Lan Cao had just crawled to the riverbank, soaking wet, and hadn’t even had a chance to stand up.

“Smack!”

Gu Yihan quickly stepped forward and slapped her across the face.

Lan Cao had already been terrified out of her wits by Maomao’s sudden disappearance in the water.

Now, getting slapped by Gu Yihan, she collapsed miserably onto the riverbank.

Trembling lips, she struggled to speak: “W-why do you have the right to hit me?”

Gu Yihan’s gaze was fierce as she looked at Lan Cao, ignoring the question entirely, and swung her hand again, delivering another slap.

If it weren’t for her space, Maomao would have been killed by this vicious woman.

Gu Yihan’s cold voice rang out: “I want to ask you—what exactly did I do to offend you? That made you scheming so deliberately to harm me?”

If she hadn’t been constantly on guard watching Lan Cao’s actions, she herself would have been the one falling into the water.

Thinking this, Gu Yihan, still burning with anger, stepped forward, grabbed Lan Cao by the collar, and slapped her several more times across the face.

Lan Cao was stunned for a moment. Once she recovered, she tried to pry Gu Yihan’s hand away with one of hers.

She yelled, “Ah… you little bitch! How dare you hit me?!”

Her other hand reached for Gu Yihan’s hair.

The surrounding army wives quickly rushed forward to separate them, with one of them grabbing Lan Cao’s hand.

“You repay kindness with ingratitude, and now you’re complaining about being hit?” the army wife scolded.

All the army wives by the river had witnessed the whole thing—Maomao had gone to save her, and yet Lan Cao had shoved Maomao’s head under the water.

Who knows what she was thinking—most people try to hide their misdeeds, afraid of being caught.

But Lan Cao’s thinking was bizarre—she committed her crime openly in front of so many witnesses.

Aunt Chen was also furious. If it weren’t for her, Maomao wouldn’t have even come to the riverbank. She raised her voice: “Shameless. You even dared to harm Maomao, and yet you have the face to ask why Xiaohan hit you?”

After being pulled apart by the army wives, Lan Cao, still thinking about Maomao’s sudden disappearance in the water, couldn’t care about anything else.

She ran up to each army wife, pointing at the river, and kept saying: “There’s a ghost in the water! Maomao disappeared on his own!”

The army wives saw her frantic behavior and whispered to each other: “Does Lan Cao have a screw loose? A ghost? Why doesn’t she just say he’s possessed?”

Gu Yihan listened to the murmurs around her and finally exhaled in relief.

After all, she had already quietly let Maomao out. Soon, he would come ashore in plain sight.

No matter what Lan Cao said about the situation, the army wives didn’t believe her—they only trusted what they had seen.

Gu Yihan saw Maomao climb out of the river and shake off the water from his fur.

Her icy voice rang out: “You’re saying Maomao disappeared on his own?”

To convince the others, Lan Cao held up three fingers and swore: “He really disappeared! If I lie, may I never recover in this life!”

Before Gu Yihan could show them Maomao by the riverbank…

“Lan Cao!”

The shout of Deputy Battalion Commander Wang reached the group.

Hearing his voice, Lan Cao yelled loudly: “Sir, I’m here!”

The deputy commander relaxed when he heard her voice.

Walking over, he asked anxiously, “You know how to swim, right? How did you end up in the river and couldn’t get up?”

Aunt Chen sneered at Lan Cao. “Not that she can’t swim—she was trying to push Xiaohan into the water.”

The deputy commander paused, turned toward Aunt Chen, and frowned.

“Some things shouldn’t be spoken lightly,” he said coldly.

Aunt Chen glanced at him. “I saw her deliberately fall to try and push Xiaohan. How could I be wrong? If not for…”

Lan Cao interrupted Aunt Chen’s sentence, screaming: “Aunt Chen, I’m the one who fell in the water, not her!”

Maomao had finally shaken off most of the water, realizing no one had noticed him.

He ran to Gu Yihan’s side and barked furiously at Lan Cao: “Woof!”

Lan Cao, seeing Maomao, was already shaken by his sudden disappearance.

She thought his spirit had come to seek revenge.

Screaming, she ran directly behind Deputy Commander Wang to hide.

She closed her eyes, shivering all over, and kept yelling: “Ghost! Don’t come after me! I didn’t mean to hurt you!”

The army wives looked at Maomao in surprise—and then all burst into laughter.

The deputy commander was also stunned. He knew Maomao, famous at the military dog base.

“Wife, Maomao doesn’t bite people for no reason,” he explained to Lan Cao, still confused.

Aunt Chen, seeing that Maomao was unharmed, felt slightly relieved—otherwise, she wouldn’t know how to face Xiaohan.

She sneered coldly: “Deputy Commander Wang, haven’t you realized your wife feels guilty? Otherwise, Maomao wouldn’t have come back to punish Lan Cao.”

Suddenly, Lan Cao felt ice cold all over, her lower abdomen ached.

Thinking she really had been cursed, she screamed: “Ah!” and ran off crazily, ignoring everyone else.

The group was left staring at each other, then all burst out laughing.
