Gu Yihan was bending over, reading the newspaper, when a shadow appeared over her desk.
She looked up in puzzlement and saw Su Yonghong rubbing her hands, standing awkwardly in front of her.
Gu Yihan asked, unsure, “Sister Su, what’s going on?”
Hearing the question, Su Yonghong thought of her daughter at home, and tears began streaming down uncontrollably.
Choking back her sobs, she quietly asked, “Xiaohan, I just want to ask you…”
“Are there any soldiers in your unit who are divorced or widowed and have children to take care of?”
Gu Yihan was first startled by Su Yonghong’s strange question, and then utterly confused by the sudden tears.
She immediately stood up, walked quickly around the desk, and helped Su Yonghong sit down.
Gu Yihan softly comforted her, “Sister Su, what’s happened?”
Sister Min also quickly came over, patting Su Yonghong on the back.
“Did something happen at home? You’ve been crying all these days and won’t tell anyone,” she added.
Su Yonghong, having bottled up her feelings for so long with nowhere to release them, could no longer hold back. She covered her face and wept bitterly.
Gu Yihan and Sister Min exchanged a glance, both perplexed.
What on earth was going on?
Su Yonghong’s voice grew hoarse from crying, her eyes red and swollen. After letting it all out, the emotional pressure that had built up over days began to release.
Clinging to Gu Yihan’s arm like a lifeline, she hoarsely said, “Xiaohan… I beg you, please help me find someone with these conditions.”
Gu Yihan didn’t know how to respond.
It wasn’t that she didn’t want to help; she simply didn’t know any soldiers like that.
Seeing Gu Yihan hesitate, Su Yonghong immediately stood up and tried to kneel before her.
This startled both Gu Yihan and Sister Min, and they quickly stepped forward to pull Su Yonghong up.
Gripping their wrists tightly, Su Yonghong cried out in despair, “Xiaohan… if there were any other way, I wouldn’t be begging you. My daughter… she was sent down to the countryside as a sent-down youth and was abused there.”
Gu Yihan’s eyes widened in disbelief.
Sister Min, who had often seen Su Yonghong’s daughter, hadn’t yet processed what she was hearing: “Your daughter just went down to the countryside a few…?”
Then she shouted angrily, “Sister Su, did you report this to the police? Did they catch anyone?”
Su Yonghong wailed, “It’s useless. The countryside is so remote, the villagers stick together—I have no idea who did it.”
With no other hope, Su Yonghong now wanted only to find her daughter a way to survive.
The neighbors all knew her daughter’s situation, so finding a suitable person was impossible.
Even divorced or widowed families who inquired wanted their daughters-in-law to live with their mothers-in-law after marriage, which Su Yonghong couldn’t accept.
All her hopes were now pinned on Gu Yihan.
“The neighbors all know. My daughter hides at home all day and doesn’t dare go outside.”
Gu Yihan felt a pang in her heart. This was also why she had worked so hard to escape the countryside.
Life for women in this era was simply too hard.
Su Yonghong said, “Xiaohan, I know my daughter isn’t worthy of those unmarried soldiers. As long as the man doesn’t hit her, can provide her with a meal, and something to do—even if he’s a bit older, it doesn’t matter.”
Sister Min glared at Su Yonghong in anger. “I told you before, your Zhang Xia is too obedient and honest, and yet you…”
Su Yonghong ignored Sister Min’s tone, her eyes filled with hope as she looked at Gu Yihan.
Gu Yihan sympathized with Su Yonghong’s daughter but didn’t dare make any promises.
“Sister Su, I don’t know anyone with those conditions. I can ask my husband when he comes back. Whether it works out or not, please don’t lose hope.”
Su Yonghong looked at Gu Yihan with gratitude, shaking her head while crying, “I won’t, I won’t lose hope.”
Because of Su Yonghong’s daughter, the office atmosphere was extremely heavy and didn’t improve until the end of work.
Gu Yihan walked to the bicycle parking area with a heavy heart.
She didn’t notice Qiao Shuhui, who collided heavily with her shoulder. Staggering, Gu Yihan almost fell.
After steadying herself, she instinctively held her stomach, breaking into a cold sweat.
Seeing Gu Yihan’s reaction, Qiao Shuhui sneered, “What’s wrong? I didn’t hit you on purpose. Why are you being so dramatic?”
Gu Yihan’s eyes turned sharp as knives. She chuckled lightly, slowly approaching Qiao Shuhui, and swung her arm hard, slapping her across the face.
Qiao Shuhui was stunned by the sudden slap, screaming, “Ah… you wretch! How dare you hit me?”
Gu Yihan sneered, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to hit you.”
Taking advantage of Qiao Shuhui’s shocked gaze and screams, she slapped her several more times.
A cold glint flashed in Gu Yihan’s eyes as she watched Qiao Shuhui’s face turn red and swollen.
Her voice intentionally soft and innocent: “See, this is too hard for me. I just can’t help but want to slap you.”
Qiao Shuhui instinctively stepped back, covering her beaten face, still wondering why she was being hit.
Normally, a few harmless words would be ignored by Gu Yihan.
Suddenly remembering the child in her womb, Qiao Shuhui gritted her teeth viciously: “You’d even hit a pregnant woman! You evil woman! I’m going to report you to the Women’s Federation!”
Gu Yihan glanced at Qiao Shuhui’s belly, murmuring softly, “Pregnant?”
Suddenly realizing, she quickly grabbed Qiao Shuhui by the collar and delivered several more slaps directly to her face.
“Ah… ah… help!”
Qiao Shuhui flailed her arms, trying to disrupt Gu Yihan’s aim while screaming.
But Gu Yihan had space on her side; no matter how Qiao Shuhui moved, the slaps landed precisely on her face.
Gu Yihan’s voice was icy, “I was wrong. I shouldn’t have held back because you’re pregnant. I let you get away with it, and you dared to be insolent in front of me.”
Secretary Jiang happened to pass by the bicycle area and heard the screams.
He hurried over, seeing Gu Yihan’s ferocity, and his mouth dropped open.
Gu Yihan stopped, shook her arms—tired from slapping—and let go of Qiao Shuhui.
She snorted coldly, “Next time you swing your arms at me, don’t expect me to be polite.”
Qiao Shuhui, holding her battered face, ran quickly to Secretary Jiang.
Using what she thought was her sweetest voice, she said, “Secretary Jiang, did you see that? Gu Yihan beat up a pregnant woman! I’m going to report her!”
“Can you be my witness?”
Hearing her shrill voice and seeing her pitifully beaten face, Secretary Jiang got goosebumps all over.
He awkwardly smiled at Gu Yihan and said, “Comrade Gu, I didn’t see anything. You two talk it out.”
Then he quickly turned and ran, muttering to himself, “What a joke… this ugly woman is trying to trap me.”
Gu Yihan glanced at Qiao Shuhui, snorted coldly, and rode off on her bicycle.
“Ah…”
Qiao Shuhui stomped her feet in fury, screaming at Gu Yihan’s departing back.
