B5SB -Chapter 188 The Arrival of Mother Lu

Grandma Gu took advantage of the little one’s nap to quickly put away the chicken and pork that her granddaughter had bought yesterday.

She quietly opened the bedroom door and saw Haohao already awake, waving his little hands in the air, playing with nothing.

Smiling, she went to the bed and changed his diaper, then bent down to pick him up. Cheerfully, she said, “Haohao, you’re such a good boy. Let’s go out for some fresh air.”

At the courtyard gate, Grandma Gu sat at the gate, chatting with the neighbors on either side.

“Grandma Wang, do you still need firewood?”

A little boy in worn-out clothes stood not far off, quietly calling out.

Mrs. Wang, the mother of Deputy Battalion Commander Wang, replied, “Tiedan, we have enough firewood at home. You don’t need to bring more these days.”

Grandma Gu asked in surprise, “Has your family switched to using a firewood stove?”

Mrs. Wang looked proudly at Grandma Gu: “It’s because my daughter-in-law gets nauseous and vomits whenever she smells the coal stove. So we can only use firewood.”

She had inquired through connections and knew that this time Zhang Xia was having a boy.

Grandma Gu didn’t pay much attention to her tone; her eyes were on Tiedan, noticing his thin frame and feeling a bit sympathetic.

She waved at him.

Tiedan’s eyes lit up. Carrying a bundle of branches on his back, he walked over to Grandma Gu: “Grandma, do you need firewood? It’s cheap!”

Grandma Gu smiled, took a dime out of her pocket, and handed it to him: “Just help me put the firewood on the left side of the gate.”

Tiedan took the dime, entered the small courtyard, and with cautious eyes, placed the wood down without wandering. He then immediately walked out.

Before leaving, he bowed deeply to Grandma Gu: “Grandma, you gave me too much. I’ll bring more firewood tomorrow.”

Grandma Gu smiled and nodded, watching the little one on her lap curiously eyeing Tiedan.

Aunt Chen asked, puzzled: “Are you helping him because you feel sorry for him?”

Grandma Gu shook her head: “Not really. Xiaohan bought a chicken, and cooking it on a coal stove doesn’t taste as good as on a firewood stove.”

Mrs. Wang sighed: “Poor Tiedan, his real mother isn’t around, and his stepmother only cares about dressing up fancy.”

Grandma Gu patted the little one’s hair: “Doesn’t his father care?”

Aunt Chen couldn’t help laughing: “Aunt Gu, don’t be fooled by Tiedan’s looks. Deputy Commander Ding treats him very well. That kid loves money.”

Grandma Gu was stunned: “Loves money?”

Mrs. Wang nodded, adding: “I heard Deputy Ding even broke brooms so he wouldn’t go into the mountains to pick things to sell.”

“Mrs. Lu, this is Commander Lu’s home.”

The sudden voice startled Grandma Gu, Mrs. Wang, and Aunt Chen.

They all turned to see Mother Lu standing there in a stylish coat, looking rather surprised.

At the military family compound, wives of this age usually didn’t dress so fashionably.

Aunt Chen recognized her. When Lu Huailin was first injured on duty, she had come to Kun City to help for a couple of days. She quickly stood up and smiled: “You came to see your grandson, little sister?”

Mother Lu didn’t respond, her gaze fixed on Grandma Gu: “Are you Gu Yihan’s grandmother?”

Before coming, she hadn’t known Grandma Gu lived with her youngest son. She only found out after entering the compound and hearing the other military wives whisper.

Grandma Gu smiled and nodded, standing while holding Lu Chenhao: “In-law, you must be exhausted from the train ride. Come in and rest a bit.”

Mother Lu ignored her words and instead asked: “How long have you been living here?”

Aunt Chen and Mrs. Wang exchanged worried glances.

Grandma Gu didn’t see it as a problem and replied cheerfully: “Over a year now.”

Good, just great.

Her own parents didn’t care, yet they raised someone else’s child—what a waste of raising a son for another family.

Though Mother Lu was angry, she didn’t show it in public.

Her gaze fell on the little grandson in Grandma Gu’s arms. He resembled Lu Huailin as a child—chubby, cute, and lively.

Smiling, she said: “This must be Haohao. Let Grandma hold him.”

The little one, already eight months old, was full of curiosity. Seeing Mother Lu reach for him, he immediately turned his head away.

Mother Lu’s smile froze, her eyes flickering with displeasure at the little grandson turning his back.

Indeed, blood ties mean nothing if the child isn’t raised by you.

Grandma Gu hadn’t expected this reaction and smiled awkwardly: “In-law, let’s go home first.”

She quickly led Mother Lu into the courtyard.

Although there were a few chickens at the gate, the yard was clean and tidy with no unpleasant smells, which pleased Mother Lu.

Inside the living room, Mother Lu gave Grandma Gu a cold glare as she sat by the dining table: “How long does my son’s family plan to let you stay here?”

Grandma Gu froze, instinctively holding the little one tighter.

The little one, feeling uneasy, stretched his arms toward Mother Lu and said: “Go.”

Mother Lu’s anger flared: “Shut your mouth!”

The little one shivered from the voice, looking at her in confusion.

Grandma Gu quickly bent down, stroking his head: “Don’t be scared by her voice.”

Her expression immediately hardened, her voice cold: “In-law, you’ve gone too far.”

“Already so defiant at this age? Imagine when he grows up!” Mother Lu said coldly to the grandson.

Grandma Gu’s chest heaved with emotion, utterly shocked that Mother Lu would criticize such a small child.

As if knowing Mother Lu meant him, the little one pouted and started crying.

Just then, Lu Huailin stepped into the courtyard, hearing his son’s cries.

He quickly entered the living room, glanced at Mother Lu, then at his crying son.

Seeing him, the little one opened his arms: “Abba! Abba!”

Lu Huailin, heart aching, immediately picked up his son.

The little one wrapped one arm around his neck, pointing at Mother Lu and protesting loudly.

Grandma Gu wiped her tears and whispered to Lu Huailin: “Xiao Lu, I’ll buy a train ticket back home tomorrow.”

Mother Lu looked at Grandma Gu’s retreating stance with sarcasm: “What? You still expect my son to support you for life?”

Lu Huailin ignored her and comforted Grandma Gu: “Don’t say that next time. If you leave, what if Haohao misses you?”

He handed the little one back to Grandma Gu.

Mother Lu was furious at her youngest son’s indifference.

She shouted: “Does Lu Huailin treat his parents like this? Aren’t you afraid of divine retribution?”

Without a word, Lu Huailin grabbed Mother Lu’s arm and walked straight to the courtyard gate, opened the military jeep, and drove out.

Mother Lu was stunned by his swift actions, yelling: “Where are you taking me?”

Lu Huailin glanced at her coldly: “To the guesthouse.”

“I won’t go!” Mother Lu screamed.

If the people in Beijing’s compound found out that in Kun City, her son wouldn’t even let her stay at home, she’d be laughed at to death.

Lu Huailin said nothing. At the guesthouse, he booked a room, placed her luggage inside, and said coldly: “Mom, Dad said that if you appear in front of Gu Yihan, he will immediately file for divorce.”

Mother Lu looked at him in disbelief: “How could that be?”

Then she remembered that after being kicked out of the Beijing compound, her husband never saw her again, which made her even more afraid.

Seeing Mother Lu settle down, Lu Huailin felt relieved. He couldn’t let her meet his wife—otherwise, he’d be the one suffering in the end.

So this mess would have to be his father’s responsibility to bear.
