At the Textile Factory Accounting Office, Today, Gu Yihan arrived at the office earlier than usual.
Before she could even push open the office door, the sound of Su Yonghong and Sister Min arguing reached her ears.
Inside the room, Su Yonghong’s eyes were bloodshot as she glared at Sister Min.
Her voice hoarse, she shouted, “Who told you to meddle in my business?”
Sister Min felt wronged too and pointed at her bruised face, “You’re saying I meddled? If it weren’t for you, would my face have been beaten like this?”
Su Yonghong turned her face away from Sister Min. “I didn’t tell you to go to my house either.”
Sister Min’s temper flared. She slammed the table and shouted angrily, “I didn’t go to your house, and you still don’t know how that bastard beat me up!”
Su Yonghong walked past Sister Min and returned to her own seat without another word.
Sister Min looked at Su Yonghong’s timid posture, still unsatisfied, and said, “Look at you, can’t even stand tall. Your family had money to get Zhang Xia a job, but just because she’s a girl and you were afraid of losing money, you made her go to the countryside. And now you’re pretending to care about her? What were you doing all this time?”
Thinking about the way Zhang Xia had been treated in Su Yonghong’s house, Sister Min’s heart twisted painfully.
The obedient child she had watched grow up had been ruined by her parents’ ignorance.
Angrier by the minute, she stood up, walked over to Su Yonghong, and kicked her desk hard.
Glaring at Su Yonghong, she spat venomously, “And you even had Gu Yihan look for a match for your daughter! Are you kidding? With the kind of man your family has, anyone who marries her is bound to have eight generations of bad luck!”
Su Yonghong quickly stood up and growled, “Stop talking! Xiao Han will be here soon.”
Sister Min looked at her, exasperated, “Now you’re scared? You only talk about your daughter and have someone find her a suitable match? Why not admit that your man is a scoundrel?”
Su Yonghong stared daggers at Sister Min, clenching her lips, unable to speak a word.
Seeing her expression, Sister Min snorted coldly and returned to her seat, saying nothing more.
Gu Yihan had been quietly listening outside. After a while, the room fell silent.
She waited a bit longer before pushing the door open.
Pretending nothing had happened, she returned to her desk, took out the ledger, and began working.
Before long, her peripheral vision involuntarily drifted toward Sister Min’s face, which was covered in bruises on the left side.
Su Yonghong’s face, however, showed no signs of having been hit.
Seeing Su Yonghong’s clean face, Gu Yihan wondered if she had misheard the argument outside.
As for Sister Min’s accusations that Su Yonghong had hidden the truth about her lover’s character, Gu Yihan now understood the situation clearly. She didn’t need to worry so much and could just act as if no one had ever tried to introduce a match.
In the days that followed, whenever she had time, Gu Yihan cooked for herself and secretly added spatial water to Grandmother Gu’s meals.
As a result, within a few days, Grandmother Gu’s complexion improved, her voice grew stronger, and her face even started to fill out a bit.
With Grandmother Gu by her side, the days without Lu Huailin didn’t feel so slow.
On a day off, Grandmother Gu put on the new clothes she had recently made and walked out into the courtyard. Over these days, she had become acquainted with many of the older ladies in the residential compound.
The mother of Captain Wen had become friendly with Grandmother Gu, and the two elderly women seemed to have endless things to talk about.
“Sister Gu, you look so lively in that outfit,” Captain Wen’s mother said with a smile.
Grandmother Gu was pleased, “My granddaughter bought me this fabric—ten yards in all!”
Sister Li and Li Xia had just returned from the fields and happened to pass by. Upon hearing Grandmother Gu, they snorted coldly.
Grandmother Gu and Captain Wen’s mother exchanged a glance, puzzled. “Is that a toothache?”
Captain Wen’s mother’s eyes twinkled as she shook her head with a smile, “I don’t know, maybe she’s unwell.”
Li Xia held Sister Li’s hand tightly, afraid her sister-in-law would start arguing. She quickly said, “Sister-in-law, my brother said he wants dumplings today.”
“Ah! Why didn’t you say so earlier?” Sister Li exclaimed, running back hurriedly.
When Li Xia first arrived at the compound, her brother had instructed her to watch Sister Li carefully and prevent her from saying anything reckless.
At the Li family home, At the dining table, Sister Li muttered, “Old Li, look at Lu Huailin’s wife—she even brought her grandmother here? Since when does a granddaughter take care of her grandmother? She’s treating Lu Huailin like an in-law already. Doesn’t that mean their men are all dead at home?”
Sister Li babbled on, unaware that Commissioner Li’s expression was growing increasingly dark.
Li Xia kept her head down, carefully eating her dumplings. She was growing more and more afraid of her brother.
“Smack!”
Commissioner Li slammed his hand on the table in anger, his gaze icy as he glared at Sister Li.
“Are they eating or drinking your food? Do you need to worry about it?”
Sister Li was startled by his demeanor. She timidly said, “I’m just thinking of Lu Huailin…”
Before she could finish, Commissioner Li interrupted with a roar.
“Enough! Do you really think no one can see through you? And you say it’s for someone else?”
Commissioner Li stormed off, slamming the door.
Sister Li sat at the table, her eyes filling with tears.
In the courtyard, Lu Huailin, dusty and dirty, carried his luggage and opened the courtyard gate.
He saw an elderly lady cleaning outside.
Thinking he might have the wrong place, he stepped back and looked at the house number above the wooden gate—correct.
Grandmother Gu, puzzled by his behavior, kindly asked, “Young man, which house are you going to?”
Instinctively, Lu Huailin replied, “I’m going to Gu Yihan’s house.”
Grandmother Gu froze, broom in hand, and hurriedly said, “You’re looking for Xiao Han? She went to a friend’s house. Or… why don’t you come in and wait? She should be back soon.”
Lu Huailin smiled and nodded, “Alright.”
He then walked past Grandmother Gu into the living room, set down his luggage, went to the bedroom to change into clean clothes, and efficiently boiled water in the kitchen to take a shower.
He didn’t concern himself with why there was suddenly someone else in the house. He figured Gu Yihan would explain when she returned.
Right now, however, he was filthy and needed to clean up before his wife came home.
Watching Lu Huailin’s smooth actions, Grandmother Gu’s mouth dropped open—she realized this must be her grandson-in-law.
When Gu Yihan returned home, she saw Grandmother Gu standing awkwardly in the courtyard.
She asked curiously, “Grandma, what’s wrong?”
Grandmother Gu, seeing Gu Yihan, hurried over like a lifeline and whispered, “Grandson-in-law is back. He’s in the shower.”
Gu Yihan brightened, “He’s back? That’s wonderful!”
Grandmother Gu carefully held onto Gu Yihan’s sleeve. “Do you think he’ll mind me staying here?”
Gu Yihan laughed as she held her grandmother’s hand, reassuring her, “Don’t worry, Grandma. He’ll be happy.”
Grandmother Gu studied Gu Yihan’s expression closely. Seeing no hint of reluctance, she finally felt at ease.
It seemed the household was run by the granddaughter. If it were up to the grandson-in-law, she wouldn’t dare trouble Gu Yihan at all.
