Gu Yihan walked into the living room, casually placing her shoulder bag on the rack by the door.
She noticed Grandma Gu sitting alone, leaning against the sofa, looking somewhat puzzled.
She walked over and sat beside her. “Grandma, has the little one gone to sleep?”
Without lifting her head, Grandma Gu softly replied, “Xiao Lu took him out for a walk.”
After a brief pause, she added, “Haohao’s grandma is here.”
Mother Lu came?
Gu Yihan stood and went out to the yard, looking around, but there was no sound.
The yard was small; there was no way she could be hiding somewhere unseen.
She returned and sat beside Grandma Gu. “Out?”
Grandma Gu, without needing to ask, knew that her granddaughter meant Mother Lu, and shook her head. “Xiao Lu got her a room at a guesthouse.”
Seeing Grandma Gu’s expression, Gu Yihan didn’t need to ask further to guess what Mother Lu must have said.
She quickly looped her arm through Grandma Gu’s and spoke earnestly, “Grandma, don’t let whatever anyone says get to you.”
Hearing this, Grandma Gu finally lifted her head, her eyes red and swollen. “Xiao Han… maybe I should go back to the Gu family…”
“Grandma,” Gu Yihan interrupted, “do you feel disgusted with your granddaughter? Don’t want to help watch Haohao anymore?”
Grandma Gu hurriedly shook her head and explained flusteredly, “No, I’m delighted to have you two here—I hardly get to see you both!”
“Then don’t talk about going back,” Gu Yihan said seriously.
“But—”
Grasping her hands tightly, she added pitifully, “Grandma, just pity your granddaughter a little.”
Grandma Gu looked at her little granddaughter’s comical expression and laughed.
After chatting with Grandma Gu for a while, Gu Yihan’s head ached slightly, so she leaned back on the sofa to clear her mind.
“Wife.”
Lu Huailin returned home, holding their son, and saw the bicycle in the yard—he knew she was back.
Gu Yihan turned to look at him as he walked into the living room and teasingly said, “Trying to summon my soul?”
“Since Xiao Lu is back, we can eat now,” Grandma Gu said with a smile, standing and heading to the kitchen.
Lu Huailin saw his wife’s playful indifference and found it quite cute.
He carried their son over and sat beside her, smiling. “Wife, when I heard Mom had arrived, I immediately took leave to get her out of the family compound.”
Gu Yihan gave him a sidelong glance and then patted the little one in his arms. “Miss your mom?”
The little boy immediately stretched out his arms, wanting to be picked up.
Gu Yihan quickly stood, took him from Lu Huailin, and encouraged him, “Say ‘Mama.’”
“Ma~”
“Ah,” Gu Yihan happily responded, then planted a kiss on his cheek.
“Wife, give me a kiss too,” said Lu Huailin, leaning his face toward her.
Gu Yihan pushed his head lightly, laughing, “Go help Grandma in the kitchen.”
“Wife, kiss me.”
Seeing him stubbornly lean in again, she said helplessly, “Haohao is watching you!”
Lu Huailin glanced at their son’s clear, big eyes and quickly covered them with his hand.
“Can’t see now.”
Gu Yihan almost laughed out loud at his actions.
She leaned in and planted a “smack” on his cheek.
Receiving his wife’s sweet kiss, Lu Huailin was in a good mood. He stood up, humming, and left the living room.
Gu Yihan tapped the little one in her arms and laughed. “Don’t follow your dad—so childish.”
The little boy sat on her lap, excitedly shouting, “Ba~ba~”
After Grandma Gu and Lu Huailin tidied the table, Gu Yihan carried the little one to the dining table, looking at the spicy chicken, braised pork, and a stir-fried egg.
Preparing this took quite some time. Since the little one had napped little during the day, just watching him made her feel tired.
Looking at Grandma Gu, who was smiling, she said, “Grandma, from now on, wait until I get home to make dinner. Otherwise, you’ll be overworked.”
Grandma Gu waved her hand. “Not tired.”
Cooking was just a small task. Back in Gu Village, she still had to work in the fields for labor points.
Even if she was exhausted, she had to cook. Such a life was something she had never dared to imagine before.
Lu Huailin sat beside his wife, took their son from her arms, and held him while eating.
Gu Yihan liked to gnaw on chicken wings and claws; Grandma Gu had set some aside just for her.
“By the way, did you give Mom the local food coupons?”
Watching his wife gnaw on a chicken claw, Lu Huailin chuckled.
He said, “Yes. Grandma even set aside some food for me to take to Mom. Don’t worry, wife—she won’t go hungry.”
Gu Yihan glanced at the lone chicken drumstick on the table and nodded.
“Also, next week, the textile factory is sending me to the provincial capital on a business trip.”
Hearing this, Lu Huailin frowned. “Does the factory accountant need to go on trips too?”
After finishing her meal, Gu Yihan took the little one from Lu Huailin and went to sit on the sofa.
She explained, “The accountant doesn’t need to go on a business trip. The provincial capital visit is for foreign guests coming to see the factory. The management wants me to go with Secretary Jiang and get some exposure.”
“Wife, I’ll see you off at the station when the day comes,” Lu Huailin said with concern.
Gu Yihan gave a perfunctory, “Okay.”
After dinner, Gu Yihan lay on her side in bed, having finally put the little one to sleep.
Just as she sat up, she saw Lu Huailin, freshly washed, enter the bedroom.
“How are you planning to handle Mom?” she asked.
“Handle what?” Lu Huailin was momentarily stunned by the sudden question.
Gu Yihan glanced at him suspiciously, seriously doubting he was pretending not to know.
Doesn’t he know why Mother Lu came to Kun City?
Would she leave if she wasn’t given money?
Seeing that Gu Yihan didn’t say anything more, Lu Huailin smiled and sat on the bed, pulling her into his arms. “Don’t worry, Dad will arrange someone to take Mom back to Beijing.”
Even if someone was arranged immediately, travel time was needed. During that period, no one could stop Mother Lu from making a scene at the family compound.
After thinking for a moment, Gu Yihan changed the topic. “Tomorrow I’ll ask for leave from the textile factory and take Mom to the city for a walk?”
Lu Huailin chuckled softly. “No need. As soon as I knew Mom was at the family compound, I took two days off.”
Gu Yihan frowned.
Ever since Lu Huailin returned from his last mission, he had been busy, leaving early and coming back late every day.
Gu Yihan struggled out of his arms. “You have time?”
Lu Huailin smiled. “These two days won’t make a difference.”
“By the way, Dad said we shouldn’t give Mom any money.”
Gu Yihan nodded; she didn’t want to give it either. This money was given by Father Lu for the child—it couldn’t just be handed to Mother Lu.
Looking at Lu Huailin, she sighed. “Thankfully, we have Dad—the steadying anchor. Otherwise, you’d be a little poor thing.”
She couldn’t help thinking that way; Mother Lu’s intelligence was easily swayed by emotion.
Whoever spent more time with her got her favor.
