Gu Yihan rode home, parked her bicycle, and noticed that the courtyard was unusually quiet.
She stood in the yard.
“Grandma… Grandma…”
She called out several times, but there was no response.
Worried, Gu Yihan walked into her grandmother’s bedroom. The room was neat and tidy, but empty.
She then hurried to the kitchen. The spacious room was quiet except for the bubbling sound coming from a clay pot simmering on the stove.
Seeing something stewing on the stove, she guessed that her grandmother had gone out for a moment, so she wasn’t too anxious.
The fragrance filled the whole house and rushed straight into her nose. She looked around, picked up a cleaning cloth, and was about to lift the pot lid.
“Good girl, don’t touch it.”
Startled by her grandmother’s sudden voice, Gu Yihan jumped, and the cloth fell to the floor.
“Did you get burned?”
Her grandmother hurried over, grabbed her hand, and checked it carefully again and again.
Only after seeing there was no redness or swelling did she relax.
Gu Yihan felt warm inside. She especially liked this feeling of being cared for. Smiling, she said, “Grandma, I didn’t even open it yet.”
She bent down to pick up the cloth.
But her grandmother pulled her arm.
“Your belly is so big now. How can you squat? Leave it. I’ll pick it up later.”
Gu Yihan looked speechless and muttered, “It’s not like I’m that delicate.”
Then she asked, “Grandma, you weren’t home just now?”
Her grandmother took out a small paper packet from her pocket and waved it with a smile.
“There was no goji berries at home, so I went to borrow some from Old Lady Wen.”
“Old Lady Wen?” Gu Yihan asked in confusion. She didn’t remember anyone nearby with that surname.
Her grandmother put the goji berries on the stove, picked up the cloth, and replied, “Wang Er’ya’s mother-in-law. Battalion Commander Wen’s mother.”
That made sense to Gu Yihan. But that place wasn’t close at all—it took quite a walk.
The aroma from the pot grew stronger and stronger. Maybe because she was pregnant and easily tempted, her stomach began to rumble.
Feeling embarrassed, Gu Yihan touched her belly and asked shyly, “Grandma, what are you stewing?”
Hearing her stomach growl, her grandmother laughed.
“The rooster Xiao Lu brought back at noon. He told me to make soup for you to nourish your body.”
Just then, Lu Huailin walked into the kitchen with his bag, went straight to Gu Yihan, and said proudly, “Wife, here.”
Gu Yihan took the bag with a puzzled look. It felt quite heavy. She opened it and saw a can of strawberry preserves.
She was overjoyed.
Canned food in this era had fewer additives, and strawberry preserves were especially sweet and sour. They were always in short supply at the supply store and very hard to buy.
She looked up, smiled brightly, hugged Lu Huailin’s waist with one hand, and coquettishly said, “Thank you, hubby.”
Lu Huailin was completely charmed by her sweet tone and grinned from ear to ear. Before he could hug her back—Gu Yihan turned around and walked over to her grandmother, who was pretending not to see the couple’s affection. She linked arms with her.
“Grandma, let’s go eat the preserves.”
Her grandmother hurriedly said, “Hey, I still have to cook.”
“It won’t take long,” Gu Yihan said, pulling her toward the living room.
Lu Huailin watched their backs and felt jealous again. He sighed and resigned himself to guarding the soup pot.
In the living room, Gu Yihan opened the strawberry can, poured some into a bowl, and handed it to her grandmother.
“Grandma, try it. How does it taste?”
Her grandmother waved her hands and refused.
“I don’t like this. Xiao Lu worked so hard to buy it. Save some for him.”
Gu Yihan gently pried her hands open and placed the bowl in her palm.
“Grandma, take it. Everyone has some. I saved his portion.”
Hearing this, her grandmother stopped refusing and carefully took a spoonful, tasting it slowly.
The sweet-and-sour strawberry flavor spread in her mouth, warming her heart.
Back in Gu Village, she never ate the canned peaches her granddaughter sent. She gave them all to the children.
They still complained that she was freeloading. She secretly wiped her tears, not wanting Gu Yihan to see.
Here, she ate her fill every day and never lacked oil or meat.
Her life hadn’t been in vain.
Lu Huailin brought the finished chicken soup to the dining table and called them to eat.
The family sat together, eating steamed buns with shredded chicken, enjoying themselves.
Only Grandma felt heartbroken—what kind of family eats a big rooster weighing several jin in one meal?
In the bedroom, after satisfying her cravings, Gu Yihan was in a great mood. She hugged Lu Huailin and kissed his cheek.
Laughing, she said, “My man is the best.”
Lu Huailin wrapped an arm around her shoulders and kissed her. Soon, both of them were breathing heavily and holding each other tightly.
“Wife, when will this end? I’m going to burst from holding it in.”
Gu Yihan couldn’t help laughing. She pushed him away and unbuttoned her padded coat.
She took his hand and placed it on her bulging belly.
“Feel it.”
Suddenly, Lu Huailin widened his eyes and stared at her in disbelief.
“Wife… did he just move?”
Gu Yihan nodded with a smile.
“The movement isn’t very strong yet.”
Lu Huailin carefully pressed his ear against her belly and kept whispering, “Baby, I’m Daddy.”
Then he kissed her belly through her clothes and whispered, “If you hear Daddy, move a little.”
He held his breath and focused for a long time, but felt nothing.
The disappointment in his eyes was impossible to hide.
Seeing his expression, Gu Yihan laughed.
“The baby is still small and needs rest. In a couple of months, you’ll be able to interact more.”
Lu Huailin looked up in surprise.
“Really? The baby can interact with me?”
Gu Yihan: “…”
How was she supposed to answer that? This was her first pregnancy too. She had only seen videos of fetal movement online before.
She wasn’t sure about “interaction,” but seeing his eager eyes, she nodded slightly.
“The movements will be very frequent later.”
As for real interaction, she wasn’t sure.
Lu Huailin thought she meant he really could interact with the baby. He was so excited that night he kept tossing and turning like a pancake.
From time to time, he sat up, placed his hand on Gu Yihan’s belly, and quietly felt for movement.
