say that, so he nodded repeatedly: “Wife, it’s my fault!”

Gu Yihan smiled slightly: “Then will you accept your punishment?”

Lu Huailin saw how quickly his wife’s face had changed—it was faster than his page-flipping speed—and helplessly nodded: “Wife, I accept my punishment.”

A glint appeared in Gu Yihan’s eyes. Pulling his shirt corner, she whispered: “I want to eat the old hen.”

Lu Huailin paused for a moment: “That’s easy. I can get it.”

He had thought it was something serious and planned to go to the cookhouse tomorrow to buy a couple of chickens.

But Gu Yihan smiled and shook her head: “I want to eat our old hen at home.”

“Home’s?”

Lu Huailin instinctively glanced toward the bedroom door, afraid Grandma Gu would hear.

He exaggeratedly said: “Aren’t you afraid Grandma will come after you?”

Gu Yihan glared at him. Of course she was afraid—Grandma Gu tended to those chickens as if they were royal ancestors.

“If it were that easy to convince Grandma, would I even need you?”

Lu Huailin looked troubled. He knew exactly where he stood in Grandma Gu’s heart. No matter how high his wife’s position was, she could not compete with those old hens, let alone him.

He thought for a moment, about to refuse, but when he looked at Gu Yihan’s admiring eyes, his heart softened and he blurted: “Fine.”

Gu Yihan’s face lit up with joy.

Lu Huailin immediately regretted it—he had fallen into his wife’s little “beauty trap.”

At the Cheng Family Home, Jiang Yue returned home to find Cheng Changzheng just waking up and having breakfast.

Fuming with anger, she immediately threw what she was holding onto the table.

She yelled: “Cheng Changzheng, look at the time! You’re only just getting up!”

Quick-eyed Cheng Changzheng caught the bowl on the table in his hands, eating dumplings as he asked: “What’s wrong with you?”

Jiang Yue was furious that he remained so calm, even managing to rescue the bowl and still eat breakfast.

Her frustration bubbled over, and she burst into tears.

Cheng Dong, doing his homework in the bedroom, heard her loud crying. Sighing, he put down his pen and walked into the living room.

“Mom, why are you crying? It’s the New Year—you’re ruining all the luck with your crying.”

“Exactly. You could learn something from a teenager’s attitude.” Cheng Changzheng chimed in.

Jiang Yue saw that neither of them understood her hard work or intentions, and her heart sank further. She cried even harder.

Cheng Dong looked at Jiang Yue, sniffling and bawling, and nearly vomited the breakfast he had just eaten.

Glancing at Cheng Changzheng, who was eating happily while holding a bowl, he couldn’t help but say: “Dad, how can you eat with Mom crying like that?”

“You brat! Even if your mom looked ugly, you don’t have the right to complain. When she raised you, dealing with all your mess, she never complained.” Cheng Changzheng shouted angrily.

“You’re the ugly one!” Jiang Yue yelled back through her tears.

Suddenly, a big snot bubble popped on her face, leaving her stunned.

Seeing Cheng Changzheng and Cheng Dong staring at her, she felt utterly humiliated. Covering her face, she ran back to the bedroom crying.

Cheng Changzheng and Cheng Dong exchanged a glance and couldn’t help but laugh out loud.

After finishing the dumplings, Cheng Changzheng set down his bowl and chopsticks, stood up, and opened the bedroom door to see Jiang Yue still buried in her blanket crying.

He found a stool, sat beside her, and smiled gently: “Wife, originally I didn’t agree with you going to Captain Lu’s house.”

Jiang Yue looked up at Cheng Changzheng sharply: “How would you know unless you tried?”

“You tried. And then?” Cheng Changzheng’s voice remained flat.

“She’s stubborn and won’t answer. No matter how I ask, Gu Yihan pretends she doesn’t know.” Jiang Yue murmured.

Cheng Changzheng glanced at her lightly: “No wonder you’re not tall—your scheming held you down.”

“You’re tall! You’re tall! You’re just a brute!” Jiang Yue shouted.

Cheng Changzheng didn’t get angry. Holding her hand, he smiled: “I didn’t want you to go to Captain Lu’s, and you got mad at me. You went, and now you’re still mad at me.”

Sighing, he added: “Do you think my life is hard or not?”

Jiang Yue glared at him with red eyes: “I’m doing it for you, for this family.”

Cheng Changzheng didn’t take her words to heart.

Now that he was already a deputy regiment commander, even if he retired and returned locally, their life wouldn’t be too bad.

He patted her back reassuringly: “Don’t worry. Captain Lu is fair. If he doesn’t recommend me, it just means your husband isn’t capable.”
